Superman & Lois – Closer

Season three of Superman & Lois has landed!

This show kicks off like it knows it’s got it going on!

Every storyline from the last season is touched on while pushing forward with new issues. And without further ado, let’s get into it.

Clark and Lois kick the season off with a bit of spice! Whoo!

Tyler and Bitsie’s chemistry is on full display in this episode in every way. From the sexy scenes to the tiny moments when they share a smile at their sons’ birthday bash when they embarrass them. Their little smiles at each other were so good!

The little things are what make this show so good and I think season two missed a lot of chances to show the finer moments of a couple having been together as long as Lois and Clark. They have such an easier chemistry without words to convey what they feel.

Tyler’s acting in the moment when Lois comes home with Jon and is excited to announce that she wants another baby with him is stellar! He smiled and said the right things, but both us and the audience know there was more to it.

I loved that Lois didn’t dismiss his reaction.

Couples who have been together for so long know each other.

It’s not like Kate and Lucy on NCIS: Hawai’i who are still learning the ticks and nuances of their partner’s facial expressions.

Lois knew there was more.

But she didn’t push.

The whole baby news was a shock to the system. One they weren’t expecting.

Of course, Clark who has struggled with parenting for two prior seasons is hesitant. Lois says do it again and do it even better.

For Clark, he’s still trying to get it right, now.

When this show premiered it’s clear Lois handled the boys daily. She has the whole mom/reporter thing together. She shares a bond with both boys.

Yes, I think Jon has had the short end of the stick but I also think Lois reached for him more than Clark over the course of the series. She saw Jon struggle with ‘holding the wrench’ and tried to help him.

When she lost her temper on him, she tried to amend it in the same episode.

Unlike Clark, who took an entire season to forgive his son and even than it felt brushed to the side, as they were more concerned for Jon’s safety.

Not that was wrong. Just it needed proper addressing I don’t think it was given.

For Lois, wanting another baby is simple in her mind because she’s the rockstar parent who hasn’t overly doubted herself or stepped into minefields.

Clark – on the other hand – is still grappling with his choices as a father.

Tyler did such a good job! His face made it clear in that moment, that he was thinking about all the mistakes he made and how he could inflict pain on yet another person. While at the same time, he loves his kids, and his wife. He loves the family he has made, and clearly, he would love nothing more than to jump in and say yes like he did the first time.

The whole baby storyline was cute and sweet and loving. I was so sad at the end when it was revealed she wasn’t having a baby.

So… What is going on with Lois? Is she sick? Do we get a downer storyline inside of uplifting? Will they try to have a baby since they both wanted another? How will the boys react?

Gah! I so want them to have another. I think it would be cute as heck!

Anyway, I love that Lois and Lana are still such good friends.

I was also so happy that Lana was so happy for her friends. Sometimes, characters don’t separate their misery from other people’s happiness but Lana was so good here.

She didn’t bring up Kyle or her failed marriage, she was just so excited for her friends! She loved that they were happy and potentially expanding their family. She was so happy to help Lois figure out her feelings.

The fact that their friendship is so healthy and not at all fueled by jealousy or petty competition is such a joy for me!

I was so worried when they cast Lana with marriage troubles that it would be used to come between Lois and Clark. Instead, it is the opposite.

Lana is a confidant for them.

She is a good friend to them both and is so happy her childhood friend found the love of his life.

Such a refreshing take! Not to mention, it is wonderful to see both Lana and Lois be powerful women together and helping each other rise higher. Not tear each other down.

Perfect!

I was a little surprised by the whole divorce thing.

I didn’t think Kyle would be the one to push things forward. I was actually hoping to see them try to work things out. Kyle was not my favorite character at the beginning, but he grew on me when he grew up. Seeing him lose Lana was not fun at all.

I was really rooting for those two kids to work it out.

However, I have a feeling this is to make way for Tal and Lana to get together. I wonder if there’s something to her wishing for another baby too.

Guess we’ll wait and see.

Oh, and by the way, no one editing this show was subtle with the music when Kyle and Chrissy were in the kitchen. I was like, wow, they’re going to sleep together.

Also, it gave me the creeps. Just a little.

Wonder what will happen next, because that it clearly not going to be the end of it.

As for Lana, I’m happy she and Kyle are in a good place for their kids. That is so very important. I’m really proud of them.

Then there’s her job.

What did Dean do? What was the money for? Does he think showing up uninvited to yell at their beloved mayor at the beloved Martha Kent’s son’s home was going to help him? On the twins’ birthday?

If he wanted anyone to take him seriously or to make Lana look bad, it failed. He just made himself look like a dick even if he was genuinely afraid of something.

Funnily enough, I don’t care what hole he got himself in. Lana is a bright woman, she’ll get herself and Smallville out of it. And if she needs help, she has Superman and Lois in her corner. Whatever he did, should be more afraid of them.

Okay, onto the boys.

Um, hello Jon. You look different.

I knew we were getting a new Jon, but there’s not much to say beyond that he looked different in this episode. He didn’t do much. He got his driver’s license he’s been wanting for the entire series.

His moments with the family are a bit stilted as he has to gel with them.

I hope he gets through it because I’m excited to see what’s next for Jon. He has always been a favorite of mine.

His moment in the truck with his mom was cute.

So was the one between the brothers as they realized their parents were right. Not being able to admit that to your parents is a very teenage thing to do. Here, however, they admit it and work on it together.

That little bit of growth was good. I hope the boys realize their parents aren’t setting rules and boundaries for the fun of it. They’re trying to keep them safe.

I loved that Jordan didn’t bolt after his dad. Clark told him to wait until he calls him into action and Jordan finally listened.

Jordan didn’t have the situation under control and realizing it and recognizing it and understanding it were important. Powers aren’t everything. Knowing how to use them is just as important.

Oh, and Jordan, pressuring or being weird to the girl you want to be with when she’s made her boundaries and choices clear isn’t going to help you. It’ll just make you look like an ass. Please, get your shit together.

Thank you.

I don’t miss being a teenager. Nope.

Now, for General Sam Lane.

I’m glad he’s back at the DOD. Last year was so annoying. Thank goodness that’s over.

Sam is an excellent genereal and leader for the DOD.

Do I think he’s a complete screw-up personally? Yep.

With his grandsons, his daughters, and son-in-law we’ve seen him put his foot in his mouth time and time again.

This season opener was no different. Open mouth, insert foot.

For a moment, I thought he figured it out! Then at the movies he opened his mouth about the school and made the whole hangout seem like a farce.

Poor Natalie.

I can’t even imagine how much this must suck sometimes.

Her mom and grandfather are gone. Instead, she has these identical doppelgangers in their place who have whole lives and are very different but not different who she’s not related to. But they’re kind and good people who want to be her family too, but not overstep.

It’s all hard.

It’s all complicated.

I loved John Henry giving Sam a piece of his mind.

The fact that neither Natalie nor John Henry put any pressure to be the family members they lost is so good. They remind them at every turn. But Lois and Sam show up because they’re great people. They want to know Natalie because she’s a good person too.

At least Sam was self-aware here. He apologized because he hadn’t meant to make her think it wasn’t about getting to know her. He just didn’t think about how it would look because he’s not good at the whole casual hangout thing.

Natalie giving him another chance was sweet.

She could tell he meant it.

I think that’s everything…

Whew, so much happened in this episode. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season, but I also hope they keep the balance this episode provided.

Everyone had something to do. The emotional plot was the centerpiece. Not whatever is happening with Bruno Manheim. I like that it was a thread running through the background, but it wasn’t the front runner.

Last year’s plot took over everything else.

I liked the family quality time. The episode surrounding a birthday party.

At it’s core, this show is about a super family. And that’s what I tune in for.

Oh, and who else caught the name Lex Luthor get tossed in there? Are we ready?
