I’m disgusted by this episode.
Not to say the episode was bad, it was hard to watch. Hard to hear. Hard to see the ending.
It tackled an intense issue and handled it well, but that issue ultimately makes me super uncomfortable. Because as much as society doesn’t want to talk about what men can get away with, this is the type of stuff. This could happen.
To me.
To my friends.
It has happened.
People live with this.
Day in and day out.
While their assaulters live their lives without remorse or regret or any sort of retribution.
I hate these storylines, because they scare me.
But I do want to commend NCIS Hawai’i for how well done it was.
Kate and Commander Chase’s quiet moment of reflection. Kate’s refusal to stop looking for Rebecca because something seemed off about the case. Tennant trusting her gut. Commander Chase and company standing behind the horrible man, waiting to unleash justice.
It can’t change what happened. It can’t bring Rebecca back.
But all those men are dead. And the last one standing is headed to prison for a very long time. It’s something.
I love Tennant’s absolute anger.
Her disgust.
Her indignation.
Her refusal to give him an inch.
And slapping the cuffs on him.
It wasn’t perfectly satisfying, but it was close. He doesn’t deserve to keep his dignity.
And I’m with Kate. Even at the end of the episode. I want Osborne to answer Kate’s question. If you knew what they were doing, why didn’t you do something?
I don’t care that the answer was someone higher up than him was part of it. I don’t.
It’s no excuse.
It’s not a reason to keep letting them get away with a horrible thing. Ever.
You report them all, and you keep going until someone listens to you. I don’t care about your career. Your life. Or what happens to you. Because red tape and them coming after you in the woods, clearly you can handle yourself.
No.
You were an enabler.
For that alone, you should pay with your career.
For defending yourself? No, I don’t think you should lose your job over that. You took down a corrupt unit.
I think you should be discharged somewhat honorably. Because stopping them, is worth something.
But letting it go on, until they brutally murdered someone?
You should pay for that. Which is why I find myself conflicted. You want to be a Marina more than anything. Take that away and keep your benefits.
But at the same time, he and the other guy should be an example of zero tolerance, and lose everything.
Because keeping quiet is the same as agreeing.
He let it happen.
Time and time again.
I hate that.
So, yeah, everything should be lost over that. Not over taking out your unit. They had that coming when they tried to kill you. I don’t feel the punishment should be connected to that at all. But to the innocent people hurt along the way.
Okay… Give me a moment.
I have very strong feelings over these kinds of storylines. I think this was handled well for the most part. But truthfully, it’s one of those episodes I walk away from, feeling wrong, or changed.
I wonder if the men watching feel it too. I walk away thinking it’s a warning to women to be careful, while the men see an interesting or unjust storyline and just carry on.
How can you not feel different? Not feel something? How do you not want to scream into the universe about the injustice of it all?
…
As for the rest of the episode, it was good.
I didn’t think Osborne was guilty at all since everyone was trying so hard to pin it on him. When the guy they found still alive in the woods got shot, I was relieved to stop listening to him rant about how bad Osborne was.
Honestly, the harder you try to convince me or someone’s terribleness or goodness, the less I believe you. Like damn, let the truth speak for it’s own damn self.
Oh, wait, you can’t! Because you’re a bunch of horrible people. Right.
I loved the moment with Tennant and her mom…? I think. Can’t help but wonder where that’s going to lead.
Ah, and we have Maggie returning. Sort of. Bet she’ll be the final villain or something.
There’s a rumor going around that NCIS will have another spin-off, but for elite. If it gets rid of Hanna, I’m good with that.
Although, his presence didn’t annoy me very much in this episode. I loved the way he helped Kate work through the problem without paperwork. Then their little moment in the field when he reminded her of Rule #20.
Of course, Kate memorized all of them.
She’s never met a rule she didn’t like.
Kai and Jesse out in the woods together were pretty awesome. Especially, the quiet breathing moment.
Also, I was suspicious of the leader the minute he suggested that his guys couldn’t be tracked and we needed him.
Like really? We have Kai.
Kai was a Marine if I recall correctly. Both he and Jesse were successful and so was Tennant. You just wanted to shoot the guy before he could talk.
Overall, the episode was well executed, but I just… I can’t talk about it anymore.
It hurts. It really does.
Let me know what you guys think about the episode.
