The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Because You Left – Review

I’d like to say I’m surprised… But I’m not.

I’d be lying.

Ah, Joel.

You f*cking deserved that. Gotta say man. You’re standing there on the street thinking about all the wonderful times you had with your wife. The woman who birthed your children and stood by you, for who knows what reason.

Mostly, because I’m not even sure at this point the show has anything nice to say about you.

I thought for a second they’d try, but I guess we’re past that.

Because seriously, for thinking about how much she’s been there for you, and how good you had it after throwing it all away. Only for you to come and say, ‘I’ll give it another shot.’

Nope. Should have thought about that second shot before you opened your damn mouth and ruined the first shot. Because she’s right. I’m not even sure why I agree with her, but you left.

No, I’m wrong. I take that back.

I do know why.

Because she needs to be able to count on the husband she chooses to be there and provide for her and her kids. In that time, she needs that stability and you’ve already proven that if you get bored or have a bad night, that you’re going to run away with your tail tucked between your legs.

She needs someone who can stay.

Or she needs to be alone to figure out how to make it on her own.

Because guess what, Joel?

If she took you back – and that’s a big if – she would carry on with the life she’s leading right now. She’d keep looking to make her own way in the world because she knows she can never trust you to stay again.

Either you’re in or you’re out. And you already picked out, Joel!

Not to mention, she’s literally just heard a wonderful man sing his wife’s praises for all the work she does while he goes out to earn a living. He has no idea how she does it. But she does. He comes home and the house is kept, there’s food, and their child is still alive. Bigger and growing and she’s caring for him every step.

That’s a guy who respects his wife.

He goes to work, but she takes care of home.

I loved that little detail.

I also loved the odd revelation that Miriam isn’t even sure she wanted kids. She doesn’t have a photo of them. Honestly, given how we’ve seen the children up to this point, I believe her.

She may not have a maternal bone in her body.

She asked if that happens.

In that time, you’re not allowed to say or think that. A woman’s job was to be a wife and a mother, not to have jobs or opinions or do things outside those two designated areas.

Her son didn’t even acknowledge her in the first episode when she came to collect him at her parents. The children are not mentioned once before she enters the apartment. I mean, there’s a brief mention of the kids but she’s clearly lying to get her husband a good time slot, so I didn’t really believe she had kids.

Not until they appear on screen.

Then we’re discussing a baby’s forehead as though that’s not a terrible thing to say about your daughter. Your son doesn’t acknowledge your existence and is being raised by a TV.

Yep, maybe not supposed to be a mom.

I don’t know. It happens. It’s okay. Not during your lifetime, unfortunately for you. You’re living in a time period where it’s expected beyond all reason to have children. Whether you can or not. Whether you want them or not.

Also, going to cite Joel again for being horrible, because I don’t think he’s asked about his kids once.

Do you care dude? Or are you trying to dump them too?

Am I being mean to Joel? Or not mean enough? Drop me a comment.

I love that she just smokes weed and had no idea what it was. Heads to court and bad mouths the judge. Almost entirely refuses to apologize, because she shouldn’t. I don’t not understand how foul language is against the law.

I just don’t.

Maybe exposing yourself was a bad idea.

Or continuing to run a potty mouth right in front of a judge. When we’re clearly against that sort of stupidity.

It was funny, nonetheless.

Especially, sending the lawyer to collect the money like she was a mob boss or something.

Loved that.

Loved the lawyer too. He had her off the hook until she started swearing again. I even enjoyed that he slipped her a card because he’s pretty sure she’ll find herself right back here.

Good luck arguing her stellar reputation when she’s there for 33rd time.

Why didn’t your husband come down here? How could this not be important to him?

Dude doesn’t even care if his kids are okay. He’s just living it up with his secretary right now. No, I don’t think he’d take the morning off. I think he be appalled she’s a better comedian than he is.

Also, she is not a child.

She is perfectly capable of coming to court to plead her own case. Even if she sucks at it and doesn’t let the lawyer talk as he was supposed.

Future reference for anyone out there, let the lawyer talk. If you don’t like what he says or his plan, get a new lawyer, do not try to represent yourself. That would be bad unless you have a law degree.

Food for thought.

We’ve resolved the apartment issue.

Because Miriam’s mother hides in her room with the blinds closed everywhere to inform her husband that their daughter was in trouble and he wasn’t doing anything. Did she have a headache? Was she guilting him? I’m a little confused on the interpretation I’m supposed to have from that scene.

Regardless, we get Abe – her father – rushing off to Joel’s father to offer to buy half the apartment.

Like they did (didn’t) with the Temple seats.

He swallows his pride so hard I thought he was going to choke. Damn.

Then he gives him a coat for his wife and things are settled. Joel’s father says there’s nothing to worry about since his son has no follow through.

Leading me once again to believe that Miriam has been steering this ship the whole time they’ve been together.

Hey, Joel, do you think if you’d told the force of nature on your side that you wanted to be a professional stand-up comic, she may have made that happen? I do.

Except now you’ve tossed her to the side and she’s going to do it for herself now.

Way to go, dumba*s.

Joel’s father is proven right when Joel is filled with regret and returns to his wife at the end of the episode only for her to be alone in the scene and get a flashback of her telling him to pound sand.

I think Abe is genuinely torn here as well.

He wants her to have a husband so she’s safe and cared for like she should be after he dies. That’s the ‘right’ way to do things. However, he doesn’t particularly care for Joel since he left. He considers him a weak man and his daughter not picking him the second time indicates she doesn’t trust him to stay.

Abe appears torn between pride and wanting his daughter safe and sound.

Like there’s a right way to do things, but Joel screwed that up entirely so now we’re going to make do in a new way. One he’s not thrilled about because it’s not the norm. It’s just not how things are done.

But I do think there’s a part of him that was proud of his daughter for not letting Joel come back and hurt her again.

All in all, a much better episode than the last.

I love the comedian she’s made friends with. That he’s a big deal, yet she has no idea. Overall, it’s good. I like this train wreck and I can’t wait to see what breaks next.
