Alert – Andy

What is happening?!

No. I’m serious.

I will completely admit that following the letter of the law doesn’t always mean you’re doing the right thing. History is filled with instances where breaking the law was better than following it. Everyone who harbored Jews, or helped gay people.

They broke the law for the better.

Did that happen in the latest episode of Alert?

I’m seriously asking. I’m not making a joke or being light-hearted. I have no idea what to think about the choice Nikki made by not including everything they knew in the report.

In the last three episodes I’ve rooted for Nikki because she chooses to do the right thing and treat people properly, no matter what. She is a good cop. She follows the law and treats people with respect.

However, would the law have protected this little boy?

But should he be allowed to go with a woman who kidnapped him?

Maybe he truly is better off, maybe she’ll never do it again. But the point is, is that up to Nikki to decide? Is it up to Jay?

Mike said there are more qualified people whose job it is to decide those things.

Are there?

The foster system is littered with children who are mistreated and have had horrible childhoods. Not that there aren’t positives and I’m sure people have had good experiences. But the nurse explicitly pointed out that she tried the right way over and over.

No one did anything.

No one did the right thing. So she did the wrong thing for the right reasons.

Honestly, this is a no win situation.

But the thing that truly bothers me is the perpetuating the idea that police can do whatever they want under the guise of the ‘right thing.’ Nikki made a choice that wasn’t hers to make.

Not today.

Not tomorrow.

Not on TV.

Not in the climate of unrest we have with the police.

Because they don’t need any more affirmations on the TV telling them it’s okay to take the law into their own hands.

Because it’s not. Plain and simple.

As awful as it may sound, now more than ever the police – even on TV – have to follow the rules. I wrote another article on a police show from the late 60s early 70s called Adam-12.

It was a great police show because they followed the rules, even when it was hard. They would go to the DA and advocate on behalf of someone if they thought it was the right thing to do. But they still allowed everyone to do their jobs.

They trusted the DA and the world around them to try and be as fair as possible. And if wasn’t, they set out to fix it or help any way they could. Within the law, because they’re not above it.

Was it totally perfect?

No.

Was it better and exactly how police should act?

YES.

I have to say this episode left a sour taste in my mouth.

On the other hand, I loved the respect afforded to Kemi.

Nikki trusted her daughter to while not taking away her daughter’s agency by letting her choose to follow the ceremony or not. Even though Jay was an ass, he did what he was asked. He painted the candles, he brought the eggs, and melted candles to Sydney. He told her what she needed to do.

They respected her even though her beliefs might different. Not to mention, the reverse.

Kemi asked permission to help Sydney. She took Nikki’s blessing and then went to Sydney for permission. For a show that isn’t understanding not letting the police run wild, they’re getting this right.

Sidenote – I do not if Kemi is based on any religion or if they’re making it up. To me, it doesn’t matter because the characters treat her with respect anyway.

Except Jay, who as I said, is an ass.

Goodbye June…?

She was a very one note character so I’m not surprised she’s gone.

I completely understand Mike. Things do not look good for them.

Totally called the switching of the hair, because I firmly do not think that’s Keith.

Lastly, Sydney – what the hell happened?

She clearly believes she has some idea what happened to Keith and it appears he drowned. So, what happened that night Sydney? And why were you so scared that you didn’t tell your parents?

And if Keith is dead, who is living in the house?

If it is Keith, what does he want?

So many questions. So little answers.

Anyway, let me know what you think. Do you agree with Nikki?
