SUPERGIRL: Schott Through The Heart

Welcome back Supergirl!

My, how I have missed you!

Nine weeks without the woman in the cape, is just nine weeks too long as far as I’m concerned!

What do you guys think? You agree?

Normally, I do wait to put together this review until later but I couldn’t wait.

I was a little worried with Supergirl coming back with an episode where it’s focus would be on a side character, but Supergirl pulled it off.

Winn is an underused character Supergirl hasn’t truly shined the light on since season one where the show introduced his father, Winslow Schott Sr. Even last year’s plotline with Guardian and Lyra never gave had enough meat to be interesting.

In this episode of Supergirl, Winn got to shine. Show off his brains, quick thinking, and his found family.

In fact, this episode was filled with found families and real family problems. This is the kind of episode of Supergirl I love watching.

At no point did the show take itself too seriously. There was no grand explanation for the villain, just a quick how and why, let’s move on kind of deal. It was refreshing to have a one and done villain after all these run ins with the Worldkillers. It was also nice to not jump right back into that plot.

This episode worked well because every character had something to do. Supergirl works best with character driven plots and less plot driven characters. It’s always fun watching them sink their teeth into the emotional and the silly.

With the episode’s Kara-oke opening scene it set the stage for the whimsical.

Everyone was having fun and enjoying themselves for the first time in what has felt like forever. They were a family enjoying a night out together.

Winn and James have been friends since the show’s early episodes. In a stark reminder of how much the show has changed where that relationship has fallen wayside this season we got to see great conversations between them. James wanted his friend to take a chance other people would jump at, a chance to know their mother. To have a second chance.

Winn’s struggle to accept what happened between him and his mother felt very real. It was easy to see he didn’t quite believe her about his father’s threats until he saw what his father was willing to do even in death. I hope we get the chance to see more of them in the future and the thread doesn’t fall into the forgotten Supergirl storylines.

As for James it was an excellent change of pace to see him actually get to do something besides be a useless love interest or boring character trying to wedge himself into the plot. For the first time in a long time I felt myself enjoying watching him connect to Winn and encourage his friend.

Despite his – slightly – despite attempts to get into contact with Lena, James held his own in this episode. He had a good moment with Mon-el, on stage, and with Winn. If they keep this up I might not mind having him around.

As for Alex’s piece with the two men from Mars, I loved it. She was perfect the whole time. From stepping in with the pizza, to recognizing the small signs at dinner, confronting J’onn’s father about his condition, leaving to not upset him, and pushing J’onn to find out for himself. I loved it.

Alex has a compassion to rival Supergirl’s. She cares so deeply and strongly for people it’s incredible.

I know a couple episodes ago with the Worldkiller she struggled to find it but the truth is Alex loves so fiercely and strongly that she will shut anything down she believes will hurt those she loves.

However, if there is someone she loves or cares for there is nothing in the world she won’t do.

Her reluctance to lie to J’onn showcases the bond those two have. They don’t keep secrets. They get in the way. Alex and J’onn are as close as father and daughter. He was even supposed to walk her down the aisle. She also doesn’t wish to do anything that will hurt J’onn and keeping something like that, would.

She also makes a great point. There’s nothing anyone can really do to stop his mind from decaying as he puts it. Better let J’onn know now. Let them enjoy the time they have. Let J’onn find his feet with his father while he still has him, while he’s still mostly here. They can work through it now, together.

The moment at the bar when Alex notices him and just gives him a hug was beautiful. No words were needed. All J’onn needed was to know he wasn’t alone. He will still have Alex. No matter what. I hope this lends to a arc for the two of them to go through. I doubt Alex will leave him to deal with it alone.

I also wonder if J’onn went to the bar looking for Alex and company. If he did, that’s really cool.

Now, last but not least Mon-el. Mon-el has been an interesting character from the start. Watching him try to go from a self-absorbed, arrogant, cocky, and careless person to a remarkable, kind-hearted, and compassionate person is good plot. If you can make it work. I think Supergirl had more struggles with making it happen last year then most people would like.

This year, this season, I think they’ve finally nailed the character they wanted him to become. A man truly worthy of being a hero, of working with Kara, and so it may seem being her partner.

Unfortunately, he’s still married. And apparently his wife has conspired to return him to a time where the woman who changed everything for him still resides. Oh dear.

His apology to Kara was awesome. I believed he was sorry for what he lied about last year, but I also believed he apologized to help fix his relationship with Kara. His conversation about finally getting it and wanting to apologize again was a nice touch. Even though it’s in the past, it was nice to see how much he’s grown because he believed she deserved a genuine for no other reason then he wronged her.

Of course, I completely understood Kara’s position about not wanting to be the one to talk to him about his relationship. And I loved that Mon-el already knew how weird and wrong that would be. He had something else in mind because this affects his life, her future, and it could help save the world. That’s more important then two people’s feelings.

It was also nice to see a conversation between them that did not revolve around their former relationship or his one with Imra. It was nice to see them on more equal footing talking about saving the world.

If the endgame is to keep Mon-el sticking around and be Kara’s partner and possibly more I am more then happy to welcome this version of Mon-el.

On the other hand, I do have a question. One that’s been bugging me, actually, now that I really think about it.

Ready?

Okay, here it is: What does Imra get out of this?

Aside from the obvious which is saving the world. Why would she risk everything to come here?

Since it was an arranged marriage then evolved into something akin to love and Mon-el as she said had no interest in anyone else. She knows how he felt for Kara. Her emblem is on both his suits, he tried to return to her, he still wears her necklace, and he never had a real chance to find closure or get over her. Why risk it?

To save the world?

Supergirl already established not everything could sacrifice their love for the world. Not even Superman.

What does she get?

Her husband in the comics, his sister was mentioned. Does she get him?

It would be a nice wrap up if she does. She saves her husband, her one true love from the comics. Maybe he was killed in the blight. Maybe avoiding keeps him alive. If it does, Mon-el doesn’t need to go home. Maybe they both get what they want. I don’t know. I’m just speculating.

After all this, I believe they’re keeping Mon-el around. They’ve made him into a hero. Why go through this work just to send him packing? This is just my theory. We’ve still got a couple more episodes to find out.

So, tell me what you think!

Read on and spread the love!
