Pretty much what the title says, albeit a differently than the books.
But to be honest, I don’t really mind.
Like The Mighty Nein Animated Series due to the sheer volume of information they’re condensing for the shows, I understand certain things must be streamlined for the sake of the story. And I don’t really mind much how it’s being portrayed with Percy Jackson.
I think I’d like a bit more sarcasm from Percy but aside from that, it’s done really well.
Unlike the movies which threw the source material out the window, the show embraces it, and twists it as needed. Course correcting things Rick Riordan might change or add now.
But we definitely get Percy’s discomfort when dealing with Tyson. He doesn’t love having him around, but he also doesn’t mind either because it’s the right thing to do. Even if adds difficulty to his life. And sometimes it bleeds through his interactions with Tyson whether he means to or not, because he doesn’t have much of a poker face.
Love Walker Scobell for managing that detail so perfectly.
Sally Jackson is a bit more involved like she was in the first season, but not necessarily the books.
She’s having odd dreams about coins. Much like Percy has odd dreams. Which is worrisome, because demigod dreams never mean anything good.
I mean, it brought Annabeth to Percy’s doorstep believing that the camp was being burned down.
Ah, Annabeth and Percy.
I love these two. I’ve loved them since I first read the books. And I was dying for an accurate portrayal of these two since the movies failed so epically to deliver. Before the show was cast, I wanted so badly to have a book accurate Annabeth, blonde princess curls, and all.
Except we didn’t get that.
However, Leah Sava Jeffries is the perfect Annabeth.
I said it last season, and I’m going to keep saying it. I don’t care that she doesn’t look like the Annabeth I pictured in the books. She has the perfect attitude and portrayal that nothing else matters. And if it matters to you, you should sit down, and be quiet. Because the only thing that matters is how well she plays this character who is book accurate.
Because she is book accurate.
Her awkwardness with Percy in the cab when the Gray Sisters ask whether or not this is the boyfriend and she vehemently denies it. When Percy freaks because he thinks there’s another boyfriend.
The horrid awkward between them as they arrive at camp.
And while things aren’t perfect between them because she didn’t love being a kid the way he does, there is no way in the world they’re going to let someone murder them. No. Instead, they’ll throw themselves into danger to save each other.
Or Annabeth will compromise.
Leah does an incredible job of portraying Annabeth’s utter discomfort dealing with a cyclops. If you read the book, you know why. If you haven’t, I’m not going to spoil it for you. But she has some baggage there.
We can clearly see Annabeth wrestling with that baggage as she decides that letting Tyson into the camp is far more important because it will ensure Percy’s safety and that’s more important to her than her worries or fears. Even with all their missteps and confusion and lack of communication, Annabeth puts Percy’s wellbeing over that.
I do really enjoy it.
I loved when Tyson is holding Percy and Annabeth appears. She’s so ready to throw down on his behalf.
Meanwhile, Tyson is ready to do the same.
Percy is the exact type of person that can inspire such loyalty because he’s a very loyal person himself. He’ll show up for you, every time. Making it impossible not to want to do the same for him.
Even though he doesn’t love having Tyson around does not mean he won’t protect him or care for him. Sure, he’ll get frustrated or annoyed because he’s a kid and human and no one is perfect. But he’ll still chuck himself out of the safe barrier to protect Tyson from monsters. He’ll still stand between him and angry mob from camp to keep him safe.
I really love that about Percy.
He’s loyal. To a fault. Again, you know, you know.
Annabeth and Percy’s awkwardness makes the episode for me as they settle into a new normal.
At the end of camp last season, Annabeth tried to be a kid. Living with her father for the first time since she was really young. And she found that she didn’t love it and wasn’t sure how to tell Percy this news. So she just didn’t.
Percy wanted to talk to her so badly and see how things were going out in the world. Yet they couldn’t because lack of offering to Iris.
Yet, Annabeth had a coin.
Percy unknowingly had one via his mom so he couldn’t contact her directly. Instead, they communicated through letters and were upset at the thought that the other could have called and didn’t. They’re a mess.
Which is perfectly understandable.
They’re 13-year-old demigods who have never really had normal lives or friendships. Of course, they’re both freaking clueless and useless and unable to tell the other the hard things because they’re afraid that’ll be the end of it.
But Percy moons over a picture of her.
Annabeth shouts that she never said boyfriend.
Tyson knows exactly who she is because Percy has talked about her and stared at her photo so much.
Annabeth didn’t want to disappoint him because she doesn’t love the same things he does. Who the heck hasn’t been there?
I love the awkward friendship, but could one day be more of it. There’s so much great chemistry between the two actors and I think they’re both just so damn perfect as Percy and Annabeth.
Meanwhile, Grover is somewhere being held by a cyclops.
Luke stabbed Thalia’s tree. You know, his friend Thalia. The one whose essence is in the tree keeping the barrier up to protect the camp. The one who gave her life so you could live you freaking butthead.
He is a butt head. I’m with Percy.
I do understand that Percy is a little too much on the butthead side of things with Luke and Annabeth always gives him too many passes. Which is key for things to work out the way they do.
Regardless, Annabeth hanging out by the tree and Percy coming to meet her was lovely.
I even really loved that Percy tried to give two relationships their space. He was having a talk with Tyson and needed to come to some conclusion with that when Annabeth also wishes to speak with him. It was a very mature moment as he explains that he’s in the middle of something.
And more immature on Annabeth’s part, not understanding that Percy needed a minute.
Though I do understand where it comes from with Annabeth as well.
I really love how in character these moments are. They get in their own ways. No gods needed to cause strife for these campers, they can screw up their own lives just fine.
Chiron is fired for being Kronos’ son. Which as Percy points out is freaking dumb. Which I appreciate because I said that during the second book in the first place and I like when characters are equally baffled by dumb choices.
Zeus – by that logic – you must also fire both brothers from their jobs as well.
And I doubt you’re going to do that, because you need both of them for a fight against Kronos because you’ll never be able to take all the Titans on without them. Guess you just needed someone to pick on because it can’t be your brothers. Dope.
The gods are jerks.
I do not like the new camp activities director. Honestly, I’d spend my time just eating and drinking in front of him.
Mr. D is as useless as ever.
Let’s host a chariot race instead of worrying about real problems. Which – you know – when I was a kid, I thought was super unrealistic. Like when Jor-El tells the Science Council on Krypton the planet is going to explode and no one listens to him. As a child, I thought there’s no way that could happen.
But after living to my 30s and since 2016 and 2020, I’ve found that it is completely realistic and I apologize for ever doubting those authors’ depictions. I see the truth now. Thank you.
Overall, it’s a solid outing for season two in adapting the second book. I really can’t wait to see how they play out the rest of the season with other changes I’m sure they’ll have to make to make it work. Though with Rick Riordan helping with the project I’m way less nervous than I was with the movies.
Shudders.
Anyway, onto the next episode! See you next Saturday!
Thanks for reading! Spread the love and read on!
