Invincible: That Actually Hurt – Review

Did he just watch his son get his ass kicked and nearly die and he didn’t do anything to help him?

I was just wondering last week if he actually loved his wife or family. This week, it feels like they were trying to give me an answer and it doesn’t look good.

He was just watching!

How could you just watch that? And not do anything? To teach your son a lesson? That’s crazy.

Like there’s teaching him a lesson and there’s letting him die. It appears you were choosing to let him die. The only reason he did not was because Cecil and company arrived to piece him back together.

What the hell was that?

I’m extra mad at Omni-Man.

Alright, there’s a chance this is going to be a rage filled babble review, stay with me!

I hate Eve’s father. I do not like Omni-Man. I think they both belong in the shitty dad’s club for different reasons.

Forgive Rex? Seriously? I’m not sure where Eve found her courage for her own self-respect, but it did not come from her family because apparently, they don’t even seem to respect her!

Mark’s father tried to let him die.

We’re not doing great in the parental market here!

Mark’s father also tried to discourage him from helping people in need because it was ‘beneath him.’ However, Debbie – the only good parent – is over here like helping people is never a waste of time or beneath anyone. This is up to Mark to decide what kind of hero he is.

Oo, go Mama!

I like her.

Which is awesome, because Sandra Oh voices her and that’s just icing on the cake.

Then we’ve got J.K. Simmons pitted against her as Nolan and this is just downright heaven. If Laura Bailey does a character in this series at some point, I could die happy.

Speaking of voice actors, Machine Head is voiced by Jeffery Donovan! I freaking love him so much. Ever since Burn Notice! And he has such range and is capable of so much. Hearing him play a wild ass villain and shout things like ‘I have money’ is the most amazing thing ever.

Not to mention, his little chat with Titan about how things were going to happen.

Then knowing that everyone was coming for him and still not being able to get himself out of this jam was awesome. I did enjoy that Titan managed to turn Machine Head’s escape plan against him.

Very nicely done.

However, listening to Jeffery Donovan play such an exciting and interesting villain was something I didn’t know I needed, but am thrilled about regardless. So much so, I finished this episode hoping against hope that this is not the last of Machine Head we’ll ever see. Donovan was amazing and I want more. Please, please, please, tell me there will be more Machine Head so I can enjoy his brand of crazy voiced by a favorite actor of mine.

Please and thank you!

Then we have Titan who successfully played everyone including me about what his true intentions were. I did think he wanted to take down the bad guy and free that part of the city from his reign. However, I did not see it coming that he would take over that empire for himself.

Nor did I see him convincing the teleporter dude to be on his side.

It was very slick.

I can appreciate the fact that he played both sides so smoothly. Even with Machine Head calculating all the variables. Guess he didn’t bank on Titan being just as cold and calculating as he is to win.

His moment with his daughter was cute.

And I loved that he’s not quite a bad guy either. I imagine he will be using his newfound power to make the place he lives better, because it is clear that he cares for the people and the world he lives in. Unlike Machine Head who wants to get rich. I think part of Titan taking over is that he wants to protect his neighborhood and having all the power means that he can do just that.

So a bad, not a bad, bad guy.

Love it.

Love his daughter.

It was very good.

Did not like it when he just left Mark to die. I mean, dude, you could have called 911 or something for him. Help him out a little bit, instead of just leaving him to die there. That was cold in a way I did not except from Titan. Given the caring nature he displayed to people during his montage.

Which was also amazing. I loved that. It was a great way to showcase his character and moral fiber without being too much.

While also leading into Machine Head’s brand of crazy.

Elsewhere, Mark is constantly blowing off Amber to save the world. Which as predicted has started to grate on her nerves. Eve manages to help convince her not to dump Mark after he misses his last chance because – you know – he’s nearly killed.

I would also like to know why Eve was called.

I mean, I know they’re good friends. That she would want to know. But who was on the other side of the phone that knew that as well. One that wouldn’t call Amber? You know, his girlfriend. Not just his friend.

Yes, it is easier to tell Eve what happened because she knows he’s Invincible.

But I’m sure we’re going to end up making up a story to explain what happened to Mark, regardless. Why not do it then?

Was it Cecil? Debbie? Probably not Nolan.

He does not seem the type.

Cecil saves Mark but swipes some DNA to try and murder it.

Scientist reveals the cells will just not die. Which is a terrifying thought to be honest. It’s totally one thing to tell me that Superman’s DNA would probably do the same thing on Earth unless exposed to Kryptonite. And I’d be like yeah. Okay. So?

We don’t really have to worry about the Big Blue Boy Scout. He’s a good guy. We’re fine.

But you tell me that about Omni-Man? And I’m like, we’re screwed. Everyone is going to die. Because unlike Superman whose motives I’m always sure about, I have no idea what is up with Omni-Man.

Or what his plan for his son is.

Since you know, again, he left him to die.

For a moment last week, I was like, nah, he must love his family. Now? I’m pretty sure he’s a psychopath with some excellent acting chops.

Damn.

Next, unsurprisingly the new Guardians are exactly as useless as myself and Omni-Man predicted.

Now we’ve got them injured and Monster Girl is dying and Robot is freaking out about this. I think he has a crush on her. Which may be just a little creepy. Or a lot. I haven’t decided yet. I’ll get back to you.

Debbie has found Darkblood’s notebook. She has more suspicions.

So she gets her husband out of the house by having him fly around the world to get stuff for dinner. And I think Debbie ought to work for Cecil because she was way better at handling Nolan than he is.

Then she finds his suit.

You know the one he wanted back after he woke up. Why did you keep it? What is wrong with you? Throw that sucker into the sun man.

It’s probably coated in evidence that you killed the Guardians.

Or is that what you used to plant the evidence on Darkblood? Oh shit. Did you? Why not get rid of it afterwards? Seriously, you can fly it to the sun or Mars or throw it into space. Why keep it and risk it being found? Why?

Also, I’m struck once again by the urge to think he does really love his family at times because without much hesitation he just flies off to get what she asked. Completely unaware or suspricous that she might know something about him.

By the way, Debbie, keep a closer eye on the time next time. Please! I was stressing there.

Other news that occurred this episode, Robot is probably evil. He’s working with the Twins for something and he’s the one who helped them escape. I do not like this one bit.

You know, I thought his suggestion to wipe a city from the map was extreme before, but now I’m starting to think it’s because he doesn’t actually give a damn about anyone. He’s just maneuvering himself into places with power. Using people and whatever he needs to get ahead.

Although, I do think he does care for Monster Girl.

Still sort of creepy though.

But yeah, I think Robot is evil.

Eve said goodbye to her very horrible parents and left them. They appear to like nothing about her at all. The fact that she’s a superhero or has a mind of her own.

They were only cool with things because Rex was there.

Apparently, they could trust him to take care of things but not Eve. Which makes no sense to me at all given that Eve is clearly more capable than he is.

Not to mention trustworthy since she’s not the one who lied to get someone else in his bed during a funeral his girlfriend was attending.

Just yikes.

Yikes.

Very messed up episode. Very messed up.

But in a good way… if that makes any sense. All the messed-up things had a point and served character understanding or how they operate or the plot itself. It all had a purpose and was good. Still messed up though.
