NCIS: Hawai’i – Cabin Fever

Kate and Lucy have graced my screen together again!

Thank goodness, I was starting to go through withdrawal!

I have so many thoughts about this episode, I’m not even sure where to start!

Like that lady took a trip to Mars far too seriously after a murder took place! I don’t care about your trip to Mars more than finding out who killed someone! Why do you?

Also, I’m over the whole Mars exploring thing. Seriously, we can’t get our shit together on this planet, let’s not starting bothering another one.

The sharing of what everyone wanted to be when they grew up was adorable.

I wanted to be a professional softball player.

Kate met Commander Chase!

Ernie was the hero of the day!

Lucy and Ernie together are too good for this world!

Smug, red tape Whistler is kind of hot.

Kai and Jesse having their own little bromance in the background of the episode was adorable.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this show does the found family justice.

It’s so good. The moment at the end when the Space Force lady visits Tennant and says her team is lucky to have her and we turn to the joyful group behind them was amazing.

Everyone is so comfortable and happy to be together.

Jesse and Kai happily risk their lives to protect each other.

Kate – the ever secretive one who plays her emotions close to her chest – revealed what she wanted to be and laughs along, knowing their not laughing at her or making fun of her.

I love that Tennant was the first to speak after she said it to the group.

While Lucy was gone, Tennant told her she was family. In subsequent episodes, she’s been following through on that promise.

She stood up for Kate when Kai got angry about how long the AJ investigation was. She includes her. She protects her. And in this episode, she makes it clear no one is to embarrass Kate when she was so honest with them.

I also love Lucy in this moment!

Kate whispers it to her and without hesitation she tells her to tell the team. She knows they’ll accept Kate without worry.

Because they already have.

Kate meets Commander Chase and gives her a kind compliment just as her own girlfriend does in that moment. Making Kate feel welcome amongst the rest of the family.

Lucy and Kate were adorable and attached at the hip throughout the episode. They worked together to get through things and used each other’s strengths to their advantages.

I love that Kate appeared with help despite not being formerly requested.

Something, season one Kate may not have done.

Something before Lucy, she would never had considered.

In this episode, we see she doesn’t even hesitate to jump in and assist when her girlfriend.

It’s very sweet.

And an excellent show of growth.

Ernie and Lucy’s relationship is downright delightful.

You know, the funny thing? Most people would try to say brother and sister relationship, but it’s never fit quite right in my mind.

They remind me more of this brother and sister I knew growing up. His sister was much younger than he was. He was in his early twenties and she was 15. She was adopted, but I literally had no idea until I met their parents.

He treated her wonderfully. She played softball with me and he spent all his free time with her, helping her with softball, cooking, and being a good brother. They had their own little language. They had a deal to try as many sushi places as they could. She adored him, but not in an older brother worship sort of thing.

He treated her like an adult, an equal. And there was always an underlying respect between them.

Their bond was closer than any sibling relationship I’d seen. He had been there to see all her milestones, since she was adopted when she was a baby. He embraced the idea of a sister with all his heart. He never resented her.

She was his best friend.

I get the same vibe from Ernie and Lucy. Deeper than just siblings or best friends. They’re a mix of both.

I love it.

This episode lets it shine because Lucy frantically wants to be there for her friend while letting him have his moment in the sun.

Ernie loves Lucy and of course she’s the one to drop him off and give him advice. Just as he was happy to welcome her home.

Kai and Jesse – on the other hand – have this brother and brother relationship where they just like to annoy the crap out of each other, but so help the person who tries to hurt one of them.

In this episode, they each save the other, and bond together sweetly.

They tease. They prod each other. They annoy each other. But it’s how they show affection because they are not the most touchy feely people in the world. Love it.

Tennant is a badass.

No can manage to keep the peace while fighting red tape and getting what she needs like she can. She juggles the Space Force woman well enough to keep inching closer to what she wants while maintaining her calm so this isn’t made more difficult.

It’s a line not many walk well, but Tennant is amazing.

Her scene with Ernie was adorable. Actually, all her scenes with him were wonderful!

I loved that she sent him for medical care and wanted him to rest, not work. I love that Commander Chase allowed him to call, but not run. And that she clarified that with Tennant. It was very sweet.

In that moment, all the actors did a wonderful job letting the love for one another shine through. I could feel the care and worry through the screen.

I could feel Lucy feeling green around the gills over the stitches. Kate’s subtle pick-up on it, and amusement. Tennant and Lucy’s worry over Ernie. Kate’s confidence that he would continue to do his job until they very end, like her, and that Commander Chase was there. She wouldn’t let Ernie hurt himself.

It was so wonderful. Kudos to the entire team for making that scene so touching and then spinning and it and making Lucy add a touch of humor.

This show balances it’s cast, it’s humor, it’s seriousness so well.

I simply love this show.

The best part – for me – is showing up on Mondays and knowing it’s going to be a good time. No matter what.

Even without Lucy or Kate, this show delivers compelling episodes with even more compelling characters who are trying to do the right thing. It’s led by a badass woman.

With other badass women portrayed right alongside her. While the men are perfectly content to be on the frontlines with them. They don’t overshadow.

If anything, we know less about Jesse than anyone else on the show.

If you’ve never watched it, you should.
