I feel like the last of this season was spread into multiple episodes and it probably could have been like two.
Instead, we have a very slow-paced kidnapping. These things are usually a bit more urgent, but I digress.
Anyway, three people are no longer kidnapped, they’re out and about as of last episode. They meet up with the police and we finally get a ‘ransom’ call.
A very fake one because Maya has been behind everything these last two seasons. She’s using her husband for money and she wants revenge for something that he and his partner did to some guy whose name I’ve forgotten. Honestly, we went from a porn with plot to a plot with porn with minimal warning.
The show took a turn into the serious plot and while it’s not it’s bread and butter, it’s not doing a terrible job of it.
It’s not doing a great one either.
Honestly, I think the writers for this series and even Stupid Wife need to learn the pacing of a story.
Like we spent three seasons with Duda pregnant and like two episodes with Valentina pregnant with their second child. It was like they realized how long they spent on other things and kicked into high gear.
Here we’re having a similar problem.
We’re spending time on monologues like Maya complaining to her unconscious husband about how she would like to kill him.
Interrogations that take too long.
There’s a bit of fat I would have trimmed from these episodes to streamline them a bit more and tighten the plot.
Those are my biggest complaints this season. I feel as though I watched a whole lot of nothing happen. The plot barely moved forward with six episodes.
We still don’t have Maya back from the ‘kidnapping.’
I think this is a problem they need to address going forward with their works. Even if past works there are hints of this speed up and slow down type of storytelling. It’s not pleasant.
But here’s the thing that keeps people coming back, they are telling a compelling story.
The characters. The plot. The sexiness of it all. They all play a part in how people accept the story they’re given.
I’ve said it many times, that I will choose well-executed characters over a well-executed plot every time.
Characters make the story. Not the plot.
Character driven plots. Not plot driven characters is my most favorite type of story. And overall, this YouTube Channel provides interesting stories. I loved the concept of Stupid Wife as these married women must fall in love with each other again or decide to go their separate ways.
Another is two best friends finally understanding their feelings for each other.
Another is where one woman leads a double life her boss who she’s falling for has no idea she’s in love with the same woman. She thinks there are two.
Compelling characters.
Less compelling plots are easy to handle for me when the characters are interesting. When the actresses have excellent chemistry. When you can tell how much these people love the project they’re working on.
All of which happens here.
I think they need to work on pacing. It’s my biggest complaint for any of their series they’ve made.
However, they’re still good.
Still watchable.
Even this one with its very soap-like drama.
Here in this episode, outside of the pacing there are many things I like.
The police chief, captain or whatever his title is – he’s for sure corrupt. He may have even had someone murdered. Or had Christopher murder his former assistant who collapsed this episode after trying to contact Giovanna.
Giovanna ignored the call because she was taking the money to get Maya back.
And this right here is important to me. Would Giovanna have ignored the call if she wasn’t so worried for Maya?
She’s been in distress since last episode, agonizing over Maya, and getting her back. She’s even yelled at Christopher a few times because of his apparent cold attitude to his wife.
Would she ignore that call if it were someone else she was sent to rescue?
I don’t think so.
Giovanna is a good cop.
But her logic and reason are compromised when it comes to Maya. Just like Maya’s is when it comes to Giovanna. After all, she gave up a whole lot of money to ensure Giovanna made headway in the case. For no other reason than to help her.
Giovanna ignores the phone.
The former secretary may be dead.
And now what of all that information she knew?
Especially about the police officer in charge? Is the evidence going to be gone? Destroyed? Is she really dead or is it just a warning?
Does Christopher care about his wife?
I spent a chunk of the last review I believe also calling Christopher out on his cold and callous behavior about his wife’s circumstances.
However, in this episode for the first time, he actually appears to care.
Is it an act?
Except he does it around the one man who knows all of Christopher’s dirty little secrets. The cop who is in on it with him or at least the one he has under his thumb.
He does put up one for Giovanna as well.
But does he really care?
I suppose that’s one of those things I like about complex characters. Christopher may be a bad guy, but there’s also a part of him that does care for his wife. Viewing her as a bit more than just a prize he has won and can show off.
Giovanna is forced to deal with Christopher in order to get Maya back.
Something she even breaks down over.
I think it’s the first time that she’s had to acknowledge that she has very real and very deep feelings for Maya. As something more than just a fling. More than sex.
Yet she’s wondering if it’s all come too late.
Has she figured it out in time to lose Maya for good? Will she tell her?
Would she keep it to herself if she gets Maya back in one piece? Because as far as she’s concerned, Maya is innocent. She has no idea that she staged the kidnapping to get money from Christopher.
Will she tell Maya that she loves her? Will she keep pretending this is nothing more than just sex for her?
Because it hasn’t been. Not for a while.
I don’t think Giovanna was ready to admit it. However, this turn of events forced her to deal with the truth.
She has feelings for Maya.
And now she has many problems.
This woman is part of an ongoing investigation. She could be a suspect.
In reality, she’s actually the mastermind of it all, but Giovanna doesn’t know that at the moment. Or maybe she does. I do enjoy how Giovanna is written. She keeps everything close to the vest, never really letting you know what she does or does not know. Or even suspect.
It took the entire season during season one for it to be revealed she suspected Maya at all as the one pulling the strings. Maybe she knows more than she lets on.
Maybe she’s keeping it to herself because she doesn’t trust everyone around.
Which is not a bad thing given the fact that she has several turncoats in her midst. For either side.
Maya is married to someone Giovanna definitely believes is a crook one way or another.
There’s a lot at play here and I’m not sure how she’ll handle it.
I’m not sure how Maya is going to handle it either. I doubt when she started this game, there was any room for falling in love with the cop investigating your crimes.
Nor do I think that Giovanna had fall in love with the criminal mastermind on her bingo card.
I do enjoy the characters here in this show.
Everyone has their own agenda, and they don’t all mix well. It’s a constant struggle to keep the upper hand and keep it a secret as you do.
Except for maybe Giovanna whose only goal is to be a good cop and do a good job.
She’s the most honest character on the show and the one surrounded by the most liars and two-faced people except her partner and best friend. She’s just clueless about most things except for Giovanna’s feelings for Maya. Those she has squarely pegged.
Every character has something they want, and it conflicts with the other characters wants.
It is also one of the most ambitious projects this company has tried to pull off with a lot of moving parts and less focus on just the two main actresses as they attempt to step up their storytelling.
While it is no masterpiece, it’s definitely amazing to see their skills developing and how far they’ve come from dimly lit apartments to sets, multiple locations, crew, and so on as they expand their horizons.
It has its rough edges and it’s definitely a little soapy at times, it’s still a good time to watch, and enjoy crazy weird drama while two women fall in love. There is not enough of that in the world, and I hope they continue to make these wonderful stories.
I know I’ll be a fan for a very long time.
I cannot wait to see what heights they’ll reach and what they’ll try next. If you haven’t downloaded their app or checked out their channel on YouTube, you should.
Onto to part two when it drops next year!
Thanks for reading! Spread the love and read on!
