It is him!
It is the Traveler! Or Artagan.
My goodness, he’s got a lot of names. But I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am that I was right! I knew it felt like him. Also, kudos to the cast, crew, and animation for making him come to life so smoothly that he was easily recognizable to me in another form.
I am also super psyched that Matt was doing the voice for him.
It just couldn’t be anyone else. His voice is just so smooth as Artagan or the Traveler. He’s perfect. I might have been upset if they had someone else voice him.
Regardless, I need not worry.
These wonderful writers and cast have it all under control.
I mean, clearly. They slipped him in there, giving him enough of his personality that I knew it was him without being told. I absolutely love little details like that. It’s so much more fun for me to be screaming ‘I knew it’ rather than ‘oh come on.’
Kudos to them.
As for the episode itself, I freaking loved it.
I loved Artagan being so amused with Vox Machina that he helped them for no real reason beyond his amusement. Then his little smirk and wish for them to have safe travels.
Plus, his little lie about never seeing him again as he helped them through the Fey Realm.
No, can’t go that way. It’s worse than dealing with your absentee father. I promise. We don’t do Pixies.
Well shit. Now I want to meet the Pixies since you don’t want to Artagan. What is it about them that you don’t like? Is this a universal thing? Or a you thing?
Nope.
Instead, we find the lost city.
Remember that from like an episode ago?
Kima and Allura were all concerned because a city up and fucking disappeared. Well, we found it. Apparently, the Elves decided that the Fey Realm without rules or physics was a better alternative to the regular world being pillaged and set on fire by dragons.
You know? I’m honestly having a hard time arguing with that logic.
At least the Fey Realm isn’t on fire.
It’s got that going for it.
I also love how casual the twins were. Yeah, sure this city has ways of moving itself when it needs to. Just calmly dropping that info as if that isn’t the craziest sentence anyone has ever heard.
Then they just wander into the city and are like ‘we’re here to speak with our father.’
Who is a dick.
A royal dick.
He wants nothing to do with the children he’s fathered, and I once again cannot stand him. Somehow, his wife and child have more manners than he does. I’m also surprised the young child even knows of their old half-siblings’ existence. Although, I suspect that has more to do with the mother than the father.
She seems like a kind soul.
One who welcomed them into their home without worry or concern.
Introduced her child.
Sure, she seemed unsure. But again, it felt like the father’s doing.
As though he made everyone around him feel unwelcome because they fall short of his standards. Although, in this case the standard is having full elven children. Which again sir, you should have kept it in your pants if you could not deal with the consequences of your actions.
Then to top it off, you have the nerve to insult them because they didn’t call first.
How were they supposed to do that exactly? It’s not as though you care enough to leave a forwarding address when you’re city fucked off into the Fey Realm.
After all, people in power didn’t even know where you had gone?
Also, what do you mean you would have been pleased if they called first?
Shouldn’t the reappearance of your children be enough to put a smile on your face considering how they left? What kind of cold, cruel, heartless elf are you?
Just terrible. Terrible.
Then we have Vax who could not care less what his father thinks.
In fact, I think Vax thinks more of the dirt on his left boot than he does of his father. Perhaps even more of Percy than his own father and Percy got his sister killed.
However, Vex on the other hand so wants to be accepted by her father she throws down with him.
Though he gives her the worst answer by saying if she retrieves the bow, he’ll give her the welcome she thinks she deserves. I think any sort of warm welcome would do, you dickhead.
I mean, your wife managed to offer a better welcome. As did your child. The same child who did not want them to leave. The one both of your oldest treated with care and respect despite having no real reason to.
They were kind and insisted they were happy to meet her. That they had come just for that. Vex even gave her a gift.
Meanwhile, you shun them.
Horrible. I should send this episode to my dad. He has a running list of parents he hates from different media.
Sophie’s mom from the Batwoman TV show is still the ranking asshole and the reason the list started. I’m waiting for the day someone dethrones her.
Okay, let’s stop wasting breath on that fool of a man.
Because Vex proves herself to herself and no one else. Despite how much she wanted to rub that bow in his face and finally make him understand, I think she’s coming to terms with the idea that she can accept herself without his approval. It does not need to define her.
She can define herself.
She’s more than capable.
I loved the whole imagery of them trying desperately to reach Vex only to be blocked at every turn until she freed herself. I loved it.
So well done.
I loved that got her the bow and how much she pissed off Mr. Evil Plant Man.
Oh, and could someone please tell me who Vex was talking about when she said her heart already belongs to someone?
Is it Vax? Herself? Vox Machina? Percy?
Clearly, she’s got a thing for Percy and vice versa Mr. I’m Bestowing a Title on Her Randomly. A title in which he gives her because while he thinks the world of her, he wanted to be able to show the world how amazing she is.
Then he gave her the gift that allowed her to deliver the final blow.
Her old bow destroyed and this one freshly earned.
Such a perfect little circle there. Have I mentioned that I love the writers and creators and directors of this show? Like I’m not worried. I’m just enjoying the ride.
They’re the heroes. They’ll try and save the day or maybe they’ll fail today and try again tomorrow. Maybe someone will die but we’ll bring them back.
Like the rest of the team as they attempt to heal Grog. Although, he does take some of the wording the wrong way.
They’re still trying. Even when it’s hard. They don’t give up. But they people behind the show are writing a tale of adventure, sadness, grief, happiness, fun, and so much more. They’re giving you a story with all the ups and downs, but you know they’re going to be good and done well or not done at all.
The people behind the project care.
Making every episode feel special and amazing.
It’s so much fun to watch.
While we have a serious thing happening for one set of the party, the other half is trying to help Grog while they figure out what to do next. Giving us some lighter moments in the dense episode, balancing the story perfectly while they do.
I’m never bored or annoyed with pacing.
I appreciate Scanlan in this episode for his unique experience to help Grog and not make Pike deal with it. I love her kind grandfather and that apparently, he and Grog have already met. His calm stopping of Grog before he does something out in the open they did not intend for him to do.
All ending in a decision to head off to find another vestige together. Hoping that will somehow lead them to the rest of the party because at some point, the others should head to Westruun as well.
But I guess we’ll find out next episode, won’t we?
