Maya & Carina 7×10 – Review

Well, that was an episode.

Somehow last week’s was better.

Huh.

Alright, let’s dive right into the scary thoughts running around my brain. Shall we?

I might make a separate thing with my thoughts for the episode as a whole, but for Maya and Carina, let’s focus on them right now.

I didn’t like that Maya only ended up as captain of 19.

I know we’ve all wanted Maya to get her captain’s bars back, which she deserves without question at this point. But ultimately, her goal was to keep moving up and climbing the ranks.

Not Andy.

Andy only ever wanted 19 so like it makes no freaking sense whatsoever that she became Chief of SFD. At all.

It should have been Maya.

I would swap the two of them in the finale for jobs. Because it makes no character sense that Maya wouldn’t still be chasing everything she wants.

Which included her ranks. Not just being captain. Captain was just an important step. That’s all. I don’t like that.

Not even a little.

I do like that Maya continued to be a firefighter despite being terrified to lose her life and leave her wife alone to raise their children. I know there was a lot of speculation of Maya changing careers and it would have made sense given the cliffhanger.

Which they did use effectively at all.

Nope.

Instead, they used it as a device to set up the lame flashforwards that didn’t quite work. Like is that how it ends up?

Or is it just what they wish?

It didn’t really make it clear.

Although, as for Maya and Carina. Apparently, despite Maya not wanting three kids, they ended up on the same page of three anyway.

Because Maya’s vision shows Carina having a baby and herself giving birth too.

Which I also didn’t mind. I know some people didn’t like this because it doesn’t fit with their thoughts about Maya. But honestly, I think it does.

In season five, Maya and Carina are discussing the thought of kids in their bedroom. Maya says that she wouldn’t see the inside of a fire truck for months if she were to get pregnant. Which is when Carina offered up herself instead since there’s two women in the relationship.

So for me, it doesn’t really seem totally out of place.

Maya has thought it over before.

I can see how her opinion might change just like everything else in her life has changed.

She once believed that she didn’t need a girlfriend or couldn’t rest or relax in this life without waiting for death. Or if she failed, she wasn’t worthy of love. Of living.

This woman has evolved over seven seasons.

It makes sense that she would keep evolving.

As for Carina, the suit up scene was totally a fan service and I’m here for it.

It was ridiculous and over the top, I didn’t need it, and that’s why it was so perfect!

Because it was just wacky and wonderful and so more of what the show should have leaned into over the years.

Carina being a badass and the lost storyline of getting her more involved in the field is a sad note, but I’m also relieved. Because they would not have done it justice and Carina is an amazing OB. She deserves to open her own practice and have the life she dreamed of with her wife.

Which ultimately is where they show ends up for these two.

Their life carries on together.

Their kids, their home, their friends, and doing what they love.

I do wish we could have seen both visions since everyone had a personal and a professional. What would Carina’s looked like?

Was she at Grey Sloan?

Was she running her own business? What happened?

I needed it to end more concretely or somehow tell me. I hope they release the deleted scenes. I know most shows are averse to this for some reason along with bloopers but come on! You already robbed of us of this couple, throw us a bone. Please!

Carina getting to be a badass out in the field though was a nice addition to the episode, but I’m confused why it didn’t involve Maya. Like we were right there?

Why didn’t Carina get to know Maya nearly died?

Why did the team now finally rally around Maya?

Why does Maya have to plaster on a smile like she’s happy for Andy when she shouldn’t have to?

Why does Andy get to break every rule in the book at every moment, but somehow only Maya is punished?

Honestly, that scene pissed me off.

Andy could just run out into the fire, which she should have died from, let’s be honest here. But not only does she survive, she’s praised, and people rejoice over her.

Except, she didn’t tell a soul where she was going or that she was heading for help. Which meant her team could have gotten hurt looking for her because they didn’t know what happened to her. They could have wasted precious time and resources.

But no. It’s fine.

IT’S NOT.

If Maya is punished for saving a kids life for breaking protocol, but Andy isn’t? Like what the hell?

There’s a part of me that’s sad to see this show go. But there’s also a part of me relieved that I don’t have to watch the horrific double standard on my TV anymore.

I only want Maya and Carina.

It’s all I wanted from this show.

And the ending doesn’t quite do them justice, but at least this show can no longer do them an injustice.

I also do not want them on Grey’s. Because that is another show I do not trust to get anything right.

Overall, though, my favorite scene was the moment when Carina and Maya meet in the ER.

The very place that Carina saw her for the first time.

The place where a nose started everything.

A place where Maya found her soulmate without ever knowing it, until she asked to buy her a drink later that night.

That Helm was there.

That Carina just dragged her wife outside to find a way to tell her wife that they’re finally having a little baby together. It worked.

All those moments leading to this one.

Maya and Carina have come full circle.

And I know a lot of people didn’t like the shot of the camera panning around them and I didn’t really like the shot in the first place during the proposal, but I love the callback to the proposal. Does that make sense?

Like the shot isn’t great, but going back to a moment when they choose each other over everything was great.

They decided to get married, in spite of not knowing what the future holds.

Yet here they are, years later… Happy and together.

The finale wasn’t perfect. I have my issues with it overall and how things ended and how Maya and Carina were treated right up to the last moment.

But I did enjoy the moments between them.

The flashes of the life they’re going to have.

Their three kids.

Maya being a better parent than hers ever were.

I love that Carina’s dreams came true. That they’ll be there for each other no matter what the future holds and that’s amazing. I love it.

Their lives are carrying on somewhere.

Probably in fanfics, but also in our hearts.

Thank you to Danielle and Stefania for bringing these two to our screens with all the love and care they deserved. I wish you both all the best and I hope you work together again one day.

Maya and Carina will forever be a favorite couple of mine, and I thank them for getting me through everything they did.
