Hi, I’m Ashley and I’m late to the party. I know. Thank you.
I finally managed to sit down and watch Wonder Woman.
Oh man, did I wish I watched it sooner! I will be the first to admit I am not the biggest fan of the DC Universe. Man Of Steel and Batman V. Superman are not my favorite movies.
There are far too many character flaws in both Superman and Batman themselves for me to really get in it. That’s another review altogether.
Moving on to this movie. I will also admit Wonder Woman herself has never been a particular favorite hero or character of mine. Too often I have been given the impression that for her to be a strong female hero she must hate men, be emotionless, and very rigid. Almost unfeeling. She has never been a character I could relate to when described to me before, therefore I avoided her comics, shows, and movies.
I was initially rather reluctant to check this movie out. Lately, the hype for a movie with a female lead goes one of two ways it seems. Either it’s the best thing in the world until it’s not. Or it’s the worst thing in the world and everyone hates it. I feel like there is never in between.
With all the hype surrounding this movie I feared it wouldn’t be as progressive or women forward because people tend to thrive on anything when deprived of it in the past. I feared this movie wouldn’t live up.
This movie completely blew my expectations out of the water. It was amazing!
Gal Gadot was perfect in this role. She balanced the naïve perfectly. She never made Diana feel too child like for the outside world. The movie itself never dove too far that it made her seem ridiculous.
In fact, it did the opposite. Diana’s fresh outlook on the world was refreshing in a doom and gloom place. She held a certain set of ideals and believes the world should follow suit. Everyone is equal. Women and men are equal. There should be no wars. No hatred for their fellow man. What’s the point of it? We’re all people.
I loved that her convictions never wavered. Even in the face of Ares she never let herself slip or doubt herself. Maybe she believes mankind is unworthy of her help but she strives for the day they are worthy. She wants mankind to have it’s chance to prove they are more then senseless wars and deaths. Diana fights for the day people live in peace.
Diana fights for mankind’s chance to be better. To join her.
It’s a different message. Other heroes tend to fall into line of already worthy, just have to find it, or prove it.
Diana’s more like, nope, you people are a mess. Let me help you clean this crap up and fix your broken ideals.
The world Diana found herself in was neck deep in the belief women have no place outside the home. No place to speak or be heard. I loved that she asserted her right to be heard without making herself laughable. There is always a point of no return in things like this, where you’ll go too far to be heard, and become noise.
Diana finds those points easily. She often opts for action instead of words to prove herself.
She walks into ‘No man’s land’ and finally gains ground. The men follow because, damn, we hadn’t been able to do that! Let’s go!
The little group Diana and Steve form up follow her as she proves herself to be a worthy warrior. They stop seeing her as a woman but as a fellow soldier desperately trying to stop the horrible war raging around the world.
She earns their respect.
I suppose it’s what I like most about this movie. There are a lot of times people scream to be heard because they believe they’re not because they’re a woman or what have you. But they have nothing of value to say or they can’t back it up with anything.
I loved this version of Diana because she wanted to save the village of people. So she did. She wanted to stop Ares. So she did.
She put herself in danger. At no point did she ever ask anything of anyone she wasn’t willing to do herself. Same with Steve.
Steve took on what he believed to be a suicide mission. The Lasso of Truth proved it. He asked a group to follow him, no money, no back up, and very little chance of return because it would end the war. Wasn’t that worth their lives?
He fought tooth and nail at every turn. He was inspired by Diana’s bravery despite his annoyance that one person or thing could be behind all the world’s hatred.
Diana and Steve had very different outlooks on the world but they came together to do something amazing.
The two of them had a strange relationship throughout the entire movie as they each tried very hard to understand the other and mesh their different outlooks on the world. Steve was frustrated with Diana’s lack of understanding when it came to the world. Diana was frustrated with Steve’s… everything. She disliked his ability to lie. She respected his ability to do what’s needed. But annoyed with his cynical and unbelieving outlook on life.
At the end of the day, they worked. Despite it all. They made a good team.
Unfortunately, it was all cut short when Steve sacrificed himself breaking Diana’s heart in the process, but inspiring her to win her fight against Ares.
At the same time, Diana found the strength to fight off Ares she also found something else too. Just how cruel the world can be.
Yes, Diana lost her Aunt earlier in the movie. I’m not downplaying the tragedy there. But it is a tragedy Diana always knew possible for a general. Not to mention, we expect to outlive family members.
No one expects to lose a romantic love before they truly have a chance to have a relationship.
Not only that, but she lost them within a few days or maybe even a week of each other. Two cruel deaths so close taught Diana just how cruel the world can be. Coupled with never being able to return home to see her family seemed to make Diana a little colder.
More like the one we saw in Batman V. Superman. The one who had closed herself off to the possibility of helping the world because she’d lost sight of all the good in it after all this time. Without a piece of the happiness the world has to offer whether her family or Steve or her friends who have long since passed she lost a part of her fight after all these years.
Can you imagine? After the war when everyone is celebrating? Returning to their families? When her friends return to their homes?
She can’t. She can’t go home. Steve is gone. What was she left with all this time?
No one.
I hope her newfound friends in the Justice League will be a comfort to her.
Anyway, those are my thoughts on Wonder Woman. Let me know what you think!
Read on and spread the love!
