Pride – Harper & Abby – 2024

Harper and Abby – A gay romcom

To say I was excited to see this movie coming out was an understatement.

Then Covid happened and who knew when the movie would be released, but then it was revealed to be headed right to Hulu. And well, I signed up for a Hulu account.

I was one of those people who made their numbers look real good that year.

Overall, this movie is meh at best.

It didn’t need a coming out story. Every gay story is always a coming out story. I like it when it’s just not a thing. Not to say those stories aren’t important, they are. They’ve just been done. We want regular Hallmark style romcoms now for the LGBTQ+ community please.

So I have complaints about the overall story.

But!

But Abby and Harper are pretty cute together.

And while I totally understand that Harper’s ex is hot and interesting, but I also know that unlike most Hallmark movies, Abby was actually in love with Harper. Most of the time, the boring guy at the beginning who can’t get his act together or is duller than paint drying is clearly a placeholder.

Unlike Harper.

Who is a real person with real fears.

Because as we can clearly see, her parents are far from perfect, and have honestly messed up all of their children. Albeit in different ways.

Ultimately, Harper isn’t the only one afraid to lose her parents’ love. It’s all of the kids.

And that helps with the storyline because it shows it’s more than just Harper’s coming out story. There’s also everything with her sisters that they’re afraid to share or feel left out.

I love that they don’t even get engaged right away after things are resolved between them.

Abby waits.

She ensures that they are for real. That they truly know and love each other. That they can be what the other needs.

Because Abby’s choice about wanting to be with someone who is ready is also valid.

Some people don’t want to jump back into the closet. They want to be themselves. They’re sick of the world forcing them to hide and conform. They want to be loud and proud.

Unfortunately, not everyone is a in place to do that.

But it is totally fine that you’re not in a place where you can accommodate them.

It’s as valid as Harper not being ready.

I loved the struggle between what’s expected and what people want.

Because it’s revealed that even the parents choose to do things based on expectations from society rather than what they wanted. They put such an emphasis on it, that they lost sight of themselves.

That they taught their children to hide themselves.

And in the end, it’s not good for anyone. No matter the sexual orientation or person.

Being true to yourself is important. And it’s good message.

But damn, a feel good Christmas gay romcom would have been nice too.

However, I do watch this movie every Christmas now at least once. Maybe more. Don’t judge.

If you haven’t watched this movie, get to it!

Wanna a hint for tomorrow? One half of the couple, the actress has died twice in different TV shows, and become a god both times.
