The Legend of Vox Machina: Thordak – Review

Grog feels a type of way about killing ‘babies.’

Which – you know – on most days I would find adorable of him. Like yes, Grog we do not smash defenseless babies to death in most instances.

Which is also a sentence I didn’t think I would ever write. But hey, fantasy series and cats have a tendency to do that to you.

Regardless, Grog has a moment of crisis with Scanlan.

And you know, it’s the worst time to have a crisis of conscience, Grog!

But I also feel that was for sure a Travis moment because he plays such a good moron. I mean that lovingly as well. Grog is such an idiot sometimes and Travis plays into so well. He’s so unbothered by pretending to be an idiot and you need that in someone playing someone who doesn’t understand everything.

Because they will just break it down like a four-year-old and be like, but I’m not supposed to do this.

And everyone around Grog will be forced into the parent role of ‘this is an exception.’ Please stop asking questions that make us all uncomfortable.

Like it’s one the things I admire about him playing Grog.

Just like I admire Ashley Johnson for leaning into Yasha’s absolute crap charisma every time she flirted with Beau. It was just perfect.

Like, yep, this is the character I made. I accept the stupidy that comes with them.

But also, how that can be utterly hilarious and wonderful at the same time. Because if Travis just did this mid campaign of this very serious moment of planning dragon baby murder, I am picturing the cast just losing their shit. LIKE THIS IS NOT THE TIME! But also, funny man.

BUT SERIOUSLY, KILL THE EGGS!

Especially Laura. Did he get threatened with bodily harm? Or was it a level below the time the broom was nearly destroyed?

Because in the follow-up of getting Grog over his slight crisis about killing babies, he went to town smashing everything in sight. Oh, and I just love the way he delivers, ‘I would like to RAGGEEEE!’

His deep voice is so good for there.

Ugh. These people are so crazy talented. I love them. I’m so grateful they’re graving my screens.

Oh, and another thing about the baby dragon murder. They seem really easy to kill while they’re in their eggs. Is that by design? Like is it that way in the D&D world as well?

Because these suckers seem incredibly difficult to kill. Even the ones that were released as babies on Whitestone seemed pretty tough to kill.

I mean, definitely way easier than full grown ones.

But these just didn’t even stand a chance.

I suppose they’re supposed to have a parent protecting and paying attention to them. Not just slaughtering armies for the fun of it, instead of watching his nest.

Which you know, leads to him being less than thrilled with the baby murder. He wants to kill and destroy everyone.

But with the combined might of everyone.

Mostly everyone.

We lost a few people along the way. Like Kash.

Two people who had refused to show up, decided to come help anyway, and one of them was lost.

And just so terribly as well. He didn’t even stand a chance and then the Matron of Ravens was right there just taking his soul away. It’s kind of horrifying seeing what Vax sees. I would not want to watch my friend go into the afterlife like that.

I mean, even though watching him die wasn’t great either. I just think watching them go so quickly during the shocking moment made it even harder to swallow because Vax and I knew there was nothing to be done. He was just dead. Gone.

No Pike or anyone else to bring him back.

Breaking the heart of his love.

Damn. That hurt.

Much like Vex previously, both of them want to make the deaths worth something. Make them mean something. And if they don’t stop Thordak, it means nothing.

Forcing them further into the fight to take him down. And they do.

Not without cost, sure. But Thordak and his offsprings are dead. Now we can mourn. Grieve properly. Have some funerals. Start putting life back together. Right?

NO!

Because remember how for multiple reviews now I’ve been screaming that Keyleth was right and everyone should have been listening to her. Suddenly, because the dragon ‘helped’ kill Thordak.

You know, during a moment when it was pretty clear he wasn’t going to be winning anymore. She just hedged her bets. I don’t think she really sided with Vox Machina.

AND I WAS RIGHT!

I’m very spicy this review, I feel.

Mostly because Keyleth has been right this whole time and no one listened. So much so, that she even came to doubt herself. To the point that she felt she needed to apologize to the dragon for not believing her good intentions in helping them. Then you know, she reveals she was playing them the whole time.

Tries to kill Keyleth and Vax arrives, just takes off with the body of Thordak.

Right, I’m sure that’s going to go well.

I would like to remind everyone that from the start of the season, Keyleth said not to trust the dragon, and she was right. And I’m even more annoyed that she doubted herself at all. Because she was right. I believed her! I didn’t think we should trust this shifty ass dragon.

Yet here we are.

With a problem possibly bigger than Thordak.

My goodness, I didn’t think that would be a thing I would say. Damn.

I’m having a few of those today. I would also like to smack all of Vox Machina for ever listening to the dragon. Smack Keyleth for doubting herself.

Keyleth should trust herself more. Maybe she will now. Maybe now the others will too.

Damn.

Well, that was an episode and I have a lot of angry feelings about it. Mostly because I didn’t trust the dragon and the party decided to. I knew it was a bad idea, and I’ve been yelling at the TV a lot, but you know they can’t hear me. They just did what they wanted and now, it’s going to bite them in the ass.

But hey, at least most of the Chroma Conclave is dead.

That’s something.

His heirs are dead.

Lots of people are dead and sad. And they may have made the situation worse by not killing the last dragon. Instead believing that she was for some unknown reason helping them out of the goodness of her heart. Right. I’m sure everyone is going to be thrilled to try and fight another dragon.

Oh and I think Vax and Vex earned their father’s love or something.

I don’t know. He nodded at them.

I think in his mind that makes up for being a shitty father this entire time. Or is somehow the start of a better relationship. Or approval. I don’t know. I was like thank you for finally being useful. Maybe if you keep this up, you’ll deserve the children you possess. Including your current one. Who right now, you do not deserve.

She’s a little sweetheart who doesn’t care that her siblings are half-human.

Jeez.

One head nod, we’re all good now right?

I helped you with your dragon problem you stop bugging me about all those child support payments and parent-teacher things I missed?

Nope. You’re still a shit dad. Just a tad bit less shitty. Long way to go, dude.

Anyway, I wonder where we’re going from here. Because we’ve got another dragon to kill. Which should be fun because she probably wanted Thordak’s body for some nefarious reason. Most likely related to the fact that she’s dying. Maybe she’ll shove the crystal in her chest, and we’ll start this whole problem back at the beginning.

Sure, that will go well.

Then we’ve got to bring Percy back somehow.

Are we going to bring Kash back as well?

Doesn’t seem right to go get one and not the other.

I’m sure the Matron of Ravens will just love that we’re messing with her precious system. Vax will probably be tasked with returning Percy to death or something. I don’t know. It’s going to be a ride.

But I know Percy is coming back. He and Vex have to have way too many kids.

Anyway, onto the next! Thanks for reading! If you enjoy this, please consider supporting me!
