BLINDSPOT: Season Three, So Far!

Warning Shot aka episode 13 of season three is just the latest of season three in case you know, you haven’t been following too closely.

Season three has taken an unusual approach, there was a time jump, but not just any kind. Not the kind that jumps over the summer. This time jump went two years into the future.

It showed Jane and Kurt tying the knot, taking her advice from the season before to move closer to his daughter. They seemed happy together with their new life as they enjoyed fixing up their new home, spending time with Bethany, (a fitting name for Kurt’s daughter) and just being together. They even briefly touched upon a conversation on having children of their own.

Until, of course, in true TV and Blindspot fashion everything went completely to hell.

Armed men broke into their home in the middle of the night trying to kill Jane and collect a bounty put on her head by a former Sandstorm member who took his own life before he could be arrested. The CIA offered to put them into protective custody together. Jane agreed with Kurt to do it together but then left her ring and snuck out in the middle of the night.

Skip 18 months ahead, poor left behind Kurt finally locates his wife to bring her home, and help rescue the rest of the team who have been kidnapped.

Jeez, poor guys can’t catch a break.

Zapata, Reade, and Patterson are all being held in some kind of prison together. And the truth of the matter is they do more arguing with each other then the people holding them.

Reade is the new assistant director at the FBI. Zapata ditched the FBI and joined the CIA. Which as far as Reade is concerned, is a betrayal. Patterson took off for sunny California to decompress after everything that happened in her life with the tattoos.

Patterson simplifies the problem between Reade and Zapata by pointing out Reade is angry she bailed. Zapata is angry he didn’t contact her.

Together, the three of them find a way out of their cell by putting aside their personal problems, bonding over some unrated food, and getting picked up by Jane and Kurt.

The first episode starts off strong, quickly explaining the ending of the season two, ditching the bounty on Jane’s head, and getting everyone back together. It’s a quick clever episode that explains what everyone has been doing in a brief overall manner but still leaves room to play.

As we know, everyone on this show is prone to hiding things.

The strangest thing about coming into season three was after watching the characters for two seasons, you learn about them, you understand them, and you get to know them. With a time jump and unclear circumstances about what exactly they’ve all been up to for the last two years leaves you wondering who they are again.

It’s an interesting change for a show. But it also keeps things fresh because over the next 13 episodes there’s a lot to uncover.

Rich Dotcom is working for the good guys helping out now. Turns out he actually enjoys having earned their trust. Even goes so far as to throw away his freedom and Boston to prove it.

Patterson and Rich worked as part of group of hacktivists called The Three Blind Mice who acted like cyber Robin Hoods. Their third partner is rather nutty when she kidnaps them.

Jane did a little K&R during her time away. She also slept with a man named Clem but broke it off because she still loved Kurt. It’s also a gray area for some people because is this cheating? I don’t know. I don’t care. That’s for Kurt to decide.

I don’t think we really know what Zapata has been hiding but I’m sure it’ll come out sooner or later.

Hirst who seemed like a good person turned out to have killed one of their own and tried to pin it on Patterson. But in a weird game of hand off and undercover with stalling, buying time, diversions, and a lot of trust between each other the team managed to prove themselves in the right. Hirst was arrested.

Kurt’s secret turned out not to be entirely true. He believed he killed Jane’s daughter but the truth of the matter is, she’s still alive. But Kurt kept the secret from Jane which ticks her off.

Whew. Lot happens in season three.

I would also like to make a mention about how strange it is to have Reade in charge this season. He tends to ire on the side of caution which can be good but other times feels as if he’s playing it too safe. In this past episode Rich did make a good point about keeping himself close to the intel they need. Rich needs to appear to the dark community as if he’s still active. Not letting him go to a scene where he’d clearly go won’t help keep him of any use.

Side note, I loved how Rich got to go to the party anyway. I’ve always described Rich’s character like Jack Sparrow. He’s doing several crazy things that somehow get him everything he wants.

Speaking of crazy let’s talk about Jane’s brother, Roman.

Roman, well Roman, is his own special kind of crazy. He made friends with a guy, stole his identity, flirted with a woman, became her bodyguard, framed a man, got him killed, and took his place. Only to get a nice high profile assignment from his boss the man the team is trying to take down, he wants Roman to kill the FBI team.

Awesome. Wonderful. Perfect.

Seriously, what is Roman’s endgame?

I know he wanted these tattoos to be a penance for Jane but there seems to be a lot more going on under the surface. He’s infiltrated the group he’s set the team after and gotten close to the top. For what?

Did he not have the foresight that the team might end up in the crosshairs?

Who knows?

Hopefully Roman.

Honestly, I have no idea what to make of Roman this season. He was a foot man for his mother and sister (before her memory wipe) he’s never been a real mastermind of a plan. Maybe the hits on the team were an accidental mishap. Whoops. Better luck on your next attempt.

Since Roman was a foot man with no real part in master minding Sandstorm during the first two seasons. Seems he’s really moving up in the world. Now, my problem with Roman is I don’t know who he is without someone directing him. Shepard and Remi were always calling the shots.

What are Roman’s views on the world without someone taking him as a weapon and pointing him?

He didn’t seem to have a real stake in Sandstorm other then his mother ordering him around. He honestly tried to help the FBI during his stint without a memory.

I can’t decide if he’s really trying to help the world while annoying his sister or if he’s going to be even worse then Sandstorm itself. Guess I’ll have to wait and see how the rest of the season plays out.

As for odd family relations this season we learn Jane had a daughter when she was teenager. A daughter her mother forced her to give up. Avery.

Jane struggles with wanting to find her or wanting to leave her alone to live her life. Unfortunately, Kurt throws a wrench in the works when he confesses he killed her. Then we learn, nope she’s actually still alive, and surprise is working with Roman to fake her death.

For crying out loud!

I know she’s looking for her mother after what happened to her father but did she really believe the first person who talked to her?

Avery and Jane’s relationship has been strained from the moment they met. Avery seems to want little to nothing to do with her mother at first especially after a polygraph test to determine whether or not she was lying to them. In the last episode Kurt pushed Jane to just try reaching out because maybe she’s just as afraid as Jane is.

Season three has been a wild ride. It’s also been a little bit of retelling of the first two with the corrupt in charge, being routed out by the tattoos, and a crazy person master minding it all.

Of course, it’s had a few new things. For example, Jane and Kurt are together, married in fact. They’re also trying to work out a life without lies which due to their lifestyle seems to be rather hard for them. I hope they work it out. It’s been a long time coming for them and it would be a shame for it to end in divorce.

One of my favorite quotes was out of Zapata, Jane, and Kurt during the bomb scare when he put on a bomb suit and went to the van. He insisted he had enough training to go out there. Jane told him he would have gone regardless. Zapata reminded Jane if she could have she would have crawled into the bomb suit and gone with him. It’s true.

If Jane or Kurt is off doing something crazy, you know the other is not far behind.

Story of the show it seems.

See you next week!
