Invincible: Here Goes Nothing – Review

I’m reading over my notes for this episode and thinking – damn, that was a wild ride.

They’re all over the place.

Regardless of my notes, I’m going to start with the thing I enjoyed most out of this episode – Eve.

Seriously, she was an addition I didn’t know the show needed until she arrived to save Mark’s butt in the middle of the invasion. Then she’s the chillest person in the entire series.

“Do you want to talk about yesterday? You look like you need to talk about yesterday.”

Doesn’t even hesitate to be there for Mark even though they just met. Helps him deal with the feeling of seeing people die right in front of him. The reality of being out there in real time, seeing all the destruction and death firsthand.

She’s not too proud to admit she struggled once too. That she used to vomit like a firehose before she finally got used to it.

She doesn’t make him feel bad for any of it.

Just chills with him on the roof and talks it out with him. Jokes with him. Teases him.

And there’s an immediate connection there. You know?

Like… did he just meet his Lois Lane? Or Mary Jane?

Is that what we just witnessed? I don’t know. But I’m excited to find out.

Also, this might have been the most disappointed I’ve ever been to discover that she has a boyfriend. I was like damn it. Come on! We had an immediate connection there!

She gets him! He gets her! Like – they just fit! You know?

I – for sure – thought it was going to be Amber that he would end up with given that he tried to help her out. And it does appear that she’s interested in him. However, Mark seems to have absolutely no clue. Since the moment she starts talking to him, he runs off, and she sees him leave with Eve to meet Teen Team.

What a name.

Like Robot. We just gave up on naming things that day. Apparently.

I did think it would be Amber. But then I was like, oh Eve is a way better match. The chemistry is fire. How could I not root for that?

Then she kissed Rex.

Side note, someone on the production please work on the kissing noises. Just. Please.

And I actually shouted out loud, “Oh come on!”

This show was doing a great job subverting typical problems for like two minutes. He just straight up told Eve his secret. They chatted and were immediately just so good together. Bouncing off each other like they’ve known each other for years instead of a day.

He’s clearly smitten with her.

Which I cannot blame him.

Then she kisses Rex who appears by all rights to be a complete asshole. For example, getting jealous when they come from the same place because they were at school together.

Um… Yes, it is a likely story. Because it’s true. Nothing happened here you freaking weirdo.

Even Mark who appeared to have a crush on her, did his best to get over it when he discovered she was with someone. Even insisting to his friend that he wasn’t going to chase a girl who already had a boyfriend. I really appreciated the look into Mark’s brain.

He even seemed confused by Rex.

Like dude, the minute I knew she had a boyfriend, I was like nope. Off limits. Got it. Moving on.

Nothing Eve has done has indicated that she was going to leave Rex for Mark or be unfaithful. His jealousy felt so out of left field. But he most definitely did not help his case for keeping Eve when he acted like an ass to Mark for no reason.

Like, yes, he froze. But it’s like day two for him. Cut him some slack.

At least he tried. That’s better than most people.

I’m really rooting for Eve and Mark. Though I suspect because she’s got Rex, it’s going to be Amber he ends up with.

Which leads me to William who is a good friend. Mostly. He’s a little questionable on going after a woman who is taken and offering up his friend’s number without his consent. However, his heart is in the right place.

Love that.

As for everything else that happened.

It appears that no one else has any idea that Omni-Man is actually responsible. I mean, Cecil might suspect, but he’s keeping that shit close to his chest. Which if he does suspect, I cannot blame him since Omni-Man took on the Guardians of the Globe and beat them.

Which – in universe – is a huge deal.

Debbie seems completely clueless that her husband is a villain. Unless, she knew his version of asking nicely was to destroy the entire planet to make a point.

Ask nicely, my ass.

Her attitude about him ending up on another planet about it just being Tuesday was incredible. Totally felt like Lois Lane in Superman and Lois. Eh, he’s got this. I was only worried before because nothing like that had ever happened. But this? This I’ve been through a bunch of times.

He’s good.

Love that.

I really love the mom. Her true colors shined through in this episode. She loves her husband. Her son. And will always be there for them, no matter what.

Whether he’s in a hospital bed or her son is covered in blood. Debbie will be there for them. Will always be an ear for her son and I think that’s really sweet.

It also reminds me of Superman and Lois – in a good way – that the non-superpowered members of the family stick together. Sure, Mark has his powers now. But that doesn’t erase 17 years of them being the non-powered ones in the family and the bond that came with that.

Much like Lois and Jon in the show.

I adore that.

What I find really strange about this episode is how normal Nolan opts to be. After everything is said and done, he’s just returned to his life like nothing happened. Why did he murder them then? Why now? What is he up to now?

There has to be a reason. Right?

Except, why wouldn’t he carry on or something? Take over the world? Why carry on pretending that he’s a great superhero? Did he discover something about the Guardians? I’d ask if they knew something about him, but they seemed really shocked by his murder streak.

What is going on?!

So many questions.

Overall, I enjoyed this episode. I loved how Mark is slowly coming along with his powers. Managed to land without wrecking the world at least once. Tried to do the right thing by the world.

Except, when his father shows up and easily takes them all down, it really drives home how far Mark has left to go.

He also probably should have thought it through a bit more before shouting after his father and outing himself as Omni-Man’s son. Not sure if they wanted everyone to know that yet.

His freak out over Eve was adorable.

The never-ending attempts by the invaders was freaking hilarious. Along with Robot claiming they used their time wisely. On the other hand, did not care for Robot suggesting we just nuke a city to get rid of them. I did enjoy that everyone else vetoed that plan, because what is wrong with you robot?

The Collation of Planets dude coming to the wrong planet thing was hilarious. Especially as he and Mark fought it out, only for Mark to accidentally use his time-out.

Why do I get a time-out? Well, that’s a good freaking question, Mark. Then we sit on the moon and have a perfectly civil conversation to realize this is not the planet he was supposed to be visiting. Which means two things as well.

There’s a planet out there who signed up for this test and has never been tested. They probably want a word with someone and maybe their money back if this is a service they pay for.

Second, Omni-Man just kicked his butt and never actually spoke to him like Mark did. Which illustrates how different they are. I think that’s going to be an interesting speedbump somewhere along the way.

My favorite line of the episode though is when Mark asks why he can hear the alien in his head.

“Where else do you keep your brain?” Everything about that made me laugh so hard, I had to pause the episode because I couldn’t register anything else.

This episode is a marked improvement from the first and I can completely see, if it keeps up with this pace and writing, why it’s held in such high regard. I’m looking forward to the next episode!
