Percy Jackson: Nobody Gets the Fleece – Review

Oh look, Percy’s already trading the fate of the world for Annabeth.

What’s going to happen when they’re actually together? Damn.

I truly loved the title of this chapter of the book and now this episode. It’s such a fun play on words and Rick Riordan is just so masterful with that. Like all of his prophecies are just so well written and done.

As a writer, I’ve always wanted to pick his brain about how he comes up with them.

Anyway!

Percy’s willingness to trade the fleece for Annabeth’s life should come as a shock to no one, except apparently Clarisse. Which – honestly – makes perfect sense.

Percy is the son of the sea god. It’s often referenced in the book and even a bit in the show that the sea does not like to be tamed. Which is very much how Percy behaves.

He’s steadfast in his refusal to submit to something he does not believe in. Or do something simply because it makes the most logical sense. He’s guided by waves and fierce emotions. He’s very much like his father and the ocean.

Meanwhile, we have Clarisse who is the daughter of war. Practical, tactical, and efficient. Aside from the prophecy rattling her, she is thinking rather logically about the fleece. They need it to save camp. Sacrificing one person for the greater good of all the demigods is worth it to her.

They’re at war. War means casualties. People will die.

They cannot give up or hand things to the enemy every time they do.

Both choices are heavily based on their personalities and fit them perfectly. I love the clash. I love that Percy makes the choice he does and that Clarisse makes hers.

She wants to succeed. Be a hero. Have honor.

Percy is standing the way of that because he’s feeling mushy about Annabeth. So much so, he’s willing to work a person he hates to save her life.

This was so well done by everyone.

As for something that didn’t quite fit, I didn’t understand the change of Annabeth pretending to be Nobody to her pretending Nobody sent her. It was just sort of odd and out of place.

But I suppose they attempted to make the Cyclops more intelligent than he was. Because he certainly feels smarter than he was in the book. Maybe that’s just me.

Regardless, Annabeth is gravely injured by the Cyclops while Percy is trapped and helpless to save her.

Tyson appears to try and help, siding with Percy as his true brother. Thus, leading to them falling off a cliff together, shocking and scaring Percy.

I really do love that Walker has managed to convey the annoyance and love he feels for Tyson that was in the book. Percy was annoyed about having to protect and be there for Tyson in school and then at camp. He felt like his father was mocking him by claiming Tyson in front of the whole camp, a thing not normally done.

He’s embarrassed by Tyson from time to time and uncomfortable. But underneath it all, he does care for him, but he feels so conflicted that he’s not sure what to do with all his emotions.

That’s a lot for any 13-year-old to handle.

Regardless, in the show and the book, this moment captures Percy not caring about anything else. He loves Tyson. He’s his brother and he realizes that he hasn’t exactly been a very good one. Yet for whatever reason, Tyson still chose him to defend.

Switching to Percy’s undying return loyalty to Tyson. Because once he decides you’re family or a friend – he’s loyal to a fault.

Every time.

Tyson does manage to get the upper hand, and Percy is so relieved to have him back.

I love this moment as Percy finally accepts Tyson fully. Walker did an amazing job conveying it without the words the book had. Love it.

Other things I enjoyed about this episode – Percy and Annabeth disguised as sheep and bahing along with them. Sneaking up to the tree while still cloaked in sheep fur.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Clarisse yelling at Percy.

Grover trying to referee.

Tyson declaring that Percy is his brother.

Percy’s horrible nightmare that indicates something terrible is going to happen involving the Big House and lightning. Gee, I wonder who the figure is.

Him waking from his nightmare and wanting to go right now, while Annabeth tells him that’s a bad idea. They need to sleep. They’ve made a plan and they’re sticking to it.

Once again, demonstrating how well they work together.

They devised a plan together. Percy wanted to alter the timeline, but Annabeth pointed out why it was a bad idea. Percy accepted the facts of the situation and returned to sleep.

I truly love how much respect he has for Annabeth.

He knows he can disagree with her, but he’s never an ass about it or cocky. He simply states his piece and lets her explain her thoughts and come to an agreement.

You know, like how healthy relationships ought to work.

All in all, I liked this episode very much and I’m excited to see how the rest of it unfolds. Onto the next!
