12 Angry Men.
The first time I ever saw this movie, I was a junior in high school.
My business law teacher – a former lawyer – put it on for us.
At first, myself and all the other teenagers in the room, thought this was going to be the most boring movie, we’d ever seen.
Then after all the jurors were settled and they took a vote and the conflict began – the room quieted.
It was a sight to behold, 30 teenagers, entranced by this movie.
By the acting.
By the men on the screen, arguing over whether or not this 18-year-old, someone not much older than most of us, would live or die.
Guilty or not.
It was enthralling.
All the actors were.
They seemed like people, just like us. Preoccupied with their lives and uninterested in what they were doing like we were uninterested in the movie.
Only for both of us to get sucked in.
It took two classes to complete the movie.
In the third class, we discussed what ‘reasonable doubt’ and what we should know about serving on a jury.
That lesson stuck.
That movie stuck.
And someone brought it up the other day to me. My taste in movies and shows is all over the place, I like what I like, and they brought this movie up as an example.
But this movie is one I think everyone should see. It’s something I think schools should teach and people should understand. If we’re called to sit on a jury as part of our duty as people in this country, we should damn well understand the principles, and consequences.
This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.
Please, check it out!
