Stupid Wife – 3×01 Review

Ow, ow, ow, ow, ouch!

Okay, the entire opening of this episode hurt.

Like I’ve heard arguments like that from my mom and her family. So, childhood horrors there I just didn’t need.

How can Catarina believe she’s justified in this decision? Like honestly?

Although, I’ve seen plenty of entitled people in real life and online. I shouldn’t be surprised. Yet here I am.

Yikes.

Now, before we dive further into the episode I want to make a note of something – the opening.

In the first season, the opening is Valentina alone. She’s developing photos of her wife and looking pensive as she’s lost the love of her life for the moment.

In the Christmas Special, they’re united. They’re decorating the tree with all the love and memories they have together. They’re standing shoulder to shoulder and in love with each other.

In season two, they’re together, but it’s not the same as the Christmas special. It’s not quite as solid. The foundation they had before isn’t there. It’s a new sort of love developing together.

In the college special, it’s reflective of where they are at the moment. Playful, teasing, and not quite a couple yet.

Here, they’re solid. Even more solid than they were in the Christmas special. Secure in the knowledge that no matter what life throws at them, they’ll handle it. Together. A bond forged in fire.

I fucking love those little details.

It shows how much thought goes into this production. How much care as each opening reflects where this couple is at the moment. Done to the smallest detail.

Love it.

As for the rest of the episode, my favorite things is the role reversal between Luiza and Valentina.

Clearly, in the Christmas episodes, Luiza is protective of her wife. She fiercely comes to her defense in the opening episode.

But she doesn’t push too far.

Even though she knows her mother is bad for her wife, she doesn’t stop their relationship, or insist her wife get help.

Here things have changed.

Luiza has changed.

She lost her memory, slowly gaining bits and pieces of it back here and there, not to mention attending therapy of her own. She’s in a much healthier mental headspace.

Bringing a new perspective to her relationship with Valentina.

Despite her wife’s bad mood, she reminds her that she’s there. She insists on therapy and it happy when it helps. But shows her support by being there to pick her up when it’s done, just like Valentina did for her.

The roles switch to where Luiza takes charge and is clearly protective of Valentina.

More so than she was in the Christmas special. She steps in here and decides what’s best for her wife. Realizing that Valentina is in rough shape and needs someone to steady her like Valentina did for her in season one. When Luiza worried for nothing beyond therapy and coping with her new situation.

Something that works well.

As Valentina snaps out of her funk.

It’s not perfect and she’s easily triggered like just seeing her mom at the end there is going to do damage.

But Luiza’s switch for dominance over everyone around her wife is evident as she tries to control things to make it easier for Valentina. She’s driving in this episode.

While when she’s with Valentina, she’s still very soft, and sweet with her, but her spine is clearly tougher now than before. She’s carrying the weight of the family so Valentina doesn’t have to.

Making Valentina even sillier than before.

Like in the kitchen with her son. The surprise for Luiza. The comment about sanity.

All of it, because Luiza has made a safe space for Valentina to let go. To let her take the reins for a while.

I love this dynamic shift.

I for one, think that Luiza’s memory loss actually helped both of them get to a better place with their mental issues after everything they have gone through.

And once again, I must commend the actresses. The moment at the end when they’ve clearly had sex felt so real and filled with tension.

Like they just couldn’t wait to get home and finish what they started.

So good.

At least, until they bumped into the bucket of cold water. Sheesh. Way to kill the mood, lady.

Thanks for reading! What are your thoughts on the opening episode? Also, do we think Marcos will file for divorce? Their conversation about the treehouse was cute!

Spread the love and read on!
