We need to talk… about a lot that happened in this episode.
Mark is disillusioned with being a hero because it’s gets in the way of having a life. And he’s a teenager so this is a big deal for him. Because of this, he seeks out Eve to talk to.
Eve is happily living her new life doing as she pleases to help the world and living away from her parents.
Cecil collects Debbie because she knows the truth and so does he. Apparently, he really has known all along. And they need to get to Mark before Nolan does.
Who is rehearsing his speech to his son about why he had to kill the Guardians.
In the process of trying to get to his son, he kills a shit ton of people. Including poor Donald who did not deserve that death. Especially when it did nothing to effect Nolan. Didn’t even really slow him down.
Did love the interaction between him and Cecil about the honor to serve. Really nice and touching moment that we don’t often get with people like Cecil.
He’s actually a pretty warm dude for the position he holds.
Like using (hopefully) already dead people to create more of the soldier thingies the guy was making last episode in an effort to find something that would be able to take down Nolan.
I really did enjoy watching Cecil throwing everything he could at Nolan. Clearly, he had been preparing and thinking about this for a long time. Using the time, he pretended not to know it was Nolan who killed the Guardians to build up whatever he could or whoever he could find to bring down Omni-Man.
Honestly, that was a great play.
Acting dumb while all along, he’s doing everything he can to find anything that can kill Omni-Man. Really loved that. I even loved that those tidbits are dropped into the episodes if you watch closely enough.
The big beast, he puts it on ice. He’s curious about the robot thingies from last episode and how well they were able to hold up against Mark. Which I don’t think at this point is a huge feat, but hey, take what you can get.
Testing Invincibles’ blood to find something to destroy it. Little things that he’s been slowly collecting in an attempt to take him down to protect the Earth. Even putting his own ass on the line to try and slow him down to get to Mark before Nolan.
Because the last thing we need if Nolan twisting the truth and making Mark think he’s somehow in the right.
And all of that careful planning would have worked too, if Mark hadn’t intervened to stop the giant squid monster thing to protect his father because no one had managed to get a message to him yet that his dad is actually super evil. No, we waited until he tore a dude in half in front of him for Mark to realize it.
Like instead of ordering Eve to leave and head to the Guardian HQ – why not explain it to her and have her get Mark? I mean, wasn’t that why we called her? Because she was with him?
She was right there to explain it to him.
And this would have worked in their favor because if Nolan attacked her for any reason, it would have triggered Mark to protect her. Because I don’t care what anyone says, they’re totally going to end up together. Mark is having a shitty day, and he leaves his best friend to find Eve for another perspective. Then when he’s all mopey and wants to give up on being a hero or some BS, she takes off to save the day.
Mark goes after her to ensure she’s safe and for no other reason. Even though I do not think she needs saving.
I do know that Mark would never let anything happen to her if he could help it. He cares about her too much.
Thus, no matter what, even though it would risk Eve, it would go a long way to getting Mark on their side. Instead of ending the episode with the two of them together. Also, it would give Mark back-up. Because while he’s strong, I doubt he can take down his father without some help.
And well, the other guys strong enough to do that are already dead.
No. I do not think the new Guardians are up to the task either.
I would have sent Eve and Mark together. Also, bad news coming from Eve would have gone down better than Cecil. Just saying.
Meanwhile, we have the Guardians sitting tight while the world is possibly coming to an end because they’re the last line of defense. Which is terrifying because I don’t want them to be any line of defense since they didn’t even know their leader broke two bad guys out of prison to have them make him a new body.
One he got by taking DNA from another team member because he’s crushing on Monster Girl. For sure.
It’s kind of crazy how much he wants her. And creepy.
Mostly creepy.
Actually, all of Robot is creepy and I don’t care for it. Don’t even care that he tried to put the bad guys back. He let them out in the first place. Bad idea! Yeesh.
Whew.
Robot gets a new body. Dead people have robot bodies. Immortal is brought back to life for about three seconds in a rage-fueled hatred to attack Nolan, only to die again.
How has this guy survived this long? You’d think a guy named the Immortal would be harder to kill?
I mean, I suppose it has something to do with the idea that Nolan is just stronger and that’s the point. To prove how powerful Nolan is. But without seeing the Immortal against anyone else and kick their butt, he just seems pathetic.
Also, could someone please explain to me why we keep seeing the same civilian family? The one with the stepson? Didn’t last episode mark like the third time we’ve seen them? Is this just a running gag like the cabbage dude in the Last Airbender or do they hold something more signficant to the story?
Frankly, I’m cool with either answer. I’m just wondering.
Now, one of the other things I loved about this episode was Eve and Mark. While I do think it was a poor choice to pull her from the fight so soon, I loved everything before that.
Mark is feeling sorry for himself, and Eve gives him some tough love.
Having a superhero alter ego doesn’t excuse you from being a shitty boyfriend. I mean, it does when the other person knows about it. At least, they know why. But the frustration is valid when they don’t know and you can’t manage to at least make decent excuses or lies.
She tells him he’s being stupid and holds him accountable. We all need someone like that in our lives.
Which is why I do think they’ll be perfect together.
And I’m even more convinced by that upon discovering this episode that Amber knows that Mark is Invincible. Has apparently known for weeks and is still super pissed at him.
Because he lied to her…
Ummm…
I feel like there’s a line for things. You know?
Like if you were together for six years and he didn’t tell you. Sure, be pissed. Seems right.
But you’ve been together like a month and you’re in high school. I didn’t tell anyone shit about myself in high school unless I really knew them. I’m not sharing anything personal with people I don’t know very well and trust completely at that age. Otherwise, it ends up all over the school or your friend group.
Also, it’s high school. Teenagers change their minds like trends.
And again, I cannot stress this enough, it’s high school.
I know last episode you were discussing your futures at school together, but I laughed then too. Because high school relationships don’t really last forever anymore. People change so much. And this isn’t just a romance thing. There are so many people I’m not longer friends with that I was in high school because life took us different places. We see the world differently.
It’s easy to be in love and together when you’re both heading in the same direction at school.
But then life will change after that. You’ll no longer have to be in the same school. Or even the same city. State. And so on.
That takes a pretty serious commitment to know you’ll be together for a long time. So yes, I can totally understand that Mark wasn’t ready to share that part of himself given literally everything.
Before someone shouts at me about Eve, he told Eve and she had to trust him as well not to spill the beans about her identity. Mutually assured destruction is always good when it comes to teens. Also, when it comes to superheroes, you can usually just trust each other without much else.
Nolan is the exception, not the rule.
Also, as for knowing they’ll end up together young or not, Mark and Eve aren’t together. They’re just friends right now. Building a pretty solid core foundation for a relationship down the line.
Plus, statistically, you’re more likely now to end up with your college sweetheart than your high school one. Unlike in say, my grandparents’ generation.
If Eve and Mark had gotten together in episode three or whatever it was, I would have fully expected a break-up down the line because they’re young. To determine whether or not they’re truly meant to end up together. However, now we have a much slower burn happening and that builds a better foundation than anything else.
Overall, this is a very good episode building suspense in all the right places as Omni-Man struggles to get to his son before anyone else does.
Which also suggests that like Cecil, Nolan isn’t sure which way his son is going to fall. On his dad’s side or not. Should be interesting to see how this plays out and whether or not Mark regrets taking out that monster before it could finish off Omni-Man for the world.
Since this is a superhero show, I’m betting Mark isn’t going to take his father’s news well.
