Pride – Batmoore – 2024

Do you remember, do you remember, this couple?

This couple wasn’t endgame, but they were supposed to be.

Sigh.

I really wish Ruby Rose hadn’t left.

I enjoyed this show so much and the third season was good too after it figured out how to make Ryan Wilder her own person. Because in season two, she still felt like a kid playing dress-up in her older sister’s clothes.

And while I liked Ryan and Sophie ending up together, I really wanted these two together.

Even when Ruby Rose was Batwoman, I didn’t these two would have a happy ending.

Not at all.

Want to know why?

Sophie didn’t recognize Kate when she kissed her as Batwoman. Typically, in superhero tales, the love interest almost always figures it out through touch or kiss.

See Smallville, Lois & Clark The New Adventures of Superman, and so on.

Except she didn’t.

Major bummer.

Though it could have been explained as Sophie still being thrown off the scent by Kate switching herself out with Julia in episode seven. As Sophie firmly believed by then, that they were two different people.

I was super excited when one of the creators (I think) someone said they were endgame after Ruby Rose left. Leaving them to figure out what to do next.

Either way, I enjoyed the entire first season and pieces of season two as Sophie crumbled over the loss and return of Kate Kane.

What is it with gays and Kate? Kate Kane? Kate Whistler?

Anyway, their scenes were always enjoyable with the underlying tension of all their history. These two were together for three years in college. They broke up because of a stupid rule ‘don’t ask, don’t tell.’

Someone asked, Kate told, and Sophie didn’t. Causing a rift between them and their paths to diverge.

Eventually, Sophie’s kidnapping brings Kate home, only to discover she’s married. Except the marriage falls apart piece by piece as Sophie can’t deny the connection to Kate, to Batwoman, and the pieces of herself she tried to bury.

All of it comes out. As does Sophie and she’s forced to deal with her issues.

And well, the show was setting up what I hoped was a lovely slow burn over the course of many seasons.

Alas, we were never granted such.

However, we were granted great moments after we thought Kate was lost. Julia cleaned out Kate’s safe on Kate’s orders, should she ever die. Something Sophie wished to hang around for, only for her then girlfriend to tell her that it wasn’t for her eyes.

But Sophie didn’t think Kate meant her, when she told Julia wasn’t allowed to share the contents with anyone.

I loved Julia’s response. “Is that some unrequited soulmate clause?”

Like damn, just go for their jugulars.

Only to open the safe and discover there’s a letter for Sophie.

Meaning Sophie was right. Kate did not mean her in the event of her death. Julia is forced to eat a bit of crow and I love the dig Kate sends in her demise, knowing full well they were dating at the time.

Kate reveals the truth to Sophie, asks for forgiveness, and tells her she loves her.

As Sophie cries over the letter.

It’s emotional moment.

One that served to make me feel even more robbed that we never got to see their story play out the way it was intended. They clearly had plans, but with Ruby Rose leaving, and them replacing the character, there was no place for Kate Kane in Gotham anymore.

Such a bummer. Alas, we did end up with Wildmoore in the end, and that kind of makes up for it.

Almost.
