Newsflash!
Lena Luthor isn’t evil. Who’s shocked?
Not me.
Seriously, how many is she evil or not tests does Lena Luthor have to go through before we can believe she’s a good person? They don’t make Kara and Alex do this. Not even James.
Also, after all of this if they do decide to make Lena Luthor evil I will be supremely ticked off. I love Lena. She’s a great addition to the cast and I would love to see her come into her own. Make the Luthor name something she can be proud of. Make the city believe she’s really here to help.
I believed it her very first episode. I hope she sticks to being the good person I know her to be.
I must confess I loved the little things about Lena’s character this episode. The important moment of her deciding to come clean to Kara about intending to kill Edge. That moment felt important to me because she trusted Kara with something very deep and dark about herself. She trusted her best friend in the world wouldn’t see her differently, would stand by her side.
It was a nice moment because it shows the amount of trust Lena has in her best friend. How far they’ve come in their relationship that Lena knows Kara won’t assume the worst of her. Will understand the impulse for what it was, an impulse.
Another important moment for Lena was telling Kara about seeing Mon-el with Supergirl. I think the fact she feels responsible for Kara’s profound unhappiness over the last few months due to her involvement over getting rid of the Daxamites. It speaks to Lena’s character the first thing she thought to do was tell Kara she saw him.
All of these things speak to Lena’s honesty and openness with Kara. Lena has never been truly dishonest with Kara. In last night’s episode she had plenty of moments to lie. Most characters start to tell the truth but when interrupted and asked again later let it go.
Lena choose not to.
She told Kara the honest ugly truth about what she almost did to Edge. She told Kara she discovered something about herself. Told Kara she saw her mother and was planning to kill Edge that night. Then she asked for help.
It’s unfortunate that open and honest communication Lena feels with Kara is only a one way street. Kara is still hiding her secret from Lena. And she told Lena she already knew about Mon-el but never mentioned before letting Lena see him again. She let a friend live with the guilt of sending away her best friend’s boyfriend.
I know I said I don’t want Lena to become a villain and I don’t, but I could see how it could happen. With the lies piling up from Kara and Lena always choosing honesty I can see how such a choice could cause a rift between the two.
I hope Kara chooses to come clean soon about her identity because keeping it from Lena is barbaric at this point. She’s proven her trustworthiness outside her family. She’s Kara’s best friend. What’s keeping it from her doing at this point?
It’s laughable Lena hasn’t figured it out yet or been told yet. There’s no logical reason to keep it from her. Why? Because she’s related to criminals?
So’s Winn.
I think it’s past time for Lena Luthor to know the truth about Supergirl. And for Kara to be the one to tell her to soothe the blow because if it comes from anyone else: It will not end well.
On another note, unlike last week’s episode that felt like it was shoving the feminist ideals down my throat, this week manages it much better. All four of the forefront female characters get a lot to work with this week and a chance to do it together.
Psi and Imra feel like throwaway characters right now. If either of them died or left tomorrow the audience really won’t care. Neither were in this week’s episode and I doubt most people really took notice. Livewire is a good longstanding character but killing her right after she chooses Kara as a friend just ticks the audience off. Paired with Kara there’s little weight to the emotional ties the audience has to the four women heading off to save the world together.
This week we have four female characters the audience has come to love going through a lot and doing it together. Sure, they didn’t really save the world but they were there for each other during some really difficult real life problems.
Sure, most people, as a sarcastic Lena points out, don’t have mothers trying to kill people or people trying to kill them. It’s real problem inflated for TV. A lot of people have relationship issues with their parents, an identity crisis because of it. A lot of people have made enemies out of people, maybe not in trying to kill them but who hasn’t pissed someone off in the past?
As for Sam, thinking your sick is a common problem amongst people. A few months ago I found a lump on my breast that scared the hell out of me. Getting sick happens. Feeling terrified when your the only family your child has is a real thing.
Kara stood beside Lena as she found herself. Empowered her during a dark hour. Alex assured Sam it could be something minor as her brain spiraled off into the worst of the worst. The four women banded together to promise if something ever happened to Sam they would make sure Ruby was taken care of, so even if it is something serious all Sam needed to worry about was getting better.
They stood together again when they encouraged Sam to take the win when it was nothing serious. Little do they know.
It’s an empowering moment watching four friends stand together in the face of whatever. Watching them band together and promise Ruby will never be alone no matter what happens. She has three other people in her life who will fight to protect her.
However, it’s unfortunate to know something is going to blow this friendship apart. The audience knows Sam is really Reign. How long before that comes to light? How long before these four friends realize a great enemy is sitting right before them?
That will be a tough moment to swallow.
It also appears to be foreshadowing something else too. This little moment gave way to remind the audience Ruby will not be alone should something happen to Sam. We know Sam is Reign. We know Reign won’t win, the show is not named after her. We also know Alex wants to have a child of her own and has babysat Ruby.
Wonder what’s going on there? Me too.
Some other stray thoughts I have rattling around was this was a nice use of Guardian. I honestly never thought I’d be able to say that. Last season I despised the Guardian plotline. The nice part about last night, was it finally fit with the rest of the show. In season two he was too off to the side and I believe if you took it out nothing would really change.
I’m still not buying the Lena and James thing. Suddenly, he knows Lena better then Kara? What? Up until this season he was convinced she was evil. I understand working together and her proving herself time and time again changed his mind but Kara has been on her side longer. She was the one Lena confessed to and asked for help. Sorry James! You’re still a sucky love interest.
In all truth I root for Supercorp over Lena/James. It just didn’t have enough onscreen development to work for me. Unlike Kara and Lena. Just saying.
Another thing why do we keep involving Mon-el? Is his ship being repaired? Is he still leaving? Because he looked like he was having more fun helping Kara in this episode then he has all season. What’s the point? Why did we bring the Legion? If they were really here by accident they should have left already. What is going on there?
So many questions. So much season still left.
Let me know what everyone else thinks! Who else doesn’t go for the Lena/James thing? Would you rather see Kara with Lena? Mon-el? Brainy? Nobody? Maybe the girl just wants some peace instead of being hounded about her love life.
Thanks for stopping by!
