Flashback to start us off.
Which will explain a whole bunch of things, which is important – mind you. However, they do a pretty crappy job of telling me it’s a flashback until it’s pretty much over.
Until then, I’m confused about how on Earth she got herself into this situation and who is going to call Lalin. And if this has something to do with her mother. Did she order a hit on Arisa?
Like holy crap, maybe things won’t work out so terribly for Arisa and Lalin, if it turns out she’s actually the villain Arisa seems to think she is.
Except, nope. That’s not it. At all.
This is actually a flashback to explain that Arisa saved the loan shark’s life. Thus, she owes her. Big time. A relationship that she uses to her full advantage by getting the loan shark to deny a loan to Wei Ling. Forcing her to seek out alternative means to keep her company from sinking.
Which is how Arisa gets her foot in the door.
I kind of love that Arisa manages to switch gears a bit.
Like she fully wants to see her rival sink into the ocean never able to rise again. However, she’s not above using this to advantage to improve her overall image. Not only with Lalin, but with Wei Ling as well.
It appears like she’s swooped in and saved the day. Come to the rescue and everything.
Except she’s forced Wei Ling into this position.
Using her friendship to ensure that she wasn’t able to get funding. And she seems perfectly content to let her sink until this affects Lalin who brings the problem to Arisa’s attention. That she’s going to go bankrupt with some help.
Allowing Arisa to play the hero for Lalin, while also gaining control of part of the company.
That must kill Wei Ling. Who does appear to know there’s more to Arisa than she lets on.
However, I must commend Arisa for using all the situations to her advantage. Carefully, maneuvering Lalin to get what she wants. Appearing by all accounts to be a loving partner only wanting what’s best for her girlfriend.
Pretending she doesn’t want Lalin to choose between her and her mother. Trying to convince Lalin that her mother might be right. Letting Lalin think she might be able to drive a wedge between them. While also promising she’d fight for her.
It’s a good show.
Let’s it appear that Wei Ling is the monster for not allowing her daughter to love who she wants.
Also super refreshing that we’re not upset that it’s a woman. Just who the freaking woman is instead.
Like really? Her? My business rival? All the women in the world and you fall for that one? Really? You’re killing me, kid.
That’s the vibe Wei Ling gives off as she realizes that pressing too hard against her daughter’s choice of partner will only make her look bad. Instead, she tries to fight in another way. Forcing Arisa to live under her roof. Giving her amply time to keep an eye on her.
Except there’s a little problem with that.
While Arisa is for sure manipulating things with Lalin, she also does care for her.
The little moments when no one else is looking between them prove it. Holding her while she sleeps. Getting ready for bed with her. Visiting her in the office. Being so amused and in love when she screams so loudly, she can hear it through the door. All of the moments she spends with Lalin solidify the idea in my mind that she really is in love with her. Like rushing to her side when she calls upset.
Who does that if you don’t care?
Sure, it may also afford her new ways to go after Wei Ling, but I truly think she loves Lalin as well, and wants her.
So if Wei Ling wants to see if her intentions with her daughter are real, I don’t think she’s going to find a reason to break them up that way. I’d stick to proving the point you made in the last episode. When you knew that Arisa couldn’t have gotten the contract without doing something underhanded. Focus on that.
Perhaps you’ll have better luck going in that direction.
Showing that Arisa isn’t all she’s cracked up to be as a person, not just a girlfriend. Because overall, she’s pretty good to Lalin.
And I love Lalin checking in with her to see if she’s alright staying there with her mother. Being completely serious about it as well and willing to move if that’s what it took.
For the first time, Lalin isn’t quite as passive feeling as she has been. Especially in the argument with her mother. You could tell Arisa was a bit torn in wanting to hurt Wei Ling but not wanting to hurt Lalin. Even trying to remove herself and being shocked when Lalin stands her ground completely.
I think she was as surprised as I was by this sudden show of backbone.
Also, I’m super confused by her working at the company. Didn’t we decide in the first episode that she wanted to be a pianist? And not whatever the hell she’s doing now?
I must also agree with Arisa to have someone else do it or maybe call in an expert and ask them how to do it so you can understand it. Without struggling through it by yourself.
Just weird.
Overall, I am enjoying the show even if it’s not the best thing I’ve ever seen. But honestly, I don’t always need Oscar winning performances. Sometimes, I just want rot my teeth chocolate that feels like comfort. That’s what this is. A comfort food.
You’re sure all the drama and twists and turns will end up fine in the end. Like a Hallmark movie, but it’s still fun to watch us get there.
Not to mention, for whatever reason I do really enjoy watching Arisa and Wei Ling bounce off each other. They’re really good at taking shots at each other. Hitting tender spots. Getting up and swinging with another punch.
All the while, Lalin is cluelessly just chilling while these two are practically screaming at each other.
It’s going to be fun to watch this dynamic play out even more.
And I’m really curious as to what Arisa’s plan is to explain what she’s doing to her mother to Lalin. I imagine that conversation probably won’t go well.
Lastly, I really just enjoy the sweet relationship between the two leads.
While it’s tinged with toxic issues. Like you know the manipulating and the lying about why she’s going after her mother after promising not to lie or make her cry again. Definitely breaking that promise, can see that now.
Despite the toxic issues between them, there’s potential for a really good relationship. I don’t think Arisa has had anyone support her like Lalin does. The idea that she’s willing to go against her mother for her appears to shock and make her fall a little more for Lalin.
She takes care of her.
And does something that while it is to her advantage, she also does it because Lalin asks her to. Help her mother.
While her motives are gray as hell, she was perfectly willing to let the ship sink before Lalin stepped in and talked to Arisa about the problem. One that Arisa does solve. Only for Lalin.
Yes, she gets control in the company as well. But she didn’t appear to be looking for that before. It was just an added benefit of helping her girlfriend.
It’ll be interesting to see how this conflict plays out. Because Arisa wants to bring Wei Ling down, while Lalin doesn’t want that at all. What happens when those viewpoints clash? When everything comes to a head?
I’m here for it. Honestly. I think it’ll be great to watch.
Also, I cannot commend Faye enough for coming out of the gate hot with her first series and setting a tone. Her acting brought me here, but the storytelling has been good enough to keep me interested. And I’ve seen people having issues with the pacing, but I actually think it’s one of the better paced web series I’ve ever seen.
But that’s just me. Share your thoughts on the series with me! Are you enjoying it? Are you not? Let’s chat! I’m curious!
Thanks for reading! Onto the next episode!
Spread the love and read on!
