Xena Warrior Princess: The Xena Scrolls – Review

What is happening?

No, I’m seriously asking.

One moment, we’re watching Xena and we’re in Ancient Greece, then we’re in the 1900s, and Xena and Gabrielle and Joxer have been reborn. They find each other again. Go on an adventure, nearly die, and release Ares. But Xena comes back in her reborn persona to fight Ares and keep him locked up.

Oh, and Joxer had a French accent, then a Jersey one because he was lying…?

But we went from A Christmas Carol to Indianna Jones and I have whiplash.

And then at the end, they pitched Xena to a studio executive to make the series in the first place. So Xena the show exists in the universe in which Xena lived and all of Gabrielle’s scrolls survived and became the TV show.

Am I getting that right?

We’re a show inside of a show or something.

I don’t know.

Either way, it’s a hilarious little ending there.

And we’re get to see all the actors enjoy getting to place wildly different characters.

Lucy Lawless is playing a meek and bookish nerd sort of woman.

Renee O’Connor is playing the grizzled Indianna Jones, badass Xena like chick.

Ted Raimi plays a doof. Which wouldn’t appear to be that much different than Joxer, except he’s mildly entertaining here. And his attempts at seeming cool were way better than Joxer’s. I actually believed his accent there for a while.

However, this also begs a different question – they have children?!

Joxer – I’m immediately confused by. Who had a baby with him?

Right? I mean, these are descendants with the same souls. Am I getting that right? Which would mean each of them had children.

For Xena that’s easy, Solan already exists. So, it makes sense that her bloodline is continuing.

But I’m confused by Gabrielle’s. Am I going to have to deal with another male love interest? What is happening? Is this explained?

Is it one of those things I have to accept?

Because I won’t. I’ve clearly stated that these two are in love and I’d like for them to figure it out before I finish the series, please for the love of Aphrodite!

And I’m not going to discuss Joxer.

Just no.

Overall, this episode is well done.

It took me a few scenes to get over the shock of walking into such a starkly different episode. The writers completely let loose, and decided to head off in an interesting and unique direction.

Showing us many things.

Xena is a still a badass years later.

She’ll show up whenever she’d needed, no matter what. And never give up trying to do the right thing.

She loves Gabrielle a whole lot as she informs Janice. Clearly, that’s what that scene was, I will not be accepting any other takes. Thank you.

Ares will remain a pain in the ass for the entire series unless we lock him up somewhere.

Also, his interest in Hitler confirms a theory I’ve had.

Ares keeps telling Xena to head an army and bring the world peace in his honor. That he’ll give her whatever she needs and help her take over the world. He describes it as a paradise almost and gives the sense in some scenes that it would coincide with her current viewpoint regardless.

Except Xena never agrees.

Even though he’s supposedly offering peace and harmony. She doesn’t buy it.

Because he’s not. Not really.

Peace can’t be achieved with weapons and violence.

Even at the end of the conflict, is there truly peace?

Xena understands that the God of War can never truly offer peace to the world. She rejects his offers.

And ultimately, he explains himself clearly here by suggesting that he could convince Hitler to remake the world in a better image. Which, as people know, is not a good idea.

Also, side note, how scary would Hitler be in that world if he had Ares to help him?

I’m going to shudder and run from that thought.

Anyway, Ares illustrates to the audience he is a villain. No matter how nicely he dresses up the idea of world domination and molding it into one person’s image, it’s not peace he’s after.

I enjoyed this episode even though it deviated from norms.

It was an interesting change of pace.

And for my final thought on the matter, I want to point just one more thing out.

At the end of the episode or at the end of the day, Xena and Gabrielle found each other again. As their descendants decide to join up and travel together.

If that doesn’t scream ‘meant to be’ what will?!
