Invincible is a recent discovery of mine and just in time for me to get into the show, which I am also reviewing on Tuesdays, the video game came out.
It was actually really difficult to get my hands on a physical copy. I prefer physical video games to digital ones. Thank you very much. Please don’t judge me.
After some effort, I tracked down a copy and managed to play it.
The only thing I can really take a dig on this game about, is how much I just wanted more of the story mode.
Overall, the game is amazing.
The fighting mechanics and the different fighting styles from all the characters are just amazing. All their moves and combos are amazing.
As well as being super intense. My goodness, I died so many times!
However, I had the best time practicing on it once I managed to figure out how to get it off two player mode. Which for whatever reason I was stuck it. That made the fights less than stellar because no one was operating my second controller, meaning I could just beat the crap out of the non-existent player two.
Not very helpful in learning the overall game mechanics.
I did love that it came with an in sleeve to demonstrate all the buttons and combos. It made for a quick reference guide while I was getting my butt whooped several times.
Which I must say – even though I got my butt handed to me and felt like a complete noob, I never felt the urge to rage-quit. All I wanted was to keep playing and get better.
I must commend the game for keeping me interested even in the moments that I would normally become super frustrated at being unable to win any of the fights. Then I did get better at fighting and learning combos. It helped when I just stuck to one character as much as possible. Really getting a feel for their fighting style.
Though I must admit, Battle Beast and Allen the Alien are just freaking powerhouses. I felt unbeatable playing as them.
Overall, the game is a blast to play and there’s a lot to keep you interested. I wasn’t sure I’d like the online fighting game aspect since it’s not my typical type of game, but I really liked it.
However, the thing that I’m always excited for is a good story.
The only thing about this story that bothered me is that I wanted it to keep going. The graphics, the story, and the voice actors from the TV show made it feel like I was in the TV show and getting to participate. It was a lot of fun and sooooo good.
When I got to the end of it and the credits rolled, I actually yelled at my TV. “That’s it?!”
Like – how do you end it there? I need a resolution please and thank you! Please update or provide a DLC in the future because I really need more.
Also, the graphics of the game make all the cut scenes such a pleasure to watch. Which – I also know is thing people complained about it being so much better than the TV show. But think about how much the show has to animate vs this video game. We don’t have a lot of hours of content here like we do with a show. They could have had all the time in the world to get it to look this good because no one is driving you crazy begging for the next season yet.
You’re just chipping away at it.
Animation is tough and expensive. Cut them some slack.
Also, I enjoy good storylines and not just how something looks. So while I respect this game for having such stellar artwork, if it sucked, all the beauty in the world couldn’t save it for me.
The show is actually very good to watch and is interesting so I could care less about the art style being perfect or whatever. Especially, as someone who grew up watching things like Rugrats and Spongebob or Fairly Oddparents. Animation doesn’t need to be perfect. It needs to help tell me a good story.
Regardless, this game is amazing, and I really hope they will make a DLC or another game at some point because this game is a lot of fun!
I’m super excited to have this in my collection. What about you guys? Did you play it? Did you like it? Hate it? Do you prefer the story or the online aspect? Drop me a line and let me know!
