Couples of Pride – Valu

This is by far and away one of my favorite couples on this year’s Pride List.

One of which is always going to take an honorary place regardless of how old or removed I become from the first time I saw this series.

I started watching it around the beginning of season two in the summer of 2023 – I believe. They were introduced to me on Tumblr (of course) through a gif set comparing their shower scene to one with Maya and Carina from Station 19.

Anyone who shipped Maya and Carina on Tumblr immediately had my attention when they brought up another couple and the moment I looked into this series, I fell in love with them.

For so many reasons.

I loved that they were a happily married couple who both worked and had a family together. Even though Luiza forgets when the series opens the last ten years of her life. You can tell how much love and care went into their lives to get them to first episode in the series.

Starting as ‘enemies’ which I frame like that because Valentina loved Luiza from the moment they met and it took Luiza a minute to fall too. She definitely viewed Valentina as an enemy for a bit there.

However, in present, you could tell these two women had forged a life together. Both owed their own businesses, loved each other deeply, and wanted a family together. And the lengths they were willing to go to bring that about was just amazing.

I love how fiercely they love each other.

Through all the ups and downs of life.

The domestic vibes. The family. And I love that as Valentina relays memories of their life together, she never sugarcoats things. She mentions that they had ups and downs like any couple. Some times in their relationship were easier than others. But they were always there for each other. She also mentions that they worked extremely hard to save for the house they own and didn’t see each other as often as they would have liked.

But they made it work because they were always reaching for the same goals.

They know each other. Their wishes, desires, and all the darkest parts of themselves.

They don’t hide from the tough things. They face them together. I really enjoyed that they felt like a real couple going through hardships and still choosing each other every time. Even when it was hard. Especially when it’s hard.

However, they also draw lines and boundaries with each other. Talking about their feelings and being there for each other when one is struggling with all the things that have happened to them. It’s them vs the world. Always.

For me, not only is this lovely to watch two women portraying this life. It’s it definitely something I wanted for myself. To have a partner through all the moments of life. Good and bad. Because there will always be bad moments. However, they’re definitely easier to get through when you share them with someone else. When someone holds your hand through the worst days of your life.

It’s domestic and sweet and funny and sexy and awkward and goofy and calm. It’s everything I wanted for myself one day.

Which leads me to – no matter how my opinion of the show may change. How I might outgrow it or it doesn’t hold up as the years pass by, this story and show will always hold a special place in my heart.

This series inspired me so much.

Because of this show, I wrote my own story set in Brazil about a female couple. I called it a gay Mad About You. I put all the things I wanted to see out into the world. All the things I hoped for myself.

Most of all, through this series I became so very interested in Brazilian culture. I loved how full of life and love it appeared. A sense of community and family we simply do not possess here in the US. They live life and celebrate it with abandon and I love that. The culture fascinated me into researching it and learning about a culture different yet unlike to my own.

Ultimately, leading to one of the greatest things in the world – the love of my life.

On this very site, I made a post to my Brazilian fans asking for some help with my story. I wanted to ensure that it was accurate and not insensitive to the culture. I wanted it to be a representation not a mockery. One of the people who reached out, I fell completely in love with.

For that alone, I will always be grateful to this series. Sparking a love for a culture I didn’t expect, only to meet the love of my life, and end up forever entangled in Brazilian culture.

It was an incredible experience, and I thank this series so much for everything.

And I thank you as always for reading! Please consider becoming a supporter!
