The Legend of Vox Machina: The Frigid Doom – Review

The party reunites to Hell literally breaking loose.

As a giant demonic creature hunts half of Vox Machina all the way out of Hell back to the frozen landscape of Draconia.

Which somehow ends up helping Vox Machina by a lot since it takes the brunt of the damage from Vorugal instead of them. Allowing the group to actually catch their breath for a moment or two before the fight starts up again.

Thankfully, it doesn’t end in Vox Machina or ally deaths, just the demon, and Vorugal.

RIP Liam’s voice acting for the dragon. I was enjoying that.

I must also say that I did not expect him to die so swiftly since it took most of last season to defeat acid breath. Before that we were unknowingly fighting a dragon the entire season. I did not expect it to take like five episodes to get rid of this guy. Not to mention, it hasn’t even been that long in show.

This is the third episode for the course of like 12 hours.

Oh, and once again, I must express how terrifying Keyleth is to manage to help open the portal from the side you cannot open it from. She a badass.

I need someone else to see this as much as I do. Especially on Vox Machina who appear to take her for granted from time to time. As again, I will also point out that I think she’s right about the other dragon. The one who is sick and claims to want to help them. I don’t trust her and I agree with Keyleth that they shouldn’t trust her either.

However, no one appears to be listening.

But the good news for this episode is that Kima is not dead. Nor is anyone else in Vox Machina. But one of the big bad dragons of the Chroma Conclave is.

Again, I must also note that I love the name – Chroma Conclave. Matt is a brilliant storyteller. I’d love to pick his brain for tips and tricks for like a week. Just dude, give me all the tips, I want to know everything.

Anyway, Kima lives and this is truly the first time I’ve ever seen Allura completely unhinged.

Also, I love how this appears to be both a warning and somewhat of a smack on the head from fate for Vex and Percy.

It’s a very interesting moment. Because this level of fear and not protecting themselves because they’re more worried about the other is exactly what they’re afraid might happen if they get seriously involved with each other. Though I think this is more of Vex fear than a Percy fear. I think he would lay the world at her feet if he could.

However, like Vax, Vex has issues with intimacy and getting close to people for fear of losing them. Or even losing herself.

Because you can clearly see that Kima and Allura have lost themselves in each other. However, while Percy and Vex see the bad parts of what that means. They must remain level-headed to help protect Allura while she searches with a level of reckless abandon, I did not expect from her to find Kima. While they see that, they also see two people who are willing to walk through fire and ice for each other.

And isn’t that the most incredible thing in the world to find?

Someone who would risk everything to find you? To protect you? To love you?

While yes, you can make a case for being more vulnerable, you can also make a case that you’re never safer than having someone who will watch your back like that. One who doesn’t let snow, ice, or fear of a giant pissed dragon stop them from finding you. And when you find them, you want them to stay back because the dragon is hunting you and you don’t want her to get hurt on your behalf.

I love the conclusion they reach that they each do what they do because they love each other. They’ve always been fearful of losing each other. Even before they knew what they were to each other.

And I think that’s the smack on the head of it for Percy while Vex continues to live in denial.

Percy realizes there isn’t a thing in the world he wouldn’t do for Vex. Even if it means stuffing his feelings down to get what he can from her emotionally. He put the world at her feet as a I said before. He’d move heaven and earth to be there for her. No matter what he has to face to do it.

And while Vex feels the same, that feeling scares the crap out of her, and she’s not ready to face it yet.

They’re looking at their future in Kima and Allura. Yet they’re not ready to be there right now.

Maybe one day. For now, they’re trying casual and light. Which won’t work because just like in the flashback, they’re already in too deep like Kima and Allura to back out now. They’re doomed to be together whether they like it or not.

While there was definitely a time when I would have prefered Keyleth and Vex together, even though I knew what was going to happen regardless. Laura and Marisha’s chemistry is amazing after all.

However! I must admit that Percy and Vex is growing on me in a way I did not expect at all.

I knew they ended up together and I love Laura and Taliesin together as well. Laura is just walking chemistry. If you don’t have chemistry with her, you must not be alive or something. That’s the only explanation I’ve got for you.

What I did not expect was to love these two as much as I do.

Percy has come so far from wanting nothing but revenge to the point where he just lights up the moment he sees Vex. There are so many stars in his eyes when he looks at her. His voice so soft and loving. He’d give anything to watch her smile. Talk. To just be with her. He’s so in love that it’s just ridiculously adorable to watch her become the focus of his being as he grows into himself and who he ought to be without a thirst for vengeance driving him.

Meanwhile, the closely guarded Vex opens up to him in a way she does with no one else. Not even her brother because Percy sees a part of her that she doesn’t let anyone else see. Even Vax. The soft little girl she tucked away because she had to. To be strong, for her and her brother. To survive. Much like Percy. They see themselves in each other. Vex doesn’t have to be anything in Percy’s eyes. She can simply just be and that is more than enough. She’s not striving for anything. Just enjoying herself. Something I surmise she hasn’t had a lot of in her life.

I really love this couple, and I look forward to seeing their journey to realizing they’re going to be together forever.

Anyone else?

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. I loved Grog and Scanlan betting on the outcome of the two giants going toe to toe. I would have too. I’m glad they’re both dead.

I’m glad Kima is not and she was reunited with Allura. I loved watching each of them go absolutely crazy. Then everyone tackling the dragon together.

I love that his death pissed off Thordak.

Not happy to see what’s her face is still up and around. How is she not dead yet? How did Thordak not just turn her into ash right then and there? What did Matt role to keep her alive in that encounter, two natural 20s?

I know it’s not possible, you know what I mean!

Jeez. She needs to go. I am once again regretting everyone who stopped Percy from shooting her in the first season. Could have saved ourselves so much trouble. Also, it is really annoying that she’s teaming up with the dragons that hate people, but they have not just killed her on sight for being a human. Like why? Why does she get a pass? To annoy Vox Machina?

BOO!

Can you tell I don’t like Ripley?

Well, now, we’re headed to Scanlan’s… house? I think. I don’t know. Also, I’m a little terrified to see it. I feel like it’s going to look like sex room or something. You know what? I don’t want to think about it until next week! See you then!
