Xeque Mate: 2×03 – Review

Well shit.

Things have happened.

Yep.

If I wasn’t sure before that Maya is the bad guy, I know for sure now.

She set up a kidnapping. On herself. On herself.

Seriously, what did I just watch?

Maya has herself kidnapped as part of her evil plot against her husband Christopher… for reasons.

Did we find out in season one or any time why Maya is doing all this? I think it’s still a thing yet to be revealed, but hey, I could be misremembering something. I think season one was a year ago now and I haven’t rewatched it in a while.

Just hang in there with me.

So…

Maya has herself and her husband kidnapped on Giovanna’s watch. Which is like super sucky for her, because you know the police captain, and Christopher are going to use that against her.

I’m not sure how well Maya factored that into her master plan.

Especially since it appears she gave up something to help Giovanna make a break in the case.

The money in the Swiss account.

Heitor for sure is not responsible for that and I think Giovanna knows it. I think there’s something about the entire case that doesn’t sit well with her.

Which is why we had a super weird montage of her just staring at Heitor’s wiki page while she smoked. A lot.

She needs a nicotine patch or something.

Anyway, with all this, she appears to suspect there’s more to the case than meets the eye.

And Maya gave her this piece of the puzzle or invented as a way to keep Giovanna on the case. To give her something to bring to Christopher and the captain who were breathing down her neck over her lack of leads.

But she’s suspicious of the information.

Though she does pursue it as she looks for Heitor who has disappeared for whatever reason.

Then we have Clarisse who was the last person seen with Heitor. Something another member of Giovanna’s team is covering up.

That team member wishes for Clarisse to come clean to Giovanna and tell her what is going on or she’ll end up in jail.

It’s very weird.

I’m honestly not sure what’s happening there.

Then Christopher returned from his business trip and Maya and Giovanna have returned from theirs. Maya takes a shower, and Christopher scares the shit out of her. He appears to want something more from her until he gets a phone that sends him to the police station.

I think this is the first time we actually see him relatively civil to Giovanna as she presents him with the information.

Which isn’t saying much beyond he’s an ass and is happier when he gets what he wants. In this case, results.

Except they don’t have Heitor.

He’s disappeared.

They’re looking for him.

But eh, who knows what happened to him. Giovanna wondered how a man could just disappear.

All of that happens, and yet the most interesting thing to me in the episode is Maya and Giovanna’s interaction in the bathroom.

Giovanna comes to greet her as her bodyguard for the day. Joining her and Christopher as they head to lunch. But they get distracted by each other as always.

Giovanna questions whether or not Maya has slept with Christopher, to which she answers yes. Clearly, this answer upsets Giovanna who pulls away seemingly disgusted. Which is an interesting thing from someone who claims she’s not falling in love.

She’s genuinely upset about this.

Maya reveals she’s lying and that she has not slept with Christopher but wonders if this bothers Giovanna. She denies it.

Everything about this scene is odd to me. In a good way.

Neither of these women want to admit they have feelings for each other, yet they act like a couple now more than they have before. They claim it’s fun, but Maya soothes the jealousy away after fanning the flames for a moment.

Enjoying the look of jealousy in Giovanna’s eyes before easing it from her mind.

Even though Giovanna denies the whole thing, clearly Christopher upsets her in many ways.

I think part of her, finds him undeserving of Maya. Suspects him of committing the crime himself. Lastly, she appears to just dislike him as a person outright, regardless of anything else.

There are so many layers to her dislike. I love that.

I love how Maya holds her hand out and soothes Giovanna in the bedroom after they exit the bathroom. Almost like she’s saying she’d rather be with her, but this is something that must be endured for now.

Because all of it feels very… for now.

She’s married to Christopher. For now.

They’re not a couple. For now.

She’s working towards something that can’t be stopped. For now.

Everything is working on a schedule only Maya knows about. One that she appears to be keeping most people in the dark about, including Giovanna while also trying to keep Giovanna close.

As both women are incredibly possessive of each other, in spite of the circumstances they find themselves in.

Furthermore, if we need examples of Giovanna falling in love, she kept screaming for her over and over. Telling them not to touch her as they were dragged away. Fighting back as much as she could.

Pretty sure if Christopher had the gun to his head, she wouldn’t have dropped her weapon. She would have preferred he got shot over Maya.

There’s also Maya.

In a moment of great ‘suffering’ she chose to call out for Giovanna.

Now, we know that she was in no real danger given these are people she’s hired to do this job. But everyone else outside her and these men, don’t know that.

Giovanna and Christopher are clueless.

Maya never loses control. Even when she appears to. She plays the part of the perfect wife or whatever is needed, whenever needed.

Yet in that moment, she didn’t play the perfect wife.

A perfect wife would have been calling for her husband. Worried for him. Not trying to see if her bodyguard was alright. And maybe you might call out for your bodyguard as well, since they’re literally tasked with protecting you. There’s probably a bond there too.

But not once, does she call out for Christopher.

It’s only Giovanna.

She only calls out for Giovanna.

And when the dust settles and everyone is safe again. If I were Christopher, I’d be replaying that moment in my head over and over again and wondering. Wondering what it meant. If there was something more to that statement than calling for a protecter.

Because it was.

I mean, right now there’s another series called Only You where someone falls for their bodyguard.

Which I will also review, if and when all episodes are dropped on YouTube.

Anyway, if I was Christopher, I’d be worried about my marriage.

I mean, he has a lot more than to worry about given that his wife is the one trying to take him down or rob or embarrass him, but he has none of that information. All he knows, right now, is that his wife called out for someone else in a time of great stress and worry and panic.

Not him.

I’d be like, honey, we need to talk.

Like now.

Anyway, let’s see what the next episode has in store for us! Thanks for reading!
