My Adventures with Superman: Into the New World – Review

Fun fact!

I thought I watched season two. I did not. Therefore, I only know half of what’s going on.

Supergirl came to Earth poised to take over with other Kryptonians. I think. But she chose the power of goodness and now she’s on our side.

I will watch the rest of season two later so that I’m fully up to date. However, in the meantime, I’ve watched this episode and I want to talk about it!

This entire episode could probably be summed up with Clark just wants to celebrate Halloween with his friends, but they have other plans.

I’m not sure why Sam Lane thought telling his daughter anything would lead to only Superman investigating it. Clearly, he knows nothing about his daughter, nor has he learned anything in getting to know her. Because less than ten seconds later, the four of them are off to investigate this weirdness.

Much to Clark’s unhappiness. He just wants to spend Halloween with his friends and pass out candy.

Much to the shock of small children when he answers the door as Superman. Which is hilarious. Because who would suspect that Superman would go as himself for Halloween?

No one.

Meanwhile, as Lois is investigating strange shit. She’s teasing Jimmy about having a mega crush on Kara. Which he does.

And I’m not sure she has a crush on him though since she’s super hard to read. She’s so childlike in her mannerisms and enthusiasm for the world around her. Which is entirely opposite to the Kara we’re getting on screen who is depressed.

Rightly so, considering all she’s lost.

This one is just relieved to no longer be a weapon and get to have fun. There’s a childlike wonder to the way she takes in the world, so I don’t blame Jimmy for not knowing if he’s part of the novelty of the world or not. Because as an audience member, I don’t know right now. She clearly cares for him.

But again, without a proper childhood, she appears so young and might not even know what she’s feeling is romantic or not. She might not be there yet.

I don’t know.

We’ll find out.

Meanwhile, I love that Clark and Kara will just scoop up their humans and take off without asking first. Just like, yep, we’re going. Let’s go.

I love how comfortable Lois and Clark are with each other. While also still freaking out a little about their future together. Because yeah, that can still be a lot even when you love someone and you know it’s forever. It can still weird you out if things go too fast. Very understandable and very on brand for Lois.

And on brand for Clark who always falls in love with Lois three seconds after meeting her and is ready to plan their whole lives together in great detail. But again, not everyone is Clark Kent.

The entire secret lab thing was just weird. And even weirder to discover who I believe to be Bizzaro. Not what I was expecting. I thought this would lead to Hank Henshaw who is the Cyborg Superman that the posters for this season were boosting about. However, he came later and is going to be paired with Lex Luthor.

Oh, and when did Luthor get his own company and filthy rich with Deathstroke on his side? I really need to watch season two. Damn.

Regardless, we found Bizzaro here and I suspect this is going to be a favorite type of version of Bizarro for me. I love when he’s not just outright evil or vicious. I like him to have purpose.

For example, the evil on in Smallville was so boring and without substance. The only interesting thing he ever did was prove that Lana never truly knew Clark.

However, the one in Superboy the TV series, my goodness. He’s such a nuanced character. Longingly to be loved. To be understood and not seen as a monster. He wants to fit in and have a life like Superboy does. But people freak out about him because he’s so different and doesn’t speak like a normal person. Then he finally gets love and it all blows up in his face making him unbearably lonely.

It is my favorite version of Bizzaro because he doesn’t come into conflict with Superboy because he’s all out evil. He has wants and desires that bring him into conflict with the hero. And the hero has to figure out how best to resolve these issues. With fists? Or kindness?

Here we get a taste of kindness as Clark and Kara realize he’s not evil or a monster. He was raised to be a good person and has been dealt a terrible hand.

Instead, they choose a bit of kindness and get some in return. I also love that he has a pet. Very adorable and very invested in seeing how this turns out for everyone.

Hopefully, it all turns out well.

I imagine whatever Luthor is planning with Henshaw will not turn out well.

Lois and Clark continue to be an adorable couple as he tears a fence apart while staring into her eyes. So damn adorable. Lois and Clark are one of my all-time favorite couples and this animated series is doing them such justice. It’s lovely to witness.

I loved the joke of a bird, a plane, and Superman for the trick or treaters. My goodness that was adorable.

Loved the kid in awe of seeing Superman.

I love it when we get kids on sets visiting the actor playing Superman. They always look like Christmas has come early with Santa himself before them. And they captured that awe with that animation and I really loved it.

Oh and does the whole world know who Kara is? That she’s Supergirl? Or am I missing something?

Probably should catch up on season two.

Regardless, this was a great opening episode. I’m really interested in checking out season two to understand how we got here with characters like Luthor and Kara. But also for an explanation as to why Kara thinks Brainiac is her father? Da eff was that?

Loved the Superman robots too, by the way. They all wanted or needed something from Superman who was beyond overwhelmed.

Love it.
