Did I hear that right?
Xena was engaged?!?!
Whoop, and we’re back to male love interests dying. So much for that guy. Glad I didn’t bother to learn his name. Whew.
Ambrosia was introduced.
Along with another friend…? Someone from Xena’s past who was dying before we got to know him. So sad.
Although, Xena didn’t seem too broken up over him.
We meet a guy she almost married.
An assassin.
Find a Sumerian treasure.
And I’m not entirely sure anyone slept during this episode.
No, seriously. I think the only one who might have gotten some shut-eye was Gabrielle the first night.
But the assassin didn’t sleep. He was too busy watching everyone else, including Xena because he couldn’t figure out what she wanted. If not the money.
Gabrielle is living in naive bliss, protected by Xena which cracks me up.
She could have snored the entire night away comfortably, knowing Xena would never let her die.
I’m honestly surprised the assassin lived as long as he did after nearly getting Gabrielle killed on the cliff. I thought for sure that guy was done.
And it will never get old watching Xena come to her rescue or get pissed at those putting her in harm’s warm.
Whether it be physical or emotional as she was not happy with her ex.
By the way dude, I don’t care how many times you say you think Xena is jealous you’re flirting with Gabrielle. I have news for you, she’s not jealous you’re interested in Gabrielle. She’s jealous that Gabrielle might be interested, because she’s interested in Gabrielle.
I don’t care what anyone says.
I think Xena has been around long enough to know an attraction to another woman isn’t out of the question.
But to her, Gabrielle is a naive kid in need of protecting. Not someone she could actually be with romantically. Not right now. They’re too far apart emotional and maturity age range.
She just wants Gabrielle for herself.
And for the first time Gabrielle doesn’t listen unquestioningly to her friend. She decides to make up her own mind. And discovers the ex has grown up.
Xena isn’t wrong, he was an idiot.
But he grew up and I believe genuinely interested in Gabrielle.
Alas, as I’ve already seen, unless you have your own show there’s a high change you’ll die if you show interest in these two. Thus, he’s dead.
Out of the love interests we’ve had, he wasn’t the worst. I found his warring nature interesting.
Especially at the end, when confronted with doing the right thing with nothing to gain but death or choosing himself. I love that he chose to do the right thing, proving underneath everything, we can see what Xena and Gabrielle were attracted too.
Moving on!
Ambrosia was introduced.
Which I first heard of from Percy. So I was so expecting it to be something that could turn mortals into gods. In the Percy novels, it’ll turn a mortal to ash and burn up a demigod if they eat too much.
This was new.
It also looks like jello. Which was a choice.
Who walked into the prop room and was like I need something that could be ambrosia, food of the gods. What do you got?
The prop guy was like, Jello.
Good enough.
Love that.
I’m equally fascinated by the idea that Xena has no interest in being a god. Just like Percy.
For the second time in his novels by Rick Riordan, he opts not to be immortal. He even discusses it with the god of old age (I think) how unusual it is. Everyone wants to be immortal, be a god.
But I think both Xena and Percy have something in common despite being wildly different, they both know it won’t fix or change anything.
Like you’ll still have problems and issues. Just forever now. Good luck with that.
They enjoy that life is not forever and I think there’s something profound in characters valuing the time they have and not hoping, wishing, searching for more.
Overall, I liked this episode and was super glad after the last one. I don’t like clip episodes.
My favorite thing was Xena here.
How she’s changed with Gabrielle. In the dream episode which I think was three, she was worried about reaching Gabrielle in time, being there for her. But this time hits different.
This time, it felt like there was more on the line for Xena.
More desperation to protect her friend.
And no interest in explaining why.
Even the assassin wonders what’s Xena’s interest in Gabrielle. What does she hold for the former warlord?
And he never understands because he doesn’t think about anyone but himself or beyond his own greed. That Xena cares for her friend and that’s worth more to her than anything.
I’m so enjoying this slow burn.
How about you guys?
