Percy Jackson: I Go Down with the Ship – Review

All the things happen here.

Percy calls Annabeth ‘Wise Girl!’

Luke realizes that Kronos hasn’t told him everything and is more than just annoying but is a very literal headache.

We’ve got Blackjack. I love him.

Percy talks to Blackjack and their little conversation is adorable.

Clarisse steals a new spear and hides in the breakroom.

I love that there’s just a breakroom where all the bad demigods go to hang out and play Myth-o-magic together.

We do not get Chiron and his party ponies – which is disappointing. However, in place of that we get a very strange and ridiculous phone call to Sally Jackson to ask her for a ride back to camp.

Which is funny, because she thought they were already at camp.

I mean, imagine being a mom and getting a call from your adopted child asking you to return them to the place you thought they were already at and should have been for a week or more by now. Like excuse you? I’d be having some words with the staff of the camp.

How could you not tell me, my son went AWOL?

Don’t you think I have a right to know that?

Or are you going to give me some BS about Poseidon gave him permission or we called the father instead of the mother. I mean, considering Percy lives with his mom and has never really met dear old dad, I don’t think he gets a say. But that’s just me.

Regardless, Sally Jackson gets a car. We don’t know from where.

I don’t think we’re supposed to ask.

Percy is definitely not supposed to ask.

He tries a lot of questions and is shouted at to get into the car. A lot.

Percy gives Clarisse Blackjack to get back to camp with the fleece. Finally understanding the prophecy that Clarisses needs her friends to succeed. Not that she doesn’t have any or that they will betray her or something.

Their misunderstanding of that was driving me nuts.

I know it was supposed to be there and all. But still.

Those were not my first thoughts when I read the prophecy the first time. To me, it meant you’d need help because everyone needs help from time to time. Jeez.

Anyway!

Percy is stabbed and uses the fleece to heal himself which feels like the ultimate cheat code.

Luke tries and fails to convince Annabeth that she should join them. That somehow the rule of the Titans will somehow be better than the Olympians. Because sure.

I mean, all they do is ignore you.

Kronos is giving you head splitting headaches for merely asking a question.

But sure, tell me more about how great the world will be.

Luke, I think you need to have your head examined. Or a hug. Maybe both. I don’t know.

What I do know is that your father regrets what has brought the two of you here and tried to help by giving help to Percy. Though, arguably the wrong person since Percy believes that Luke is beyond saving.

Clarisse and Percy make a plan.

They argue over the plan.

They screw with each other.

And ultimately, they swap plans.

My goodness, that was hard to follow all the way through. But I do love that Clarisse loosened up and decided to go after Annabeth instead. She opted for her friends. Hoping against hope that this was the right choice. And it was.

To fly home alone.

Because she allowed herself the gift of friends.

Despite being a little on the nose there, it is a lovely sentiment and the start of weird relationship between Percy and Clarisse. They don’t like each other exactly, but they don’t hate each other. There is some level of respect and mutual understanding between them.

It is odd and weird, and I loved every minute in the book and I’m so looking forward to it in the show as well.

I loved that Annabeth tried to convince Luke to come back to himself which is very on brand for her. She desperately wants to save Luke and will continue to try right up to the bitter end of it all. She never really gives up on him, while Percy has already given up on him.

But they do not have the shared history Annabeth and Luke do, which makes it make perfect sense.

I also love that Luke is trying so hard to convince Annabeth to join him, so the blonde chick doesn’t kill her.

But honestly, Luke? If you really want to win – you should listen to her.

Annabeth won’t join you. She and Percy need to be dealt with, otherwise, they’re going to keep freaking coming to stop you!

Sorry Luke. Sorry Annabeth. I know you’d each like to be on the same side, but right now, that’s just not a possibility. Mostly, because Luke is somehow convinced that Kronos is the answer to all things.

Except for the part where he was willing to let Thalia stay dead because he didn’t tell you that the fleece could revive her.

But yeah sure. Sounds way better.

Also, you were convinced that Thalia would be on your side rather than the Olympians’, so you both should be extra excited to return her to the living world. Except Kronos is not. I think that might be a sign, Luke.

That and your ‘horse’ hated your guts.

He sided against you. I guess you weren’t a very good pet owner. That’s not surprising given… *waves to everything.*

Clarisse kicking butt was awesome.

Percy and Luke’s fight was also awesome. We can totally see how good Luke really is in this moment as he’s far more prepared to take on Percy than he was the first time in the woods.

On the flip side, we see how determined Percy is to kill Luke this time.

He truly believes that Luke is completely lost to them and thinks the world will be better off without him. However, he is rather outmatched even though he’s clearly holding his own. It’s not really enough to take Luke down. Enough to barely escape, yes.

I also love Percy half listening to the prophecy and then just ‘noping’ the hell out.

Like ‘no, Kronos, I will not play your game.’

Percy is pretty steadfast in the gods not being the greatest, but he knows that the Titans will not be any better. Very much of the devil you know sort of mind. I can respect that.

I also know that Percy does his best to make do with the world they have. Improving on the improved.

The Olympians are a step up from the Titans. They at least don’t want to wipe out humanity and keep everyone enslaved. Maybe we can just improve them from here instead of just destroying everything.

Maybe total annihilation isn’t the answer. Just a thought, Luke.

Food for thought and all that.

Overall, I liked this episode and how everything came together. Percy and Clarisse working together. Grover and Tyson trying to get a ride only to realize no one can drive and we’re certainly not letting Percy drive. Not again. Not after last season.

Only to decide to call an adult.

Which is honestly the choice I’d like more shows like this to choose. We’re in over our heads – MOM!

Sometimes, you just need an adult to help you out.

Percy not understanding where the car came from.

The humor and the pieces all coming together as the season comes to a close. I’m really wondering how the next episode is going to unfold since there’s still a few pieces we still need to get through.

Can’t wait!
