How Can We Make Spider-Man 3 Not Suck?

This trilogy could have been amazing.

Sam Raimi knocked Spider-Man 2 out of the park with the whole questioning whether or not to be Spider-Man anymore. Arguably, Spider-Man 2 is amongst one of the greatest sequels ever. Something so difficult to achieve.

Normally, sequels suck.

So often, I tend to groan at the thought of good movies making sequels.

Like imagine going to the theater and seeing the first Spider-Man movie and then the second is announced. You could worried, thinking they might ruin a good thing. Then they drop two and it’s amazing, maybe even better than the first.

So when they announce three, you’re probably psyched, unable to wait for it to come to theaters thinking to yourself how could this possibly go wrong? They’re just going to keep getting better and better if one and two are anything to go by.

Then you watch three.

And it’s utter dogshit.

And you wonder how the people who made one and two, made this steaming pile of crap? What were they thinking? Why are they rewriting things that don’t need to be rewritten? Why did we add a random love interest? Why is Peter so dumb? Why are there so many villains?

Harry and Peter are going to fight – oh wait – he hit his head and forgot everything. Oops.

Guess they’re friends again.

Also, someone noted to online that MJ cheats in every single movie. And they’re right. She does. What the hell?

What is this movie?

It’s a bunch of character loosely tied together with some string. I’d say webbing, but webbing is a whole lot stronger than whatever they’re weaving this movie together with.

And for a long time, I’ve watched this movie over and over.

I think while I am gluten for punishment, I wanted to improve upon this movie because I think it had promise.

And I’m a writer. How could I write a better story? A better movie? One I’d actually be interested in watching?

Hmm….

Well, over the years, I’ve toyed with the idea.

Tinkering here and there about what to remove or add or omit entirely. What could I do to make this movie suck less?

First things first, take out Uncle Ben’s killer rewrite.

It was unnecessary.

It added nothing to the story. Not even the rage that Peter felt to make the symbiote attach to him made it work.

It was clunky.

It was not handled well and the character as Sandman and Flint Marko aren’t given enough to work with. His backstory is a generic sob story at best and Peter already dealt with the killer and learned his lesson. We did not need a second version of it with a person we to sympathize with.

The entire storyline is useless to the movie and should be omitted entirely.

Character and all.

Save Sandman for another movie, because you’ve already got two villains, and I think both of these stories are wildly more compelling than a storyline we’ve already worked through. Peter has already been through his Uncle Ben’s killer.

But he’s never had someone truly hate Peter Parker like Eddie Brock will.

Or had his best friend hate his guts for supposedly killing his father.

Honestly, I’d keep both plots and tweak them.

Because I would like nothing more than to toy with Peter’s emotions. To make Peter vulnerable to the symbiote, we use Harry. Harry uses the same thought process as the Goblin before him. Instead, of outright attacking him, attack his heart.

I’d have Harry slowly drive wedges between Peter and MJ. Peter and Aunt May.

Be there for them when Peter rushes off.

Carefully plot little things into their minds.

Toss in that Peter’s been spending a lot of time with Gwen, his supposed lab partner.

Even keep the kiss because Peter is a moron and it works for the story. Mostly. But I’d reverse it so Peter isn’t the one to say yes, but she presses him as there’s no reason why he can’t. Right?

Otherwise, he’d have to reveal information about himself. Something he would rather not do.

Drive MJ and Peter apart.

Make MJ feel like he’s never there, which he isn’t. Use the same tactic Harry did at the end of the movie at the beginning of the movie instead.

Cultivate the symbiote taking him over slowly as he grows frustrated with the distance and his former friend. It takes him over.

They fight.

Harry is disfigured, driving them further and further apart. Peter is consumed by the symbiote as he believes MJ has left him for Harry but hasn’t. In fact, she’s done nothing but try to protect him.

But Peter’s had enough. Enough of being pushed around.

While Peter is dealing with Harry, in the background Eddie is being Eddie and still lies to get the photo to get the job he wants. When Peter’s fully engrossed in the symbiote, he reveals the truth to everyone just as the movie shows right now.

I’d even keep Peter getting angry at MJ at the diner, but I’m taking out Gwen who I do not want to play a bigger role. I want it to be even smaller.

I want Eddie to feel slighted.

To think Peter tried to steal his girl and job and made him miserable.

Peter argues with MJ and realizes he’s lost himself. Lost everything he cares about and ultimately removes the symbiote the same as before. Dropping it right on Eddie.

Who realizes now he’ll have the power to destroy Peter as he realized that he is Spider-Man.

They go toe to toe with the butler revealing the truth to Harry and making him realize all the fighting was stupid and he goes to talk to Peter only to find him desperately fighting Eddie in the middle of the city with MJ dangling precariously.

I would not kill Harry.

I liked Harry at the end of three.

I also, would like a conversation between MJ and Peter.

Peter and Harry.

I’m not sure how it all plays out, but Eddie dies the same way.

I think the movie had the makings of greatness but it all got so damn lost in tossing in characters and rehashing of things that made no sense. Let’s streamline things and get to the good stuff.

Sink our teeth into the awfulness of two friends fighting. Of life kicking you while you’re down and relationship troubles.

Because Peter’s life is never smooth sailing and that’s okay.

That’s how it goes.

But this movie was too much.

Let me know what you think! Do you like the version I’d want to see? Do you have your own thoughts on the matter? What are they? Tell me everything!
