Don’t give into peer pressure! Unless the peer pressure is to watch Xena, in which case, what are you waiting for? A terrible remake? No, go watch it, in all it’s 90’s glory.
Because this show is glorious!
This episode titled The Greater Good features Xena’s death.
Well, sort of.
And the return of Salmoneus! Remember him?
I do. From the episode of the Black Wolf when he was all shocked to discover Xena had a friend.
This episode was something. A joyous something all because of one little thing… Gabrielle beat up a tree.
Yep, that right there is enough to keep me grinning for days on end.
Of course, I know there’s the little kiss on the corner of the lips. Which is good as well.
Because if I was Gabrielle, I’d be examining that to death. (Poor choice of words?) Why did I choose to kiss her there? There are two cheeks, a forehead, and the top of her head right there!
It’s not like she was lacking in available locations to plant a smooch.
Also, who kisses a dead body?
In my experience, lovers. That’s the sort of thing you see people in a romantic entanglement do, when one dies untimely.
Of course, it’s not the only thing we see them do.
After all, how many things can you name offhand of people freaking the hell out when their loved one dies or supposedly dies?
Superman: The Movie. Turns back the planet to avoid her death.
We literally have Darth Vader because he lost his wife.
Spider-Man screaming in disbelief when Gwen Stacy died.
It’s the sort of thing that happens in romantic partners. Just saying.
And here we’re treated to Gabrielle beating the hell out of a tree after she thinks that Xena is lost. Not only that, she then completely loses her mind and decides to take on a warlord and his army to bring Xena to the resting place she wants.
See Burn Notice. Michael freaking out when he thinks he’s going to lose Fiona.
See most love interests ever – honestly.
It’s a tried and true way to show much people love each other, pushing them to brink of crazy things.
Tell me Gabrielle was thinking straight.
Tell me she was capable of almost anything in that moment. She could have killed him. I don’t think she wanted to, especially the longer that standoff went on. But she thought about it, even for a moment. She was ready to tear everyone limb from limb to give Xena what she wanted.
Now, I love my friends. But I would never compromise my morals for them. There are certain lines, I won’t cross. Not for anyone.
To me, if there was someone I was willing to completely disregard safety, my personal code, and do whatever I had to, to honor her wishes. Well, I better also be married to that person or going to marry them.
Like damn.
I love this episode. I truly do.
Even the parts outside of the ongoing romance between Xena and Gabrielle.
Like the idiot warlord who thought it was a good idea to declare victory before he had it. “I killed Xena.” Dude, unless you’re certain she’s dead, don’t proclaim victory yet. It won’t end well.
In your case, it ends with a bunch of villagers pointing sharp objects in your direction.
Then foolishly wanting to use Xena’s horse to tear her limb from limb.
I was never so happy when Xena stood up and declared that guy better not touch her horse again. I was ready to jump through the TV and smack that guy with the whip. How do you like it buddy?
Then Xena gets the staff over Gabrielle only for Gabrielle to come over and yell at her in the middle of the fight.
Something Xena points out.
Ummmmm… Did they get married when I wasn’t looking?
That’s an interesting use of banter there, writers.
I mean, that’s a lot like how people who have been together for years talk to each other. Like honey, could we discuss my near-death experience after we kick everyone’s ass?
No, dear, we’re going to discuss it now, because while I was ready to risk life and limb for your dead ass, I’m now annoyed to find it wasn’t necessary. So, we’re going to discuss it now.
It’s just so good.
To top it off at the end there with let’s not get all mushy on each other.
Um, ladies, I think we’re past that when one of you takes on an army to fulfill the other’s last wish. Just a thought.
Oh, and you might not want to get mushy on each other, but I sure as hell am mushy on this relationship. I do not care what anyone else says. These ladies are crushing hard on each other.
Though, I for sure think that Gabrielle is oblivious to what it is. She probably has no clue that you could be romantically attracted to a woman and thinks this is what a best friend is.
No, honey. This is what having a love of your life looks like.
Jeez.
Meanwhile, Xena’s all blushing and trying to talk herself out of falling deeper. She’s a kid. She’s a toddler. She has no idea what she’s doing to me or anything about life.
Whew.
This episode was a lot.
And I want everyone commenting to know, I see your comments. I see that I’m going to lose my mind as I get further along. I accept my fate. As this is only season one. It’s bound to get worse, right?
Bring it on! I can’t wait!
Now, one last thing before I take off to watch and write up the next episode. Who the hell shot Xena?
Like I was not expecting that mystery to just… not be solved in this episode. Thus far these episodes have been fairly self-contained. Any issues brought up are resolved in the same episode.
Except here.
Like what is that? Why does it worry me so?
Like someone was able to shoot Xena?!
She didn’t catch it or flip away or even know who it was by the end. She’s totally clueless.
Which is unsettling. She’s never been without a plan or reason or something when some shit goes wrong.
If she’s not sure, well, I don’t like that at all.
Anyone else feel that way watching this show through first time? Unsettled?
Sigh.
I loved this episode. I can’t mention it enough. Even though Xena was willing to sacrifice herself for the ‘Greater Good’ and Gabrielle grieved.
It was hilarious to watch Gabrielle dress up like Xena. Like a little kid wearing their parents’ shoes. They just don’t fit quite right.
The little moment that paralleled the opening. Xena watching from the sidelines with a strange look on her face. Almost like she’s passing the torch, but knowing Gabrielle can’t handle. At least not right now.
So can she really die?
Argo telling the other horse not to move.
Argo and Gabrielle finally getting along.
Gabrielle taking charge and still trying to save everyone because it’s what Xena would have wanted. So good. I love it.
I love this show.
Onto the next episode now!
