LUCIFER: Infernal Guinea Pig

Watch out for that bus!

Whoops.

Wow. That was an episode.

I need to start by saying Abel is nothing like I expected him to be and I loved it. The hitting on every woman he saw was funny. I loved that every woman turned their nose up at him too.

It’s an interesting torture Abel has.

Cain’s torture is equally as interesting.

Truth be told I found their punishments enthralling. The fact that Abel ended up in Hell anyway, despite seeming like the ‘good’ brother is interesting. It speaks to a lot of their history we – as the audience – don’t know or even understand.

Amenadiel has been preaching this season about faith, believing there is a reason for everything his Father does, and trying to get others to be it too.

I believe there’s more to Cain and Abel’s story then we can see.

Clearly, both brothers have done something horrible to spend all of time paying for it.

What’s curious about it though is I believe what Lucifer says about Hell is true. The doors are unlocked. Their guilt keeps them inside.

What is Abel feeling guilty over?

Does he feel like he drove his brother to the brink of madness? Does he feel like he caused his own death by pushing him too far? Does he feel bad in some way about what happened between them? Wish things could have been different? Does he feel like the victim in all of this and won’t take responsibility for his own mistakes? His own hand in his death and relationship with his brother?

Cain’s imprisonment is a form of Hell too. He can never rest. He can never find peace. Those he comes to love and care for all die in the end.

He’s always alone.

It’s perfect Abel is killed again at the end. This time I believe in part due to his own hand, but also to God putting him back where he belongs.

The truth of the matter is, if either brother ever manages to find their own key to the prison it does lie with the other. It is something inside of themselves.

Maybe they need to learn to forgive themselves or find remorse for what they did to each other.

Or maybe they are doomed to spend forever wallowing in anguish. I don’t know. I’m not God. But I love trying to solve the riddles laid before us on this show.

Now, one of my favorite parts to this episode was Lucifer’s decision to back off ticking off Dear Old Dad.

Amenadiel gave his brother sound advice reminding him while he can take whatever Father dishes out there are other ways to make him suffer.

Enter Chloe.

Always Chloe.

Even if Lucifer denies it. Hides it. Tries not to pay it any attention. He cares deeply for the Detective.

He may be able to escape, but Chloe won’t.

Something that becomes all too apparent when her life is on the line dealing with a bomb as a direct result of his actions taken against his Father.

He brought Abel back to life. They track Abel down, only to get caught up with a bomb, and Chloe decides she’s not waiting for the bomb squad. Which of course makes Lucifer crazy.

Honestly, if Lucifer could he’d probably wrap Chloe up in bubble wrap, stick her in a padded bullet proof, bomb proof, escape proof room, and throw away the key.

She’d find a way out.

As I’ve said before, their dynamic is one of my favorite things about the entire show. Romantic or not, I love watching the self absorbed Lucifer care for someone so selfless. She baffles him. He baffles her. But they care about each other.

Which is why Lucifer refused to leave her. If she stays, he stays. Because they’re partners.

It’s also why Chloe was struggling without him. Sure, she’s more then capable of doing her job without him. That’s not the issue. The issue is feeling like she could be replaced at any moment that bothers her.

She and Lucifer are friends, partners, and work very well together. They’ve gotten used to each other’s quirks. Lucifer’s endless strange behavior. They’ve found a rhythm together. So, when Lucifer leaves her hanging without a word to work with someone else for the day, she feels slighted.

It’s abated in typical Lucifer fashion as he fixes it without realizing by not leaving because they are partners.

And even if she doesn’t know it, he went back on his word because keeping her safe was more important. It’s a hard thing to do, but because of who it was for Lucifer insisted it was the easiest decision ever made.

Seriously, their dynamic is awesome. They work even when they don’t work. They’re good together because their views of the world don’t completely line up.

It’s fun to watch. It’s never boring. I never feel a sense of come on already.

Sigh.

Well, those are my thoughts on this episode from two weeks ago. I believe. Anyway, let me know what you thought!
