Xena Warrior Princess – Mortal Beloved

Oh, come on!

Marcus died! He’s back? Why? Why, oh why?!

Foolish me thinking that death could stop love interests. I should know by now that this is a show where anything can and will happen. But sheesh. I was hoping when love interests died, that would be the end of it.

Congrats Marcus, you’ve surprised me. Now, get lost, and stay dead please. Thank you.

Although, I do think he was one of the better love interests we’ve had. He’s fleshed out differently than the others we’ve met, so that’s a nice change. He’s at least interesting to watch. Even if I want no part of him.

On the other hand, I cared little about what was happening in this episode outside of Xena and Gabrielle.

The minute I saw Marcus was back, I checked out a bit. Especially, with how in love Xena claimed to be.

Like really? He hasn’t been mentioned since. You’re mourning him? Where? When? You loved him? Outside of his first episode he wasn’t mentioned and I doubt he’ll ever be mentioned again either.

So I’ll admit, that left a sour taste in my mouth.

Like we also have the suggestion that Xena might be Hercules soulmate from their crossover, but she’s in love with Marcus this whole time? He’s the man you love? What?

That felt super shoe-horned in.

And more like Xena was acting out of guilt for getting him killed by suggesting he turn his life around, which he did, only to die minutes later. Like yeah, I can see why you’d want to help him.

But you love him? Please.

No.

Anyway, I loved Xena’s scream when she realized that the evil dude was going to kill Gabrielle.

Like that was not helpful to the situation, but Xena wasn’t reacting like a warrior. She was worried for her ‘friend.’

I haven’t really seen Xena shout in worry or concern. Sure, she’s got her yelling thing that everyone knows is a sign of attack, but full-on yelling letting the bad guy know this will hurt if she dies. Also giving away the fact that you’re there, not helpful.

Not in the slightest.

Xena isn’t typically one for reacting from a place of emotion.

She keeps it cool. Her fury under a tight leash.

She lost it there for a moment.

So, no I don’t care about her words for Marcus or the tears at the end. She didn’t scream like for him. She didn’t keep him close like she does Gabrielle. She can claim whatever she wants, but actions speak louder than words. Every time.

I loved how Gabrielle was in on the plan, tucking Xena in.

I even loved the terrible CGI for the Underworld and the furies or harpies who weren’t harmed during the making of this episode.

I could do without Marcus. Because there’s no point to him.

Instead, the only good thing we get is learning that the dead can hear your thoughts when you think of them. Bringing comfort to those who are lost and left behind.

That’s the only thing that really happens.

Because Marcus is dead.

He’s not sticking around.

Gabrielle is.

She’s the one holding Xena in her sadness. Waiting for her to return. Helping lure the bad guy in. She’s there day in and day out.

Personally, I don’t really care for this episode because having him back left a bad taste.

I do love Hades portrayal though. How useless the gods are without their symbols of power to give them power.

Xena’s plan to ensure Marcus got into the Elysian Fields was slick. I love this version of the Underworld better than Percy’s.

People who live well and die well, end up in the Elysian fields. But bad people, they end up in Tartarus plain and simple.

Even the return of the guy who died when we met Death. Loved that he wanted to know who killed Xena and somehow believed her when she said she was died. He was so gullible.

Overall, not my favorite, and I’m happy to be on to the next episode. Is it too much to ask that Xena and Gabrielle spend the entire episode together and there’s no love interest? Please?
