Couples of Pride – Sanvers

Ah, Sanvers. The first w/w couple that brought me to an entirely new side of Tumblr and myself as well.

In fact, I’m sure there are reviews or commentary on this couple from back then where I stated that I was not queer. Well, someone go on back there and tell her she was wrong!

This couple started it all for me and this scene is literally the moment that sent me down a Tumblr rabbit hole I never knew existed and now practically live in.

This is also the couple I will never forgive the writers for taking away from us via the dumbest of reasons.

Seriously, what was that?

Kids are a dealbreaker for me and while it was the most terrifying question I asked my girlfriend, I think I asked on date three because I knew getting any deeper would be a bad idea before I clarified this is something I wanted. And something that if she did not, would lead to the end of the relationship.

Because I’m not out here to change people’s minds.

Another choice that frustrated me about this couple as well.

Just Alex’s steadfast refusal to admit that she wanted kids and to ask Maggie directly if this was something she could ever consider. Or was that a firm no.

Instead, she tries to change her mind by fixing family issues.

You know, some people just don’t want kids and that’s cool.

Before ever even watching this show, I worked with a guy who flat out said he didn’t want kids. He was in his early 20s like me at the time and everyone he ever said this to at work said the same thing, ‘you’ll change your mind when you’re older.’ I remember flat out flipping out on a coworker because I had heard this said to him several times and I was sick of it.

I expressly told them that he’s allowed to change his mind yes, but it’s not a given. If he doesn’t want kids that’s totally fine. A child should have a parent that wants them and vice versa. If that’s not him, then absolutely hell no, he shouldn’t have kids.

That’s huge freaking commitment you want to force him into because it’s just a thing we should do. And if I’m sick of listening to people say that shit to him, I can’t imagine how he must feel listening to his feelings on the matter be invalidated because he’s 20 and doesn’t know better.

Regardless of age, that’s what he wants and believes.

I hated it so much. When talking to him and another coworker who was just asking him why he doesn’t want kids because she just doesn’t understand. She also asked why I didn’t seem bothered by his statement.

First of all, it had nothing to do with me. I’m not dating him nor was I interested in him. It’s his life and I have no say, like he has none in mine. Pretty simple.

I said the only advice I could give him is to be upfront with whoever he’s dating because for some people it’s a dealbreaker. Like myself.

And I stand by that advice.

I don’t care if you don’t want kids or to get married or live in a city or on the moon, but you should be upfront with the person you’re dating if you feel this relationship could be serious. They have a right to decide for themselves whether or not this a dealbreaker for them. And under no circumstances is it up to you or them to ‘change’ their minds.

You can talk and discuss and understand. But if they’re firm on this, it’s better to let them go than make it worse by spending years of your life trying to get this person to change their mind. Or what will happen if they do change their mind and resent you and the kid for it.

Nope. Better to find someone who shares your ideals.

Which is all the more reason that it’s so hard to believe that Maggie and Alex, two women firmly set in their own minds and beliefs wouldn’t have had that discussion before they were engaged! Just no.

Even Alex in season two states that knowing she was gay helped clarify things but overall doesn’t change herself. She just gets herself better. Meaning that she already had a firm viewpoint on herself and what she wants.

Not to mention the near-death thing at the end of season two when they discuss all the firsts they’re going to have and how many they want together. You’re telling me kids just didn’t come up? Yeah right.

It was such a half-baked cop out and I hated it.

Which is annoying because I loved the couple so much and they helped me so much. Expanding my world view and my self view.

Sigh. What do you guys think? Did the end of Sanvers sort of ruin the whole relationship? Or can you still enjoy season two of Sanvers?
