Alright, I’m cutting this close and it might not even still be Valentine’s Day somewhere out there. But who cares? I’ve been working on this for a couple days now so my work is going to be put to use.
In honor of Valentine’s Day I have composed a list of my favorite onscreen or in a book couples!
There’s 15 of them! Here we go! And yes, this is how I spend my romantic day of the year. I don’t pry into your life.
15. Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase.
I’ll admit I’ve read Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson adventures more times then I can count. Percy and Annabeth are not only my favorite characters but my favorite couple in the series. I liked the fact they went from friends to a couple and struggled with their feelings. They always felt very relatable as they struggled to grapple with not only their feelings for each other but the idea their crush could like someone else. Plus I’ve got a thing for the couple that loves to go down fighting together. Which they always do.
14. Waverly Earp and Nicole Haught
These two have definitely had a few bumps in the road and the show hasn’t even aired season three yet! From an annoying ex-boyfriend to crazy sisters to possession to lying. I think they’ve hit quite a few milestones already. However, I love these two together despite all their ups and downs because they don’t call it quits at the first sign of trouble. Sure, they argue. But they work it out too. I think they need more communication in their relationship but I don’t think it’s reached an unhealthy level either. There’s still a lot of work to go for them but I know they care enough about each other to fight for their relationship.
13. Westley and Buttercup
These two crazy kids! My parents have been watching this movie for so long they could recite the whole thing. It’s my feel good, feel bad, and everything in between movie. I’ve watched these two fall in love countless times since I was little and it never gets boring. Sure, they lack a deeper character meaning we seem to endlessly crave today but that’s what I love. They are two people who fell in love and despite all odds made it. It’s a kind of love you hope to find. It’s a fairytale where it ends Happily Ever After. What more do I need?
12. Lorelai Gilmore and Luke Danes

Another childhood favorite. I used to watch reruns on ABC Family everyday when I was little. Luke and Lorelai had their up and downs over the years especially in communicating but they loved each other. They tried to be there for each other. Despite the strange idea they lived in a weird limbo until the revival which I don’t agree with I love them. No couple will ever be perfect. No person is ever perfect. The hope is to find someone who loves you, flaws and all. These two hit the marker on that note. I concur with Lorelai. They found someone cool to hang out with until they drop dead!
11. Paul and Jamie Bachman.
Who says you can’t make a TV show interesting without breaking a couple up and putting them back together? Mad About You is my favorite way to debunk that little theory. This show survived seven years with a married couple at the helm. Paul and Jamie’s relationship is two people with a million flaws each, who love each other, and want to be together until they die. This couple was very flawed and didn’t always work. It nearly broke in season four as they drifted apart. But what I loved was the aftermath of the drifting. They realized they needed help. They needed to work on some things in order to remain together. So they did. Because they love each other and didn’t want to live in a world without their partner.
10. Piper Halliwell and Leo Wyatt.
This couple went through hell and back together over and over. They fought rules trying to keep them apart. They fought the end of the world several times over to stay together. Piper and Leo are a favorite of mine because again, they are flawed together and apart. They had ups and downs. Good and bad days but ultimately their desire to be together helped keep them together. I can’t imagine ever one without the other.
9. Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence.
Here’s a classic example of breaking up and getting back together over and over and over, complete with history rewrites whenever needed! Nah. Cory and Topanga make the list because they were one of the most entertainingly weirdest working couples I have ever seen. These two nuts have known it was each other – depending on which history you believe – from the word go. They always felt inevitable. No matter what roadblock or other love interest was tossed it, it was always Cory and Topanga. Every character on the show knew it and so did the audience. In their own weird way they made you believe a couple of kids could make it last forever.
8. Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and Astrid Hofferson.
No. I do not care this is a cartoon. I love these two. Despite their early interactions where Astrid disliked his sudden rise to stardom in the Dragon Killing Arena these two make a great couple. They make an excellent team as Dragon Riders in their TV show which illustrates how well the two of them communicate with each other. In the second movie Hiccup tells her he doesn’t want to be Chief. They listen to each other and strive to help one another in anyway they can. They have a great give and take relationship. They don’t belittle each other or put each other down. In fact, they are often there to boost the other when needed. I love their protectiveness of each other without needing to put someone in a bubble and shelter them. They are equals and treat each other as such.
7. Jonathan and Martha Kent.

Here’s where this gets a little tricky! I’m actually talking about two different versions on TV. First there’s the Smallville couple and then there’s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Both versions clearly love each other very much but what puts them here on my list is the successful long term marriage they have. Jonathan of both series often seems to wonder why Martha would choose a simple farmer since she’s from the big city. And Martha often reminds him she loves nothing more then her simple farmer. I loved these two.

They had disagreements and didn’t always see eye to eye but on Smallville we often saw them discuss them. When they needed to discipline or talk to Clark they presented a united front. Jonathan never hesitated to throw himself into danger if it meant protecting his family. And I always loved how much Martha took being a Kent to heart. They always seemed to be a long lasting healthy couple who stood by each other when times were hardest. Like not being able to have a baby of their own.
6. Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

Again, there are two couple from the same set of shows! On Smallville Lois and Clark did not like each other to start with. Their friendship evolved slowly over the course of time until they fell in love. This is one of my favorite things about Smallville was taking these two from such a bad place to an amazing one. They know all of each other’s flaws, all the things they were afraid to share with previous partners because they were best friends. I love the friends to lovers thing because your friends tend to know you well. If after being friends for five years you can love that person even more it’s going to last.

As for Lois & Clark The New Adventures of Superman’s Lois and Clark they had a bit different beginning. They were stuck with each other as partners working for the Daily Planet that evolved faster into friends and then lovers. Also built on a friendship that became romantic about a year later though. I loved this particular version because they were the stars they had to work through issues often. They dealt with fears, lies, and vengeful exes. They had good communication with each other and worked as a team. By the end of the show they felt like one person with how effortless it was for them to be together. Lois and Clark. Never one without the other.
5. Iris West-Allen and Barry Allen.
Barry and Iris. Is there another couple on TV right now more suited to each other then these two? I can just feel people yelling at me. As much as people declare Iris is useless to the show because she’s not a hero watch Lois & Clark. It isn’t about saving the day, it’s about being Barry’s partner. He needs someone who loves him inside and out. Flash and all. Iris knows him better then anyone. A fact she proved by figuring out his secret based on a shock. These two have seen the ups and downs. Have lived it all together and then some. Iris is Barry’s home, his everything. A safe space he can run to. Barry is Iris’ best friend, her home, her safe space, her hero, and everything in between. They make each other better, stronger, and together they’ll go far. I’m so glad they finally got their marriage. Interruption not withstanding.
4. Peter and Elizabeth Burke.

These two were so in love with each other, they literally had their own language. From codes about safety to saying I love you to I know how to help you identify kidnappers! They had been married for a decade when the show opens and it showed. They had a rock solid marriage where jealousy and arguments just didn’t happen. One of their biggest fights was about not picking up the dry cleaning. She helped him with his cases, even flirt to get intel, and remind him he’s a catch. She knows, she married him. Peter was not the most emotional man but he was never afraid to remind anyone and everyone how much he loved his wife. He planned a second marriage ceremony, just them, because she disliked how much of a production the first became. She knows him so well, his body language, face, and tones told her everything he didn’t say. He tried to be the best husband he could be. He didn’t always remember and beat himself up about it more then she did. These two are so wonderful to me because I just want a marriage like this. They amount of trust these two have was amazing. They didn’t do drama. Plain and simple. They had a problem, they worked it out. With Peter’s job life was short so they always said they loved each other. And they do.
3. Han Solo and Leia Organa.

I will never not be upset over Han’s death or the fact they were not together in the new movies. That’s a big thing for me. After all these two went through to admit their feelings for each other and manage to keep each other alive I think they deserved some freaking happiness together! It was nice to know they had a son together and that it wasn’t ‘all bad.’ But it still stunk. As someone who grew up watching Star Wars it was not fun to find out they were separated. However, they make my list anyway because I like living in denial. Han and Leia were an interesting match of two very headstrong and stubborn people. They made a good pair when fighting alongside each other. Not to mention they each just knew how to push the others buttons. Maybe they weren’t the healthiest couple but seriously, I don’t think anyone else in the world could be a better match for either of them. Not even a wookie!
2. Carmilla Karnstein and Laura Hollis.
For everyone out there saying “who?” Watch the Carmilla series on YouTube. You will not be sorry. Laura Hollis and Carmilla Karnstein are a pair you will love to watch again and again. This little webseries that could even had a movie! Also, you’ll wonder how the two leading ladies aren’t actually dating because their chemistry is electrifying! As for this couple, not only is it positive representation for the LBGT community, it’s not even about that! Can you imagine? This is not a coming out story! This is a college girl who’s roommate goes missing and is replaced with a vampire who has been sent to make her the next target. Unfortunately for the big bad these two fall in love and wreck everything. Laura and Carmilla could not be more opposite if they tried. Laura is a tense ball of gay energy who feels the need to help anyone all the time regardless of her own safety. Carmilla is the lazy gay who can’t be bothered to help anyone ever and prioritizes her safety along with those she cares for above everything else. Once they fall in love with each other their first relationship attempt is a perfect example of what not to do to your partner and is a valuable lesson both women take to heart. During which they have terrible communication. Laura often insists Carmilla do things she doesn’t agree with in an attempt to ‘change’ her. Laura does this without realizing how much she’s straining Carmilla to be what she wants and reconcile with herself. Carmilla bottles everything up inside and won’t share her feelings with Laura until enough is enough and she breaks it off. The two slowly reconcile becoming good friends who try over the rest of the series to improve their communication. These two are not perfect and even in the movie set five years later they still have problems but clearly they’ve discovered the secret to keeping anything from getting out of hand! They share it with their partner! Carmilla and Laura discuss problems, feelings, hopes, dreams, and fears in the movie. They are what every couple should strive for, not perfect but trying everyday to make each other better. By the end of the movie each of them is ready in a new way to move forward not only together but as individuals garnered from strength that they can face anything together.
1. Emma Swan and Killian Jones.
Yep. These two are number one for me! I can hear more people shouting off in the distance! Sorry. I have watched and rooted for these two since early season three when I started watching the show live after a binge watching the first two seasons on Netflix. After their slow burn relationship through season three I was hooked. [Pun not intended.] This is not a couple without faults. But that’s not the point. I love how much better they made each other. Without realizing it Emma sparked hope and a desire to be a better man. I also loved how Killian spent a good chunk of the show believing he did not deserve this woman, he never took her for granted. Killian managed something only Emma’s son Henry ever managed bringing down her walls. Reminding her that not everyone will leave her. That if it’s the right person they will cherish the trust and faith she’s putting in them. Something Killian has always done is cherish every moment he has with Emma Swan. He fought for her. Tooth, nail, hook, and he won her heart. She fought for him because she realized in her own feelings he was it and he wouldn’t leave. Sure, there were a lot of bumps, more lies then I ever thought were needed for the story. They were good for each other and made each other better people. I think that is as important as anything in a relationship, being with people who make you want to be the best version of yourself. Emma and Killian did that for each other. Now, if they could just never lie again that would be so helpful!
Whew, that was long! Those are my favorite couples in order from least to most. To help you understand why I picked these couples and are arranged in this order I want to explain.
I don’t always love the healthiest couple. It’s TV. It’s fake. And don’t give me any arguments about proper representation on TV because this is what kids watch and it effects their thinking. My parents taught me TV and movies are fake, they are things to be entertaining. I love The Italian Job a movie about a bunch of criminals who you’re supposed to root for stealing gold bricks. Do I really root for the thieves in real life? No. It’s a movie. I take it for what it is. So should everybody else. It’s a parents job to educate their kids and teach them what’s healthy. Not the TV shows, there’s is to make money, and get people watching.
Sorry, I get very passionate about this stuff.
Anyway, I love couples who are relatable, entertaining, and who fit each other in the world they’re in. Each show has it’s own set of rules so I tend to pick couples based on how well they fit into that shows mold. If a couple has a healthy relationship all the better because it’s nice to see outside the norms of TV. I also picked based a nostalgia for me. Some of these I grew up watching and have loved since I was a kid. Others are ones I’ve recently come across.
For example Waverly and Nicole would be higher if they had managed to work out all their problems from season two but since they still feel a little unbalanced it didn’t feel right to me.
Marriage hosts a factor. A lot of these couples are married. However, I like a successful marriage too but I also go for those I believe will have a good marriage like Barry and Iris. But note I do like Oliver and Felicity but I left them off the list because of the season four debacle which never quite felt resolved to me. Also Mon-el and Kara were left off this list as well because I have no idea what that semi-disaster of a relationship was last year. It’s not my favorite couple. Also, since they are no longer together that disqualifies them.
I know a lot of people out there would like to argue some points I made or couples I’ve chosen so if anyone would like to have a discussion you’re more then welcome! Just don’t be rude is all I ask!
