This episode did not at all turn out how I expected it to.
And that’s a good thing.
Clearly, I watch a lot of TV. Surprises don’t happen often, but this episode was a pleasant surprise.
Like I thought the school was involved in the missing kid. But it wasn’t that at all.
Aside from not bothering to worry a little bit more about a missing kid, it’s actually not a bad place. Even the kid himself liked it there. It helped him survive.
I mean, I don’t know how many times someone will need to survive in the woods from a deranged psycho killer, hellbent on taking you out no matter what. But hey, at if you need it just once, and you have the skills to survive, that’s pretty damn good.
Sure, the school is odd.
But apparently, it seems that the adults running it do care.
Overall, I enjoyed the subversion. It wasn’t excuted well in the beginning because they were so unhelpful, but I love that one guy who nearly died helping Colter. He was totally there for those kids and that’s a nice thing.
I also loved Colter not being there to judge.
The only thing I’m really confused with in this episode is the age of the kids at that school. The kid’s girlfriend decided not to go back and appears to live alone…?
Am I getting that right? Did I miss something? Is she 18? Older? Is this high school children age?
Anyone else confused by that bit? Or is it just me?
Anyway, I loved that Reenie called Colter.
I didn’t think I was going to like her at the beginning of the series, her intro was something. I so badly wanted to reserve judgement because she’s a cast member, and I’m glad I did.
Here, she’s a fully fleshed out person.
She has friends. People she loves. And the moment she talked about being one of the first people to hold the little boy after he was born and the idea that something bad could have happened to him… I loved the emotion infused there.
This actress is amazing and I can’t wait to see how Reenie develops further, because when she’s not pissed at Colter – she seems cool. And I love her for that.
How long before she and Colter are endgame?
Come on. It’s right there.
Especially in the whole, if someone I loved was missing this is the guy you want looking for them. And the fact that he dropped everything he was doing to be there for Reenie’s friend.
Yet another example that the payday isn’t everything to Colter.
A friend called because she needed his help. Plain and simple. Past issues and annoyances aside, he’s there.
And she didn’t hesitate to call him. He was the first person she wanted looking for this kid because he’s the best.
Anger issues and relationship struggles don’t matter when someone’s life is at stake. We can stand a little awkwardness to save a kid. I love the maturity level going on there.
I appreciate that.
The storyline in the episode isn’t anything new, but it doesn’t matter.
It’s all about how Colter handles the situations, not the plots themselves.
He doesn’t choose violence. Shooting was a last resort. He tries to resolve as much as possible with words. He keeps his gun in a gun safe in his car. I love how his approach is less of violence.
He’s not above using it, but he’d rather talk people off the ledge.
I hope they lean into that further and have less action, because it’s also a nice subversion.
