Percy Jackson: We Board the Princess Andromeda – Review

Do you think there’s anything worse than boarding a ship you think is a nice normal ride off to whenever you need to go because a god helped you out, just to find out it’s filled with monsters, and all your enemies?

No?

I mean, I’m sure way worse will happen to Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson because this is only episode three, but hey, right now it sucks.

Hermes gets them a ride on their enemies’ cruise ship.

Thank you for being a freaking cruise ship!

Did not like the yacht from the movie, thank you very much.

Here we have the Princess Andromeda in all it’s glory and I love it. I saw it in the distance last episode and got super excited because I knew it was coming. It was here. It’s a cruise ship and their day is about to go to sh*t even more than they thought.

They can’t just grab some food and relax while they drift along to the Sea of Monsters.

Nope.

They’ve got to deal with the guys who attacked camp. Demigods who have joined Luke. The ones who aged out of camp. Which to me always felt like a death sentence or abandonment when described in the book. Like, hey great you’re all grown up now. Get out. Good luck. Don’t come knocking if there’s monsters or you don’t know how to function in society because you have no one outside camp and have been secluded here since you were seven.

Bye bye.

No, I can’t blame all the demigods for believing Luke wanted to make the world better without the gods.

Percy and Annabeth just know the Titans won’t be any better. They might in fact be much, much worse considering what they know about them. And they’re just using the demigods to gain the power they need.

I get the anger from the defectors. I just don’t think siding with someone worse than the gods, like you know the people who ate their children or at least thought that was cool is a good idea. At least the gods just ignore you. They don’t chow down on you. There’s a little camp to try and teach you to survive. You know, there’s some effort there.

I expect way more carnage from the Titans.

Food for thought.

Regardless, we’re faced with Luke again.

Tyson builds a bomb despite liking some of the monsters. Which I don’t blame him. They’re not all bad. There’s a prejudice. So many layers of themes here.

But Tyson loves his brother and Annabeth, so for them he blows the place up.

Luke tries to convince them to join him to no avail, because they’re not blind to the truth.

Meanwhile, the demigod who tried to murder them on the deck would like them very much dead because she knows there’s no convincing them to join. Which might make her the smartest person in Luke’s army while also being the most dumb to attack Percy and Annabeth in the first place. Not sure how you saw that going in your favor.

Seriously.

Clarisse’s father doesn’t really believe in her and doesn’t help much with the crew he gifts her either by making them doubt her the moment she’s left in command.

I agree with Ares as well, why does he get the losers? Because they lost so they’re not in the Elysian Fields or something? I need a better explanation on that one.

She chooses no one to go with her on the quest because she fears the prophecy given to her.

And after reading all his novels and hearing so many prophecies from the oracle, I’m not sure why anyone bothers to figure them out anymore. You’ll never guess how it shakes out and trying is only going to drive you crazy or walk you right into the prophecy. Just let it be.

You’ll be way less stressed.

I also will never understand the thing of seeing the Oracle either.

Go see this creepy lady who will give you a prophecy that will screw with your head while on a dangerous mission you freaking child. Because never let it be forgotten that these are children being sent off to do this stuff.

Clarisse lies to her dead soldiers.

Someone please explain the Blockbuster guy to me.

Ares sucks.

Percy wants to fight Luke. Annabeth thinks he’ll lose. But hey, he didn’t die at the end of the first book or last season when standing against Luke, so I think that should count for something.

Percy and Annabeth have a safe word.

Which I thought was a good idea until Percy pointed out that Annabeth could just use it to stop a fight or get him to do what she wants. Not that I think she’d abuse her power over him like that, but I also for sure think she’d do it once or twice because he’s being a such a Seaweed Brain.

It was also super self-aware of Percy to understand he shouldn’t know.

It might be worse.

But I also understand that Annabeth doesn’t like this sitting between them, while Percy tries to make it a non-thing.

I love that he chose the word ‘boon.’

He’s so ridiculous.

Annabeth and Percy are one of my favorite duos and this season is truly proving why that is so true. They work really well together even when they’re not quite getting along. They believe in each other, but they’ll bicker like no one else most of the time. They always have each other’s back even when they don’t agree with how they got there in the first place.

They’ll glare at each other and kick some butt, then resume glaring.

They love each other. They bother each other.

But there’s no one they’d rather spend their time with. Even when they’re at their most annoyed, it’s still better than being with anyone else. And I love that.

Because everyone should have that.

Romantic or not.

We all need those people who keep us in check when we’re being idiots. Gives us a dose of reality when we get too obsessed with something.

Ultimately, Percy and Annabeth work things out and get off the ship in a lifeboat together.

Annabeth is concerned that Luke might be right about her not knowing Thalia as well as she thinks. But Percy is steadfast in believing in Annabeth. For him, it’s very simple. He believes in Annabeth, not Luke. Therefore, she must be right. Whether or not she factually is, is almost unimportant to Percy.

Because Annabeth must have gone through the facts already, all he needs to do is listen, and do as he’s told.

A thing that occurs often as the books carry on.

He just does whatever Annabeth says. She’s right, therefore he must do it. Very simple.

Annabeth sees the complicated world, whereas Percy believes that Annabeth is too smart not to be right about everything. And he’s already decided that Luke is evil and unsavable. Easy.

I very much love that about Percy.

Overall, I enjoyed this episode. Annabeth and Percy continue to be such highlights for me. And somehow Clarisse’s scenes are not terrible. We didn’t really get them in the book because it takes place from Percy’s POV. But it was a nice addition to see how much she wants to succeed and prove her father wrong or right.

I don’t know.

She just wants to stand out to him.

Though I doubt it’s possible.

He’s a moron who doesn’t see that he’s managed to strike gold with his kid who wants so badly to please him and probably can if you gave her a little nudge. But instead, like all the gods, you only care about your kids when it’s important to you. Like making you look good.

Ugh. Did I mention the gods suck? Because they do.

Onto the next episode.
