Meet the Parkers! So, I’ve finally managed to get my hands on the first six issues of the new Ultimate Spider-Man series. My goodness, is it something.
I only had a vague idea of the premise, like super vague. It was set on another Earth in the multiverse and Peter had a family. That’s it. That’s all I had.
So to read the first six issues was quite jarring compared to say… reading the main storyline.
Well, because, everything was turned on it’s head here!
Spoilers ahead, so stop if you don’t want any!
Harry is the Green Goblin. He’s not crazy, nor is he a villain. In fact, he’s actively trying to help the city and wants Peter’s help after Peter is bitten by a spider decades after he was supposed to be.
Apparently, someone is messing with the timeline.
Which means Stark someone, I think, blew up a bunch of people. Including Aunt May. We attend a ceremony honoring those who were lost.
Which also included Harry’s parents. And he’s super bitter about it. Not that I blame him.
Oh, Uncle Ben is totally alive. And is a reporter. He and Jonah are friends. JJJ likes Peter as well, wants him to come work with them when they open their own paper after discovering that they can no longer print the truth.
Instead, they’d be forced to write puff pieces for the Daily Bugle. Which is funny given that JJJ is known for being loose with the truth when it comes to journalism. So it’s refreshing to see him take it so seriously.
It’s also fun to see Uncle Ben older and wiser and calmly quit his job after Jonah’s explosive quitting.
Peter is happily married to Mary Jane.
They’ve got two kids who are an excellent mix of the two of them.
I loved that Peter was forced to reveal the truth to his daughter to prevent her from being scared and then she helped color his costume. Which he controls with his mind. That’s weird. And new.
Also somehow related to Harry’s tech.
Harry is married to Gwen Stacy.
They seem like great people.
Mary Jane owns her own business as a PR person. She’s doing quite well for herself given that she only started a year ago. I truly enjoy her character here.
Alongside how well she takes Peter’s little secret.
Which I – for one – am super glad we didn’t drag this into a long secret kept from his wife. But I did like that he had no idea how to tell her. Beyond that he wanted to change because he felt like something was missing from his life.
It’s incredible to me that despite how much Spider-Man gets in the way of his normal life, Peter clings to Spider-Man. He can’t give it up. Even a world where he didn’t know what he missing until someone told him exactly what it was.
One seemingly cannot exist without the other.
Even if his duty as Spider-Man often complicates and makes his life worse.
Though I do find this a refreshing change of pace because it didn’t seem to impact his life too much. He still worked late hours like he would have as a photographer. He’s happier, allowing him to be there for his family better when he’s home.
He kept in contact with his wife while on patrol.
He’s got patience and intelligence and calm that teenage Peter lacked and needed to grow into.
I like this take from later in his life.
Because I think writers at Marvel don’t understand that this Peter who has kids and a wife and a job is interesting too. He’s juggling all the things we do while trying to save the world. It’s no easy feat and he doesn’t ever make it look easy.
In fact, he often illustrates what not to do.
Like accidentally leaving the suit on while getting milk and frightening one of his children by mistake.
Keeping secrets from his wife.
But also going to her for support and comfort when he needs it.
I loved in the first issue that Mary Jane could tell he needed to talk and asked him about it. To which, he very maturely answered yes, but not right that moment because he had to get to work. A conversation that they picked up later that night.
I loved his interactions with his kids.
How each of them is different and he parents accordingly.
I love that he thanks goodness for his wife to his kids.
I love that they’re in a loving and mature relationship like they should still have in the main continuity. I love that Mary Jane and Peter work so well together.
I love how intriguing the plot is without being too heavy handed.
Kingpin as the villain is always fun. Nothing worse than a corrupt businessman.
Harry Osborn is odd to say the least. Very stiff and stilted. But clearly a good man. He may be a bit misguided what with all the blowing up he’s doing around the city. However, he does have people’s best interests at heart.
Also, I so need to see more of Gwen and Mary Jane as a duo here.
I have a feeling I’m going to love them based on their bathroom conversation where they got along so well. I loved Gwen not knowing how to ask and the unflappable Mary Jane telling her to just shoot.
I love Mary Jane as this strong individual.
She loves Peter, but they each function without the other. Though they prefer to function together if they can.
I love that she sent pictures of her children goofing around with each other as only siblings can. Simultaneously enamored and frustrated with them.
Overall, this series brings something to the table like Superman & Lois, except for the part where Peter is just getting started as Spider-Man. Unlike the Superman show, where he’s been active for decades by the time we meet him.
Here, Peter has his life together and is adding Spider-Man in.
He’s made it a family secret. With some (hopefully) good friends to back them up.
An honest paper coming to fruition.
I’m really enjoying this series and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Which means I’m off to several comic stores to find the next issues! Wish me luck! It appears to be quite the popular series!
As for all of you superhero fans, subscribe so you never miss a thing!
Thanks for reading! Spread the love and read on!
