Here’s the honest truth, I didn’t even need the plot in this episode.
I really didn’t.
The entire thing storyline between Colter and his sister was way more interesting to me!
So yes, the missing kid was good and I liked the storyline, but it’s so far from the most important thing happening in this episode.
Let’s take a long walk here and look at Dory and Colter.
Colter appears in her classroom. He didn’t call ahead or warn her. He just appears there and it’s noted that Dory hasn’t heard from him in over a year. So what brings him here?
A job.
Not a personal visit.
This episode establishes that Colter is literally always on the move.
He never stays in one place. Not even for friends or family. He’s always off to the next job, the next thing, or vacation or interest. He’s so utterly content in being alone.
I think he enjoys being alone because then people can’t hurt him like his brother may or may not have. People can’t snap on him.
Bad things can’t happen to people, if he doesn’t let himself get attached to people.
But it’s also weird, right?
In the first few episodes, he sees his mother, and rushes to her side when she calls.
Except here, we learn that Dory left.
That Colter feels like he’s all his mother has without their eldest brother, their youngest sibling who left to live with relatives, and with their father dead.
He feels responsible for her.
Colter also doesn’t blame her for the way they were raised. Claiming that it was all Dad’s fault. Mom was just ‘stuck.’
Was she though Colter?
Because she still lives in the woods. And is hiding something. Someone moved the statue. So she’s not completely without secrets or a hostage to what your father wanted. Seeing as she’s still living where you all were.
Like?
Colter, somehow, I think your blinded by your bias to your brother, father, sister, and mother. You think one thing and no amount of words or reason is getting through to you.
Which is odd, because he’s all about reason.
Back to him and Dory.
The difference between them and yet how similar they are is staggering.
She’s got all the same survival skills he does. They were raised the same way. She can track, defend herself, and can easily survive without big brother to protect her.
I loved the moment when he’s about to pick the lock and she just uses her ID. Like really Colter? She literally works there. She has access, just use it.
She’s not easily rattled just like him.
But she’s clearly more well-adjusted to society than he is.
She interacts with people. Wants to keep in contact with her family on a regular basis. Gets annoyed with her brother for blowing her off while also understanding his reasoning. He was trying to save someone’s life. Doesn’t mean he couldn’t stop to call her or text to say he couldn’t make it.
Dory insists on a rational conversation about their family.
Trying to help him understand her point of view. While he wants nothing to do with it. She listens to his side, but also makes her points without getting mad, or exploding on him.
A clear sign, she’s had a lot to think about, and done work, and therapy to get to this point.
I also love that she firmly believes that she won’t snap like her parents, despite following their footsteps.
I also loved how calmly and rationally dismissed Colter’s weird findings.
She had perfectly reasonable and normal explanations for what Colter has found. Except the government stint which she couldn’t explain, but ultimately didn’t want to.
Like, she has a good point – who cares?
This has nothing to do with them anymore. Dad died. It was ruled an accident. Our parents were a little nutty and we had an odd childhood and I’d like to move on and not drudge it up. Thank you.
Like it’s not hurting us, so why go looking for trouble?
I kind of agree with her.
Like Colter, if you don’t go looking for the trouble that made your parents snap, that’s probably a smart choice.
Let it go.
Call and talk to your brother. Just move on. Take a deep breath and move forward.
Except he can’t. He won’t.
Because part of him blames his brother. Wants to understand the why of it all.
Why did they move us to the middle of nowhere? Why did Dad die? Did someone push him? Was it his brother? Why did he do it then? Why did all of this happen to them?
He wants the answers to the questions and Dory wants to leave them in the past.
Where does that leave them?
Having dinner together and not talking about the elephant in the room anymore.
I’m sure this will all come to a head and I can’t wait.
One last thing, I want to mention that I love Dory just showing up to give him shit for missing dinner the first time. She was so pissed when he opened the door.
She was still pissed even after finding out why, because he had a good reason, but he could have called. They were just standing in the airstream. He could have texted.
Taken five seconds and thought about his sister.
But he didn’t. And she had every right to be mad and give him shit. I wish he would have done a better apology, but I love that he refused to break his promise again. He went to have dinner. No matter how uncomfortable it was.
He went.
He tried.
I like that.
But I love Dory being allowed to have feelings and him recognize that those are valid.
Very nice.
