Season two of Stupid Wife opens up with a quick recap of events.
It reminds that Luiza was once pregnant, is no longer, and remembered losing the baby only to race off and get into a car accident.
Season one ended on such a nice note, huh?
Combined with what we learn in Stupid Wife’s Christmas special, we can understand why Luiza flipped out at the end of season one.
Unfortunately, it means that the relationship between Luiza and Valentina that was getting better, is now on the rocks again.
We even end this episode with Luiza in the kitchen, asking Valentina about the child she believes she murdered. Yikes.
Overall, this episode is masterful.
The attention to detail by each actress is amazing.
They’re both so careful in their choices and how they play moments.
You can feel Valentina wanting to comfort her wife, but having no idea how.
Meanwhile, Luiza wants her wife, but doesn’t know how to ask for comfort.
The entire thing is painful and hard to watch. I watched it back again to refresh my memory and it hurt. So much hurt.
This is one of those things where there’s no one to be mad at.
Luiza got into a car accident and lost their baby. She didn’t mean to harm the child, regardless of how she felt. But guilt isn’t logical.
In her mind, she didn’t want the baby because she didn’t want to be pregnant, and she got what she wanted.
Except, this time she enters a different depression.
One so strong, her mind blocks out ten years to help her cope and come to terms with what happened.
I also loved how Luiza was open and honest with her therapist.
But when she got home, she wasn’t.
I think part of her not only blames herself, but wonders if Valentina blames her too. Is that why she didn’t tell her? Is that why she’s keeping her distance now?
On the flip side, Valentina thinks Luiza’s gut reaction of being lied to, means she’s upset with her. So she keeps her distance, waits for Luiza to come to her.
Except neither of them know how to go to the other right now.
It’s perfect.
The longing between the two. Combined with all the guilt, fear, and loss occurring makes for a melting pot of emotion. Everything is thick with feeling.
Just being in the same room, stirs it up.
While also not being in the same room, hurts.
It’s a couple who love each other deeply, are hurt, and grieving. It sucks.
And it’s well done.
Because it doesn’t offer answers. These are simply two people, in love, dealing with horrible things. There are no right answers or good answers.
There’s getting through the day.
Working through the emotions and trying to be there for each other.
I love it. It’s messy and terrible and everything I want in a queer centric married couple.
On a brighter note, I love Leo just dancing his way to the kitchen or telling his mother she’s disturbing him. It’s cute and wonderful in it’s own way.
He reminds each of them, that they can’t get lost in their emotions.
There’s a little person relying on them for everything.
He needs love and care.
I also loved that he told his mother if she didn’t ear dinner, there wouldn’t be dessert. And I loved Valentina agreeing that he was right.
It was a sweet moment.
And it pulled Valentina out of her funk for just a moment.
Though, I will admit, the flashback had me confused.
Were they in college? Why were they fighting then? What was the point of that flashback? To prove they’ll always choose each other?
Season one taught us that.
It was weird and felt a bit shoehorned in.
Aside from that, it was a wonderfully heartbreaking episode, and if you haven’t seen Stupid Wife, get to it!
