NCIS: Hawai’i – Family Ties

NCIS: Hawai’i is back!

Again!

So is Kacy with more cute scenes then I can possibly handle! My goodness, they were flipping cute!

Alright, let’s get into yet another wonderful episode of this series. By all accounts, this show gets better and better. And for the first time in who knows how long I find myself enjoying watching it, every single week. There’s no drama for the sake of drama.

It feels like real people living their lives, trying to do the right thing, and make it through the day.

I freaking love this show.

It is such a joy to watch because in the end things work out.

Let’s start with my favorite part of the episode!

All the Kacy scenes! Yes, we didn’t get a kiss, but we go so much this week!

I loved that Kate willingly admitted to Tennant that she wasn’t there for work. She had merely showed up because she wanted to be comforted and get a pep talk from her girlfriend.

This was such a display of growth from Kate! I felt like a proud mama!

We went from Kate finding flimsy excuses to see Lucy to awkwardly explaining her relationship to openly and comfortably admitting it! This was amazing to watch and such excellent development from the writers to the directors to the actress herself.

I also adored that Kate didn’t even bat an eye when Tennant revealed she already knew about the CI.

I loved that Kate didn’t even care that Lucy also confided in Tennant.

They’re family and family help each other. They trust each other, they talk to each other. Kate isn’t on the outside looking in, she’s one of them. So, they’re concerned.

It was wonderful.

It was also wonderful to see Kate lean into her family when she needed them.

She was worried about losing her job. She was worried about what Curtis thought. She was worried about her CI.

And through all this, she turned to her family.

When she needed assurances and comfort she turned to her girlfriend. Lucy pumped her up. She reminded how awesome she is. She’s done amazing things in the past and this is no different. It’s just a learning curve. Lucy reminded her that she’s got this. She held her hand. She sat up with her.

But the truth was Lucy is still somewhat green too.

She can’t help her figure out how to get her CI in line.

Kate understood this and went to Tennant. Which is so damn healthy.

Your partner, girlfriend, boyfriend, person, etc, cannot be everything to you all the time. They can’t help you with everything. It’s good to have friends and other people to turn to when they’re not the right person for the job.

Yes, Lucy can kiss her and cheer her up. She can be her cheerleader, but she can’t offer the advice she needed to fix the situation.

She needed Tennant.

So, Kate asked for help.

A major point in her growth. Tennant promised to have her back. To be her family. So, when Kate shows up and asked for help. Tennant is there.

She doesn’t make fun.

She doesn’t belittle or try to take over the situation.

She advises.

She tells Kate what she’s learned in her years. She offers a different view. She tells her the world isn’t as black and white as Kate sometimes views it.

Which I loved!

I love Curtis. Don’t get me wrong. He seems like a good guy overall.

But I do think Tennant is better boss than him. Tennant didn’t step in and hold Kate’s hand. She didn’t go to Curtis or Kenny and try to fix it to protect her.

She taught her something.

Curtis stepping in like that will never teach Kate anything. Except that he doesn’t trust her. In that situation, I would prefer him to be more like Tennant. Offer advice, guide his somewhat green agent. Taking over and meeting with the CI caused more problems than it solved.

Including damaging his relationship with Kate.

Kate no longer felt comfortable asking him for advice when she was uncertain. She went to Tennant.

Which is what makes Tennant so badass.

But more on that in a moment.

Kate was awesome in this episode. Truly. Her confronting Curtis, wanting to know why he’s suddenly second-guessing her.

Coming to Lucy for comfort.

Tennant for advice.

And figuring out how to get through to Kenny her way. She appealed to him. She was calm and it was the most Kate-like thing she did in the entire episode. Her confidence returned and she was the badass, we know she can be.

Her smirk in the van was cute.

Kenny smiling at her.

The whole thing was really well done. And not at all what I was expecting when I saw Kate struggling with a CI. I didn’t expect the depth and the care put into the storyline by everyone.

I once saw someone say that they LGBTQ characters often feel like they’re on an entirely separate show. Their problems and relationships are often divided from the rest of the show.

But NCIS: Hawai’i has done a truly spectacular job making everything feel cohesive as it ought to be.

Kate and Lucy are fully part of the plot, the show, and the family at the heart of this show.

To me, this episode proves they didn’t add in characters like Lucy and Kate to tick a box for diversity. They added them to show real people. To demonstrate those people exist and have lives like anyone else. And they are treated like anyone else on the show.

They’re treated like Kensi and Deeks from it’s sister show.

They are central. They are important. Their storylines do not revolve around just them as a couple being two women. But as a couple facing problems at work, problems at home, with friends, with life.

It’s everything I could want.

Now, as for Tennant being a badass!

In these last couple of episodes, Tennant’s good heart is on display like no body’s business!

She helped a family stay together by giving them the right words to say to secure their freedom. In this latest episode, she helps a kid get a new future.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – Tennant is undeniably the soul of this show.

She is also a kind woman who wants to help people.

She’s not just here to enforce the rules. She cares about the people around her. The people in her care. The people she goes after.

She’d rather talk someone down than use a gun. Tennant wants to make the world a better place.

She saw a chance to make this kid’s life better. To encourage him to use his talents for good, instead of escalating and getting into worse trouble. Or hurting someone.

Tennant saw a kid angry at the world, but with a good heart.

He may have been looking for a fight, but he was picking fights that deserve to be fought. Trying to help animals. Climate change. He wasn’t going to bar and starting a fight.

He was trying to do something good too.

Tennant saw who this kid was under his foolish acts, like she saw the good in the mother (formerly a spy) and helped.

There’s a quote out there somewhere, that goes something like – you have to decide whether people are more than the sum of one mistake.

Tennant embodies that.

She sees people as a whole.

She sees cases as a whole.

She is by far one of my favorites on this show. I love Kate and Lucy, but I love seeing a badass woman with power use it to help those who truly need it. She is respected. She is powerful. And she is wise and kind. It’s a hell of thing to watch.

It’s even better to see it celebrated.

I loved her reaction to Kate coming to see her.

You could see how proud she was that Kate sought her out. How happy she was, that she’s finally convinced Kate she’s family, and she’ll be there.

NCIS: Hawai’i is such an amazing show. I’m truly so excited it’s coming back for another season and I can’t wait for the rest of this one.

Thank goodness there wasn’t another break between episodes, this time. I may have flipped.

One last thing, anyone else want to know what happened to that puppy?

What happened to the puppy?

OH!

And Alex is going into the Navy! I feel like Tennant looked at the end, proud and nervous! Like I’m so happy he knows what he wants and he’s going for it. At the same time, AHH! He’s going into the Navy! He’s too sweet! He’s just a baby! NO!

Tennant lock him in his room.

But also, like I’m so proud that he wants in some ways to be like his mom and make a difference and serve his country. Those are such admirable qualities. He’s just like his mom and I hope since he’s joining the Navy we still get to see him around as this is a naval show.

Whew.

Oh, and one more thing. How the heck did that kid get all those tires off without making any noise?

I recently had to take my tire off my car to get my alternator belt changed. The lug nut wouldn’t budge and it took two days to complete the task. That was one tire! (I was also using an air compressor, which makes noise.)

HOW?! Kid tell me your secret! Fighting with the tires on my car is so annoying!

Okay, now that I got that off my chest. Thank you for reading! Let me know what you thought about the latest NCIS: Hawai’i episode!
