Broken (of) Love: 1×04 – Review

Welp, Wei Ling and Arisa are just taking pot shots at each other now. Aren’t they?

No loan for you.

I’ll take a percent of your company.

Find the secret shareholder.

Have your friend arrested for her illegal business.

Spy on each other.

Better not let the scandal hurt my daughter.

I won’t.

Jeez!

There’s a whole war going on between these two women and Lalin is just sort of skipping through a field of flowers oblivious as they go scorched earth around the field.

Everything around the field is on fire. But they’re both just blocking Lalin’s view of the world outside the grassy field of flowers, so she doesn’t realize they both kind of suck. Like, Wei Ling is one to talk about not liking Arisa’s motives, but it doesn’t appear that her hands are entirely clean as well.

If we’re to believe Arisa, everything she’s done to Wei Ling is because of something horrible she did to her. Pretty sure, she’s sure that Wei Ling killed her parents. Or is at least responsible for their deaths.

And clearly, Wei Ling is not above getting her hands dirty.

She for sure is the one who called the cops on the shark loan lady about her shady business. Leaking that Arisa’s was involved with her at one point. While conveniently leaving out that she was involved with her as well. Would be right now as well if not for Arisa asking her to leave you high and dry.

I mean, just based on what we’ve seen, Wei Ling isn’t above shady business dealings to get what she wants.

And neither is Arisa.

Honestly, if they team up, they’d be a force to be reckoned with.

Except for the whole enemies thing because Arisa is convinced Wei Ling is the devil.

So I think it’s a bit of pot calling kettle black here when Arisa and Wei Ling appear to be two peas of a pod. Wow, that was a lot of metaphor thingies there.

I’m just saying, Arisa and Wei Ling appear to have more in common than they don’t. Unless – of course – Wei Ling really did kill Arisa’s parents. In which case, that would be a major difference.

Because Arisa isn’t an angel by any stretch, she certainly doesn’t appear to be a murderer.

Although, to be fair, Wei Ling doesn’t appear to be one either.

Actually, funnily enough, when I started watching the series, I at first thought that Uncle Mek was the bad guy. The way he stepped into the first scene of his with the angry face and frown with his hair cut. I was like dude has the makings of the villain. I even showed the first episode or part of it, to my girlfriend and she thought he was the evil dude.

Out of everyone, I would have picked him.

However, that doesn’t mean looks can’t be deceiving. Wei Ling could just be amazing at hiding her true nature. And maybe that will help repair whatever damage happens to Arisa’s relationship to Lalin when the truth comes to light. Maybe because Wei Ling really is evil and Arisa will be the hero.

Right now though?

I just don’t get that vibe. Am I the only one?

To me, they all just feel like people. Complicated and flawed people.

Except Lalin. Who is just happily going on in her own little love story completely oblivious to the fact that her partner and mother are using her in their war game.

Because yes, even Wei Ling is using her daughter.

That little dig at the end about not wanting this scandal to affect her daughter does appear to acknowledge that Wei Ling knows that Arisa has real feelings for Lalin. Or at the very least, cannot lose her affections in the war against Wei Ling and uses that to her advantage to press Arisa’s buttons.

I do think it more the former than the latter to be fair.

Then we have Arisa using Lalin to get information about the secret shareholder.

Which makes more sense to me now. Because Arisa wanted half the shares, but she just wanted half of Wei Ling’s shares. Gaining her like a quarter of the company. Leaving control in Wei Ling’s hands because the secret shareholder doesn’t want or have a day. Leaving Wei Ling with a controlling percentage because of it.

However, if Arisa can get her hands on those shares, she’ll have controlling interest over the company that Wei Ling loves so dearly.

I don’t blame her for not wanting to tell Arisa anything about the secret shareholder. Because when we meet her, through Lalin who gives Arisa far too much information, and in to meet the woman.

Which Wei Ling totally clocks for what it is.

We discover that this woman is Wei Ling’s sister-in-law and has never liked Wei Ling. She only got the shares when her brother died. And she has no interest in controlling the company. Merely taking the money she gets from it to gamble.

Something that Lalin doesn’t like.

But Arisa views as an opening to gain her trust.

Her ability to play cards. Combined with her large sums of money and her love of Lalin and the fact that she doesn’t care for Wei Ling immediately put her into the winning category. Thus, Arisa gets an ally.

Even if she doesn’t take the shares, if she transfers support to Arisa instead of Wei Ling. We’ll have problems.

Ultimately though, taking control from Wei Ling that way would be ideal. Because she could explain it easier to Lalin that her aunt gave her control. What was she supposed to do?

Still not great, but it would be better than wrestling it away and making herself look bad to Lalin.

I must admit, I like the little song and dance that Arisa and Wei Ling are doing with each other. Xeque Mate boasts the idea that it’s a chess match happening. But I think this web series might be doing it a little better.

Only because Arisa’s ability to roll with the changes to her plans is way better than Maya’s. Maya and company tend to freak out when things don’t go according to plan or when people react differently than what they wanted.

Here? Arisa is much more willingly to allow things to go off the rails and use these choices to her advantage. Love is getting in the way, but not to her detriment right now. She’s still focused on getting what she wants.

Although, I don’t think anyone is buying that she’s ‘acting’ in love with Lalin.

Because there’s no need for the thousands of little things she does when no one is looking. Even if she was just claiming to do it to keep Lalin from falling out of love with her, it’s still too much. I don’t actively search for people I don’t want to spend time with. I’d do the bare minimum.

But no, Arisa goes into the kitchen to find her. Offers to help her. Brings her a snack and turns into a flirtation. A weird one with camera shots I didn’t need, but flirting nonetheless.

She puts lotion on her arms. Tells her that she’ll never be lonely again because she has her in her life. Gives her a flower. Hides the idea that her mother might have been cheating on her father throughout their entire relationship from Lalin to keep her from getting hurt. Looks at Lalin like she turns the entire world when she plays the piano for her at her surprise birthday party.

Like there are so many little things that she doesn’t need to do.

Begging for a hug before being shoved out of the kitchen. Wiping Lalin’s face when she’s got flour on it.

So many moments that I would just not do.

Either that or Arisa is the most committed actress on the planet. Committing to the bit even when there is absolutely no need to. Someone get her an Oscar. Damn.

Overall, this was a good episode and I’m looking forward to seeing how things unfold! Onto the next one!
