May The 4th Be With You

Star Wars!

I don’t know about anyone else out there, but this is a favorite set of movies for me. I think it’s a little popular. I don’t know, I’m not sure.

Hehe.

Small backstory!

For me, I’m at the exact age that I grew up with the prequels coming out in the theaters and I have an incredible fondness for them. I have also noticed that with my generation and younger getting older and more vocal, there’s less hatred for them.

Which I enjoy.

Overall, I enjoy the original and the prequels quite a bit! They’re a go to favorite set of movies and I have them in several versions.

I did watch the sequel trilogy as well in theaters, but I was older, and well… They’re not for me.

Like the prequels, their audience is younger and growing up. They’ll have their day in the sun like the prequels did. And I’m not here to bash the sequels. They’re just not for me, so I don’t watch them.

Easy.

So I’m going to focus on the six movies I enjoy like crazy for this Star Ways Day!

And by that, I’m going to toss a bit of speculation out into the galaxy!

Alright?

Lately, I’ve been watching a bunch of YouTube videos asking What If this or What if that happened in the Star Wars universe. Something I loved to do too when I was younger and really into the Star Wars fandom.

And it got me thinking about all the different What Ifs.

Until…

I stumbled across this thought in my brain. What if the Jedi Council refused to allow Obi-Wan to train Anakin after all?

I kept thinking what would that look like.

Because a lot of the versions show other possibilities of Anakin not turning to the Dark Side. Being pulled back. Figuring it out.

But honestly? I don’t find a lot of them true to the character.

If Palpatine gets involved with Anakin, he’ll still be able to twist the situation to his advantage.

Where could we change the story to stop Vader from coming to pass?

What events could I change or manipulate to work in my favor and stick to the characters as true as possible?

Then I thought back to The Phantom Menace.

In which, Anakin is complimented by Qui-Gon for giving selflessly without thinking of himself. His mother comments that he knows nothing of greed.

And it is true.

Outside the influence of Palpatine, Anakin is kind and selfless. He’s smart and clever and willing to help others without any thought of what it could gain him. He’s only interested in doing the right thing and helping someone in need.

He wants to create and see the stars.

How do we keep this Anakin?

If he’s found, Palpatine would know about him.

If he’s not found, there is no Chosen One and we deny Padme and Anakin each other. We even deny Anakin his freedom.

Although, we know the Lars family is out there somewhere. They’re going to free Shmi at some point. But would they be able to free Anakin?

Remember Watto didn’t want Qui-Gon to be able to take Anakin? He wanted to use a rigged cube that Qui-Gon used the Force to get the outcome he wanted since he couldn’t take both with him.

An event that triggers Anakin greatly being without his mother. But would they have managed to stay together? Would the Lars family be able to free them both?

Who knows?

Either way, I thought about it. I want Anakin to be freed and rejected from the Order. We’re still in his youthful, innocent, and selfless phase.

Here’s the thing, this still involves Palpatine in his life.

But it does afford me with some flexibility too. Because Anakin won’t be based on the same planet, making it harder for Palpatine to get to him.

And!

And I decided that if he was rejected from the Order, Padme would have stepped in to ensure he was properly cared for. We even know from a trilogy of books from Padme’s perspective that she had one of her handmaidens searching for Anakin’s mother to free her for years.

So, I decided to put these together.

Padme steps in for Anakin’s care. Freeing his mother and allowing them both to remain on Naboo.

I’d think Padme would ensure they had a place on her planet. A place Anakin himself said he would never leave if he didn’t have to.

Yes, this does mean Palpatine would still be able to get to Anakin given that Naboo is his home planet.

But, it changes with Padme’s involvement in Anakin’s life growing up.

Padme’s family is clearly doing well for themselves. Able to support a daughter in politics. Have multiple homes.

A lake house that would need a caretaker.

Like Shmi and Anakin. They could live there and work there, managing the property.

I feel like Anakin and Padme would end up with a close friendship. Despite Padme not being able to see him often given her royal duties, but she would still be keeping an eye on him. With her and her family around, Anakin would get a huge dose of politics.

Something the Jedi don’t really delve into unless they have to.

Something we see in the Clone Wars when Anakin tries to help Ahsoka understand the other side’s POV, Padme has to step in and teach her for him. Which is fine, but clearly demonstrates a lack of political understanding from Anakin.

Imagine if he grew up around her. Not just with Palpatine whispering in his ear.

But with Padme explaining all the sides and allowing Anakin the freedom to explore for himself.

Not to mention, with his mother around he wouldn’t be so hurting and afraid of the world around him. He would have her while he explored his new world and learned for himself. Instead of mistrusting everyone and everything, except the one guy who hands him ice cream.

His mother could help guide him.

Alongside Padme’s family.

I feel like Obi-Wan would still be around from time to time, teaching him about the Force. Helping him to understand it. Teaching him to be a Jedi, even if the Order would never recognize him as such, just in case.

Imagine Anakin trying to put off his training with his mother and Padme around him in his youth.

I feel like it would change the entire story, honestly.

With Padme so heavily involved in politics, it would influence Anakin greatly. Allowing him to see things differently and not be directly in Palpatine’s influence.

I also think Anakin would grow up and become a royal guard of some type like the ones Padme has protecting her in all the prequels. Because – well – he’s been nurturing a crush on her his entire life.

Some things won’t change.

I feel like he’d work in the palace because he’d be a natural, eventually assigned to Padme to protect her like he was in the second movie for the same reason. He wouldn’t bother her by having him around. She likes him.

They’d still fall in love, but hey guess what? No secrets this time around!

They could date like normal people and when Palpatine tries to change things around, Anakin shares his problems with her. Not to mention, the kids would come later.

I feel like this might give Anakin a better change against Palpatine and his manipulations in all honesty. If he had his mom and his crush, and close family with a somewhat normal life. Where he doesn’t feel like people are harshly judging him because Palpatine can’t whisper it in his ear every second of the day.

I also think Shmi and Padme might find his interest in Anakin when he’s not in the Order a little odd.

Like dude? That’s a little kid. Go away.

I know the Clone Wars would still happen without Anakin, but that might be better. Anakin would be around Padme, protecting her. A person who wants to end the war. Who is good and someone he can talk to on a daily basis.

There’s a Legends novel, that wasn’t at the time I read it, but anyway, where Padme is determined to prove to the Jedi that having an attachment to her, isn’t the worst thing for Anakin. Instead of breaking things off as requested, she marries Anakin instead.

I don’t feel she was entirely wrong about Anakin.

It’s not the worst for him to have attachments to her. It’s how he handled them that was wrong, and I don’t feel like the Jedi ever helped him understand how to let go. He just knew they were bad.

That’s all.

I feel like if he didn’t grow up as a Jedi, attached to his mother, but allowed to leave her nest in his own time. He’d understand that time marches on and people come in and out of our lives.

Padme would be around sometimes and other times, she was working.

She’d spend eight years as a queen. But she still cared about him. Their connection is still there. And it’s normal to leave people sometimes.

Like his mom. Just not when you’re nine and I feel like that had such an impact. He was too old and young at the same time.

He’d be a bit healthier emotionally this way. But you know, this is just my thoughts! What are yours? Leave me a comment!
