Mitch and Cam.

Cam and Mitch.

This is a couple on a wacky show and they’re as wacky as they come, for sure.

But I love them. They have an honor as being the second male couple on my list this year. I recently got into watching Modern Family and these two guys.

While I don’t really relate to them or their struggles as a gay male couple personally, I enjoy watching their story unfold. I loved seeing the excitement over being able to get married. Finally. Since I started watching it in 2023, I had forgotten this show aired before it was legal to marry in all 50 states.

Cam and Mitch and all their friends’ excitement over finally being able to have what’s been denied for so long was amazing. It was truly touching.

Their adoption of Lily and the struggle to decide how to pursue a second child was heart-wrenching and more than I could have imagined from a sitcom.

All of their ups and downs together as they navigated parenthood in today’s society while being a male/male couple are something I could understand, even if I couldn’t put myself in ether of their shoes. The story was compelling.

Because these were two people who wanted a family.

They wanted to have a child.

To be treated like everyone else.

Sure, they fit some of the stereotypes, but it’s no reason to put them on the outside of society. To say they can’t be married or part of the world around them.

They wanted to be able to enjoy life like Phil and Claire or Jay and Gloria. Be part of the world, not watching it go by.

Watching them deal with Lily as she grew into her own person.

Forget that they should give her information on her heritage because they just see her as their daughter is amazing. Listening to them try to decide who would be best to take care of Lily should something happen to them.

All of the fights.

All the diets.

All the disagreements.

Pouting and issues, at the end of the day, the love between them was felt in every moment.

I loved their wedding. I loved how Jay came through.

I loved how Mitch came to terms with his relationship to his father, despite all the issues. I love that they were part of the family and put forth the idea that a family is a family because people choose each other.

Not because of blood or what stereotypes say.

Love is love.

They love each other, and they love their daughter. And all the crazy humans in their lives who are there day in and day out when things are tough or hard or good or bad or exciting.

Modern Family proves that love is what makes a family.

Mitch and Cam are out, proud, and loud and they deserve to be!

If you’ve never seen the show, hop to it! It’s gold! I swear! So good.

These two ladies have broken up and got together on their five year show so many times! Unlike Mitch and Cam, I’m never certain they’ll make it through a movie or a date before something goes horribly wrong. Oh, and by the way, one of them isn’t human, and the other is a medical doctor!
