Couples of Pride -Swarla

Here’s a couple whose show I’ve never watched, yet I have consumed sooooo much fanfiction on AO3 about them.

My goodness.

I really love the elder gay thing they’ve got going on here. With an evil supposedly dead wife and a bratty teenager to go along for the ride.

This couple is really fascinating to me because of how they took everyone by storm on Tumblr. For the longest time, I’ve just seen tons and tons of gifs of them on Tumblr. Just completing filling my feed.

Finally, I felt compelled to find out where this couple came from. Only to discover they were on Coronation Street, a soap in the UK. One of which, I had checked out previously because there was a gay couple. Only for one of them to perish in a collapsed building.

Which I later discovered is actually Carla’s collapsed building.

Typically, I am not a soap person so even checking it out the first time was a stretch for me.

The second time with Swarla – I went oh hell no.

So, I only know various things about this ship through what I’ve seen on Tumblr, through a handful of clips on YouTube like this one above, and everything I’ve read in fanfiction about them. Some of which I have recommended on my Fanfic Feature Fridays. You should totally check those out!

Slight note – if you’ve been following this, you’ll have noticed another soap couple but from Brazil. Brazilian soaps are nothing like the US or UK ones that go on forever and ever with people dying and coming back to life or just never ending. They never last more than three years. Brazilian soaps tell a story and then end. Typically, never lasting more than three years. If that. The one that couple is from, wasn’t even on a year, and completed it’s tale.

Which is nice to me, because soaps are constantly undoing character growth for the sake of drama, and I hate that.

Take Carla here, she’s been married like five or six times at this point. That is freaking crazy. If someone told me that in real life, I’d head for the hills. I would not marry or date them. Hell no. Clearly something isn’t right here.

Gots to go.

That is a main beef of soaps like this. They never end, thus they undo a lot of character work in order to maintain ridiculous levels of drama.

Brazilian soaps not so much.

Which is somewhat hilarious to me, because I actually enjoyed the Brazilian soap Tres Gracas much to the amusement and slight irritation of my Brazilian girlfriend who does not like soaps. Period. Not even the ones from her own country despite having some of the most critically acclaimed and internationally beloved soaps in the world. Go figure.

All of that to say, I know very little about the setting or the world I’ve found myself in.

However, I do love the couple. They’re a bit older than most w/w couples we get on TV and I love that. Romance doesn’t have to end because people hit a certain age.

I really enjoyed that one was grieving and dealing with moving on for the first time after her wife’s death. While struggling to deal with her teenager who would have preferred the other mother to still be there. As well as not taking it well that her mother is starting to move on and be interested in someone else.

It’s a nice story we don’t get to see very often between two women, and I think that’s lovely representation for everyone.

Especially on the UK’s oldest running soap. While it’s not my cup of tea, it is for a lot of people, and with a show with such rich history. It is a wonderful place to have more representation.

I also must admit that I really do love Carla.

Who appears so confused in some of the clips that she’s falling for a woman, but she also comes to the point where she’s just like, eh. This is happening. And rolls with it. So much so that she’s the instigator in the clip above to start bringing them together.

I really love the moment when Carla just arrives home and is like, don’t bother with the clothes. Neither of us are going to need them. Talk about freaking bold!

Also, this fandom is really amazing and hugely wonderful. They’re pretty chill from everything I’ve seen on Tumblr. Only wishing for the death of the late wife who apparently was not dead and is a complete bitch. So I can’t blame them for hating her. Or her coat.

There were a lot of discussions about the coat.

Overall, I just wanted to include them in the list because they’re a couple I had gotten into – somewhat – since the last Pride and felt they deserved to be honored. Because representation is always a win!
