Tracker: Into The Wild – Review

I’m going to be brutally honest here – this is not the best episode.

There’s nothing wrong with it per say.

It’s got a solid plot, and the characters were somewhat interesting. I loved the angle that connects Reenie to it emotionally, but it didn’t quite hit as much as it could have.

Like the one with her friend’s missing son hit better.

To be fair, it’s a solid episode with a solid plotline.

Colter is forced to rely on his skills in the wilderness to track them down, which he does successfully. I did enjoy the parallel of how he can put everything together without being given all the facts, since he was essentially flying blind out in the woods.

He managed to piece everything together and keep everyone safe.

He even shot a guy.

Like it was a solid episode.

I mention the guy getting shot because Colter thus far has been pretty tame when it comes to using violence. He doesn’t shot to kill or fight to kill. He just survives.

He also appears to want others to survive as well.

Meaning, he’s pretty tame when it comes to using his weapon. Usually shooting to disarm or impair. Not to kill.

This was a far different approach. Mostly, I think because he had no other choice in the matter. He was defending himself and someone else.

Far more important.

However, the highlight of the episode is Reenie.

A badass in her own right. Willing to put her ass on the line for the people she cares about or because it’s the right thing to do.

Unlike Colter, she doesn’t appear to have the skills to defend herself like he does. Maybe she has some fighting ability, I don’t know. We haven’t really gotten that far into her backstory. But from what I’ve seen, she’s not a skilled fighter.

Instead, she uses her brain.

She recognizes that someone was in the house. Knows she’s going to go looking, so she grabs a weapon.

Maybe not the best weapon. But she opted for something instead of walking in there empty handed and sometimes that’s enough.

Surprise, shock, are valuable tools in a fight.

Reenie is fascinating to me, honestly.

Like the vibe we got in the pilot is nothing like the one we have in the show. At first, she appears very superficial. Concerned with money and a scorned woman after Colter left her after they slept together. Loud and angry.

That’s all I got from her in the pilot.

Yet, every time she’s appeared on screen since, she’s been nothing like the first impression. And I truly think that was a major mess up.

Pilots set the tone.

I thought a superficial and scorned ex, where they make moony eyes at each other, while awkwardly working together most of the time was all I was in for. I was dreading her return to the screen every episode I walked into afterward.

But I’ve been so pleasantly surprised by the level of depth they decided to give her instead.

Credit to them for changing it, but like also, what were you thinking in the pilot?

Reenie is caring, brave, independent, and incredibly intelligent.

Looking back on the pilot, instead I see a woman who wanted to speak her mind about how angry she was with Colter for leaving like that. Instead of acting like a mature adult about the situation.

Reenie said her piece on the matter and the moved on.

While I’m sure it won’t last, she shut the door on their romantic entanglements and moved on to working together professionally and with dignity. Without awkwardness.

I freaking love it.

Reenie calls Colter without hesitation because he’s the best at what he does. There’s no one else to call as far as she’s concerned. He’ll get the job done and well.

Reenie is his first call without the awkwardness because of the same reason.

They’re both incredibly good at their chosen professions. They’re mature enough to recognize and accept it without letting past emotions conflict with the present.

And it’s so refreshingly wonderful to watch.

Especially because Reenie is a badass chick!

She’s standing her ground, speaks her mind. Doesn’t let her own or anyone else’s ego get in the way. She does the right thing for the right reasons and is a good person.

She cares.

Looking back, she had a moment of anger, and then it was over. She moved on.

And I love that it wasn’t her whole personality being angry with Colter or pining over him. Instead, she’s allowed to be a whole character just like Colter.

She has feelings.

But she also jokes around with him and cares about people. She has a life and she’s not waiting around for Colter to get a clue. She lives her life whether he’s there or not.

She has friends. She’s friend with the people Colter works with.

There’s more to her than being an ex.

Which is the best.

More people need to write women like this. They can be angry without it ruling everything. Without it being their whole identity. Because I feel like there’s so much more to Reenie than what we’ve seen thus far and I can’t wait to see it unfold.

So this episode while falling flat with the plot does remind me why I love Reenie so much!

Kudos to the writers and the actress herself!
