Is there anything in the world more perfect than Superman and Santa Claus?
Giving and caring, and they only visit on rare occasions. Not to mention, they’re both the epitome of goodness in the world.
Also, is there anything more wholesome than a Clark Kent becoming a little kid at Christmas time with his family and trying to sneak a look at his presents before Christmas?
No. No there isn’t.
Nor is there anything better than Jonathan and Martha Kent knowing that some things never change and still wrapping his presents with lead lined wrapping paper.
Side note, where did they get that wrapping paper in the first place? And how many strange looks did they get when having it custom ordered?
Because it had to be a custom-made wrapping paper.
Or is there anything else more wholesome in the Justice League Christmas Special, titled ‘Comfort and Joy’ than Clark still believing in Santa Claus?
I think this is a consistent between both Marvel and DC in making Santa Claus a real person that all the heroes believe in and respect. But it has been a favorite detail of mine since a certain Smallville special, Lexmas.
As Santa waxes on and on about the spirit of Christmas being dead while a young Superman tries to talk him into carrying on with his life, unbeknownst to him that he’s speaking to the real Santa. Ultimately, he reassures Santa that the spirit of Christmas is still alive and well because of himself and Chloe.
People who were willing to give up their Christmas Eve to ensure a bunch of kids got their presents.
Then he nearly plummets to his death.
Have no fear kids! Superman saved him. Even his booze too.
Then to repay Clark for his kindness and encourage the good behavior, Santa delivers all the toys Chloe collected for the kids giving them their night back.
And while Clark is a bit skeptical about the whole thing, Chloe makes an excellent point – the toys did disappear in an instant. Along with Santa himself.
How else would you explain it?
And while Smallville doesn’t lean on it too much, they’re little nod to Santa Claus is a little thing that makes me happy every time I watch it.
Even if Santa was getting drunk.
Because I think it perfectly encapsulates what Superman is for everyone. He is hope. For a better tomorrow and a better world.
Who better to inspire Santa Claus by returning his hope?
I love it.
I also love Lexmas as a Christmas special because it does what Smallville did so well and reminds me why the show was amazing in it’s heyday.
It makes you sympathizes with Luthor.
A villain. A true villain in every sense of the word. When people need to point out a truly terrible villain Lex Luthor is never far from their lips.
But Smallville offers a look at the kind of man Lex Luthor could be, if only he would stop giving into his darker side. A side that has always existed in him, but that he chooses to listen to more and more as the years of Smallville pass.
Here, Lex is given a chance to turn his life around and he decides he wants everything. Not just the happy ending, but the power to boot.
And ultimately, if you watch the series through that choice costs him a great deal.
Actually, it costs him everything.
Meanwhile, Clark chooses to be selfless while Lex chooses to be selfish.
And it’s a theme throughout all Smallville hammered home in one succinct episode.
Love it!
And then there’s Lois and Clark back in the 90s.
It had three Christmas specials. Each conveying their own message. The last of which is literally hope itself.
Ultimately, Clark is a little kid at Christmas time and throughout the series, he’s trying to bring joy to Lois Lane’s life. Trying to get her to see Christmas the way he sees it.
And ultimately, he succeeds before the final Christmas episode ends.
So much so, he manages to convince her to find hope when it was taken from all of them. Remembering quicker and quicker that the day is repeating itself. He brings something to the table that no one can take away.
Hope.
Hope for a better tomorrow.
And he always wants to share it with others.
Whether it’s Martian Manhunter, Lana Lang, Lois Lane, or the entire world, Clark Kent is there to remind everyone in their darkest moments to keep going.
I think that’s a lovely sentiment we all truly need right now.
Thanks for reading! See you next Sunday! Spread the love and read on!
