Double Parked: 1×01 – Review

What is this show?

Absolutely craziness.

Wild.

These people were trying to have a baby.

Four roommates. Two are a couple of two women, and the rest are friends. One roommate is a male, is donating his sperm to the cause.

They’ve been collectively trying for 2 years to no avail.

Still no baby. Upon the last attempt, they were told it had not worked. Dejected, upset, and sad, they went home and drank about it.

And sometimes, that’s the thing you need to do.

Sometimes, you need to let off steam. They were in the comfort of their own home, with their friends, in a safe place to let loose, and go a little crazy because life has been mean.

However, with lots of drinking usually comes poor decision making skills.

Like a shot glass, turkey baster, sperm, and alternate egg.

Yep.

They decided to try the other woman in the couple to have the baby with the same sperm from the friend and just did it. Right there. In the bathroom.

And it worked.

But also, so did the original attempt.

The doctor screwed up!

Which not only brings back horrible memories from a time with my own shitty doctor, but is also so screwed up. Because this doctor’s poor filing system or testing or whatever the heck happened, caused another life to be created.

How often can you say shit like that?

They opted to try something different because it hadn’t been working.

Now, they have not only one, but two babies to contend with.

Because as revealed to us and the couple, they’re both expecting. Hence the name ‘Double Parked.’ Which, clever.

Also terrifying.

It’s like twins but way weirder. No idea how that’s going to work out.

Also, I am enjoying this show because it’s utterly insane.

The chaotic doctor. The wacky roommates. Both of them getting pregnant at the same time. I mean, that’s a nice schtick for a sitcom we’ve never had before.

But I also love the sense of realism as well.

Because they were both depressed. One more than the other as she felt like she was somehow less of a woman after two years of trying.

And the other is left unable to figure out how to truly support her in this devastation anymore. After all, there’s only so many times you can say everything will be fine or we’ll try again before eventually it loses meaning.

Or before there might be a realization it won’t happen.

And two years of trying feels like you’re on the cusp of that.

That moment when you might have to accept something you weren’t prepared for.

This episode was good, but it also felt like a lot of set-up to get to the moment where it’s revealed they’re both having babies.

Which the pay off was good. The emotional build up was good, but there’s not much to the overall episode since it’s doing so much work setting up the characters, backstory, and the emotional gravity of that final moment.

I look forward though to seeing what it’ll do next! Onto the next episode!
